Let's talk serious SCROG

OK, I'm impatient.

Last night I flipped the Violator kush room to 12/12, I could have let them go another week but I will be honest, The U shaped scrog is not producing the way I had hoped. Several things happened during the grow plus a bit of bad planning is going to leave me short for my patient. I have clones in bubble buckets that should be able to go into the screen as soon as I harvest the Vks, this will keep the grow cycle tight but I think I will be able to manage.

Here's what I did wrong;

Didn't leave much space in the "U room" for ventilation, temps have been floating from 78-80 through the whole grow.

Apical dominance took over and half my screen is popcorn nugs, very disappointing but had I thought about how the plant grows as opposed to my space I would have changed it up a bit.

PPM meter breaking down halfway through grow and not being immediately replaced lead to some nute burn, slowing the grow to a crawl for a good week.

all in all, the U shaped scrog was not as successful as I had hoped, The strain is also a 12 week flower so I have another 30 days or so to see how she ends, very little new growth but trichs are clear as glass. My patient needs higher cbd so I will wait for a good number of them to go amber but with insignificant growth I'm kinda just waiting for ripening with no additional benefit.

Here's a couple pics of the Vks, Like I said, another week would have been nice but depending on what the afghan skunk brings I will need to keep my patient stocked up without interruption.

Don't fret. That will fill in nicely during the stretch.
12 weeks strain? What the hell? You got free power or something. Just kind of funny. Got a freebie seed recently. I grew it out till I learned it was a 10 week strain, think I'll just give it to someone :(

This is exactly why i have that reflector overhang in my closet. Just throw them in soil and let them go for some variety.

Prof.. if your just waiting round for 30 days throw up some mh or blues spectrum light. Should help raise your tric production. And you already have the time.
Im also not to fond of the u shape net so far.

I would love to pump some more wattage into the closet but the ventilation restrictions are a beast, I rent so cutting holes is a bit of a hassle. At this point the closet has its door open during the day and a tarp over it at night with an intake and outtake supplied by a small fan, humidity often gets upwards of 70-80% at night so I have to blast it every morning. My alarm is set 7 days a week to wake me up at 6 am and open the tarp, can't wait to not do that any more.

This closet was my last low budget grow, it will be turned into a veg closet running flouros after this harvest. I have no real plans of trying to "buff" my grow at this point, energy is going into the 4x4 tent where the real magic will happen. I may do a little mucking around in the closet but I learned a few lessons from this unconventional grow and will not be repeating it.

I had seen a few U shaped scrogs work with success but now that I have revisited the pics and vids I see they all have the same problem I am having, the edges of the U shape are growing big fat buds compared to the center and are at the same time getting the least lumens, in hind-site I'm really amazed I didn't do the math, what I ended up with was the same or less than I would have with a flat uniform canopy. Luv2grow, you may have a better time because of your floating light, giving all the branches good cover over the day may make up for the dominance of the taller edge branches but you shall see when its all over. I will go ahead and apologize to anyone who tried a near vertical U shape based on things discussed on this forum.

nah don't apologize... Everyone's space is different. The u shape would have been nice in my cabinet. I also built it with a single light setup in mind. But i am buff- in up the room for now. It'll be fun to watch them over time. And thats what its about.

Get the biggest tent you can afford. Also, you NEED to buy a dehumidifier! Search on CL, you can find great deals. If you have high humidity and dense buds, your chance of bud rot soars. Having the buds you slaved over rot is a horrible horrible experience.

To mr. Easy bake, lol, your welcome dude. That is the purpose of the forum. Kudos for taking some advice, many times newbs read advice then decide that "no that's not correct"...often to their peril. But, as I stated, a small HID setup..an air cooled one, will be easier to manage, be much simpler to set up, and most importantly, give better results with the correct bulbs. If I may make a suggestion, buy the cheapest off the shelf MH bulb (my $15 plant max bulbs give the same results as my $75 digilux MH) and use the money you save on a high quality HPS. Ushio, hortilux, or my current favorite, digilux
Iv'e learn that you catch more bee's with honey rather than vinegar.I hope to be up and growing in 10 day's or sooner. My fans arrived today and i have all the wood to build my cab once the light arrive i will start the build. My Light Setup was a kit so the bulbs are included i will let y'all know what they are and if i need to upgrade them.I'm looking forwards to sharing my First grow.Mr. Easy Bake peace out

Quick update.

