When Air cooling lights, should you push or pull your airflow?We recommend to push the air through your air cooled lights to avoid overheating your fan and to create a positive air pressure in your ducting and light hoods.Approximately 150 - 200 CFM is required to air cool a 1000W Bulb.

Considering you are alone in the argument Alexander, I'd actually take PC up on his idea about posting it as a newb question. Just make sure to only ask advice from people who have set up professional grows. See what people say. No point in continuing a losing argument, because 2 or more against one is pretty much you losing, even if you're right. So post it and see what people say, if they side with you, I'll be open to new ideas....even though I've tried virtually every setup (including the way you are suggesting) and I know what works and doesn't. PC designs grow rooms on this site for people every day. I build and set up indoor grows for sick or disabled people in real life.

Or you could actually set up a grow room yourself, try it both ways, and then see we're right for yourself....

This is the statement I got at from an rep at a hvac convention. There are many ways of looking at this whole issue, positive, negitive pressures, flow efficincy, flow volumes and so on. I have read the whole thread and let me say it seems like people are talking about 2 different things. I push and pull with mine, efficiency, heat I don' care, what I care about is MAX air flow.

With enough fans IN-line "Max flow" or load volume can be achieved. It depends on the length or run and size of ducting but if positioned correctly pushing or pulling does work equally well.

Personally, I think we should all medicate and chill. It sure would be nice if the mods could delete all of the BS in this thread. Light distance, while covered in many threads is always an important issue for us to cover.

I personally have tried a few things. My original setup was 1000 watt hps in a fresca sol water cooled fixture. I stuffed it into a homemade wooden box that was 4 x 5 but only 48" tall, quickly raised to 60". Light could be 10 inches from the plants directly below it. Much to my surprize the plants that were 24-30" away developed nicer buds. Switched to 600's due to height restrictions, still found best results not in the brightest spot, but the ones 18-24" away.

Look at all the pro setups. 1ks are 30-36" above the tops and 600's are 24" above. If your like me and you have to prove everyone wrong, go ahead and supercool your light and drop it down to 12" burn a few crops before you figure it out.

I now run open hood 1ks and 600s that are 24-36" and 18-24" above the tops.

Not saying it can't be done or that others are wrong, Just my hands on experience with light distance and bud quality!

Future:

The main reason for a larger operation to have that much height from plant to light is for convenience. With grows that size moving your lights is impractical. What you need to look at is watts per sq/ft. the farther you are away from the light the less intensity you will have. wattage and intensity are what you are looking for so running your lights as close as possible makes sense for someone on a smaller scale. The popcorn bud commercial growers is almost half of their weight, unless they rape their legs and only go for tops, then they reduce quantity.

If your hood has a glass lense and vented, you should run them at 6-8" from the light, this will give you intensity through 3 feet of the plant. You don't want popcorn bud, do you? Just keep an eye on them and if they start to look stressed raise the light for a couple of days, budley right, the light can be heigher if need be, but unless you have a reason too, why?

Yep, been there. It looks like it would be OK. You might even think you are increasing the yield at first. But, in the end, the resin balls don't form as plentifully. Remember we are trying to produce a late summer, fall, where the light period is equal and getting less. The intensity is also declining.

Hi I'm an old fart that has been growing for many years. At the moment I am running 12 / 1000 watt bulbs in hooded reflectors. I take the air from outside and push it through the hoods and exit it outside. There is no carbon filter in the system and no smell because none of the air in the room is in the hoods. Any air leakage goes into the room. If I was to pull the air through the room any leakage would be into the hoods and out side , smell and all. To exchange the air in the room I have a 10"exhaust fan with a carbon filter.
