Light proximity to seedlings

I am working with all 42w CFL's and I am trying to figure out how far away I should have the lights from the seedlings up until the get to veging. Currently I am keeping all 5 of my seedlings about 9-10 inches away but they aren't growing very fast. Any thoughts?

cfls wont burn unless in direct contact with anything. i personally keep mine at about 6 inches, and thats only because ive got more plants than seed/clone lights

Get a thermometer.

As long as your temps are fine, you can have CFL's as close as you want. I keep mine one inch away, and move them up every time the light comes on.

Fluorescent light weakens over distances faster then MH/HPS lights do. You'll want to keep them as close as you feel comfortable.

I always keep my CFLs 2-3 inches and it seems to work great. I have 8 42w lights and usually do about 1 light per seedling.

Yea, 2-3 inches, keeps me from being overly paranoid about the plants growing into the bulbs, which has happened numerous times....

I use 3 fingers, which is a little over 2 inches with my hand.