5 days into flowering my 2 Violator Kush's and things are looking great. Filled out nicely, to give an idea of size all the branches are now 6-7 inches above the screen.

Ok, Prof (Legally too) I have to ask. And please don't take this the wrong way, just think of me as another grower seeking input.
I have a limited space as well as a limited time frame in which to grow my herb and I see we have different styles when approaching SCROG.
I've done it this way for "several" years now & would appreciate your opinions.
Can you tell me the advantages of running one plant in the screen versus several? It just seems that you have a considerable amount of grow room not utilized.
Here's a shot of my setup - and I'm still at least a week from flip. I know it looks like a mess - some of the fan's get all twisted around while I'm training, but they work themselves out.
Organic soil / 2 @ 600 M/H (18/6 currently)/ plenty of ventilation & fans /
Yield with this setup has been outstanding considering the size of the space.

Suggestions? Tweaks?
Thanks. GWN

yo GWN. The number of plants really, especially in soil, really just boils down to veg time. One plant will take several weeks longer to fill the same size screen as 4-5 plants would.

Your grow looks good for sure. The only thing I would do differently would be to trim out all that underbrush. I used to think..the more buds the better but now if they are not touching or through the screen, they get clipped. I'm going to post some pics of my 2 screen tonight. I'm on week 2.

cheers.

I agree with legally, your setup looks great, all that undergrowth needs to go. The sooner you trim out that stuff the faster your tops will veg and fill the screen out.

As for why I'm only growing 2 plants in my big ol' screens; I'm a medical grower in Vt, our laws only allow 2 "adult" plants per patient and 1 caregiver per patient. My patient uses marijuana for pain management and needs way more than 2 plants can offer. I veg 2 plants while flowering 2 plants so that (ideally) I can harvest every 2 months and keep my patient well supplied while staying inside legal limits. Other people that use scrog do it for different reasons, some have space restrictions etc. but for me its all about staying within state parameters.

trim out all that underbrush.
Yeah, I'm in the process of doing that, I clipped 1/2 a 5 gallon bucket a couple of days ago & left the questionable (maybe it'll make it to the screen) growth. I didn't want to piss them off by clipping too much at once.

I had neglected to consider state limitations when I formed the question.
I'm allowed 24 here so I just ASSumed.
Anyhoo, am looking forward to seeing buds very soon (my favorite part).
Cheers

MONSTER fucking stalk..that is a bottle oh PH calibration solution behind the stalk:

not all instruments are created equal... I'm going to guess its about 82 in there and humidity around 55-60

That stalk is a beast!

Are you running hydro for that grow or a hybrid system (I seem to remember seeing them in soil buckets)

What are your C02 lvls?

Do you notice better growth around 80f as opposed to mid 70s?

do you cut nitrogen back after week 2 or keep giving them a good amount?

They are in DWC. They outgrew their 4 gallon buckets a week before the flip So now they are in 9 gallon bins.

Co2 oscilates between 1400 and 1650. (meaning the controller is set at 1500 and I'm using a burner)

More growth at 80 degrees but only because I am running co2 and have enough lighting. HOWEVER, I will knock down temps about week 5 to make sure they bulk up.

My nitrogen gets cut in half at week one. (meaning half bloom and half veg nutes). By week two its all flower nutes but keep in mind I do get nitrogen in the bloom nutes and from cal mag but in general its much lower.

I am also using ginormous as a bud booster. And as you can see, it pretty much works as we are at roughly the same stage and I ahve pretty good flower formation.

yes, I think I can call that stalk a trunk at this point :)

it is a trunk. looks like a oak tree. I'll have the start of week three posted tomorrow. I need co2!!!! Its cool to have 4 grows within a few weeks for results. Im running 76@ 62 rh. only complaint is the pvc frame.
