The estimates below is my own estimations based on article mentioned below and actual research on the matter.

Article: UV-B RADIATION EFFECTS ON PHOTOSYNTHESIS, GROWTH AND CANNABINOID PRODUCTION OF TWO Cannabis Sativa CHEMOTYPES.
By: JOHN LYDON, ALAN H. TERAMULA and C. BENJAMIN COFFMAN.
Department of Botany, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742, USA.

My estimated conclution: "Add 2 x 23w UVB lights / m2 to your grow room and increase THC levels up to 30% in buds."

Read this science article regarding UVB lights effect on drug type cannabis originated from high heigted tropical areas with highly elevated UVB levels. In experiments with plants they have shown an increase of THC concentration levels in leaves from in a range from 22% - 48% depending on UVB intensity. In flower trichomes they got an increase between 15% - 32%. Thats staggering news! Now, this is laboratory conditions with UVB lights flitered to emitt in 300 nm wavelenght UVB light. It's widely known that THC UVB absorption properties range between 280 - 315 nm, so that is important. There's no longer any doubt in my mind that UVB boosts the THC potency of drug type cannabis, and that dont having UVB light is not realising the full potential of our dear plants! Time for a change imho!

What id like to do is to get an estimate on how indoor growers could reproduce this results at home. To get an estimate on what lights, how much lights, and so on, wich could be beneficial. According to the scientists they used 240w UVB, but i dont know on how big of an area. The scientists says that 13,4 KJ / m2 is the level of UCB used in their trials, and that is as much as the UVB levels in 3000m altitude in mountains where strong marijuana is found to grow. According to the article marijuana grown in these UVB rich areas has a 33% increased THC content compared to the same marijuana grown at sea level.

Looking at wikipedia, i found that 1w = 3600 J (3,6KJ), but that seems a bit high compared to the ammount used by scientists, so I devided it to 0,36 KJ instead thinking i made some error somewhere. If i divide 240w (amount UVB scientist used) in 5m2, i get roughly 72w/m2, wich is around 14KJ according to my estimates, and that fits exactly and seems to be a fair estimate, so i think im on the right track here! Then, a 13w UVB light would give 4,5 KJ. Thats what i use, and that seems a bit lesser than needed. 2 x 23w UVB / m2 in the right spectrum should to the trick to produce massively strong cannabis with approximately up to 30% increased THC production in buds! I noticed the UVB bulb I use has the perfect spectrum for cannabis, repti glo 10.0. They come in 13w and 23w strength, and is avalible in sorted zoo shops.

Repti glo 10.0 UV spectrum chart:

It need to be stressed that UVB light is harmful to humans and plants that dont have developed defences to it (like cannabis has). When having such a bulb in the grow room, it need to be switched of when entering to room. Cancer is a known effect of UVB light exposure.

hello all, I am new to this site, and just came across this thread by chance, (more so b/c I seen then form tittle, and I myself use L.e.d with my project.) I have read a few of the previous post on this from, and can only add from my personally experience on this topic. I did my own due diligence on this, as well, came across a lot of JUNK out there, but there are some reputable products as well as sellers out there. First off I am not a Salesman for any person or Persons on God's green earth, but for the truth as I see it. Now, I am currently on my project, I have to be completely stealthy, so I acquired an Pc Grow tower off of e-bay, I had then finally settled on what I believed to be "THE BEST FOR MY PURPOSE" which was the 15w(that's right, I typed 15 watts) Full spectrum "Grow Spot" from www.Sunshine-Systems.com, and then I statred with Nirvana's Ak48 (Feminized of course), Not any High Priced, top dollar strain. and within two weeks from germination I had crystal's on her:hump:, after that she went into Beast mode devouring every Nutes, and Supp. I have to throw at her. I am currently in the Fourth week of flowering, and she is completely at the top of the P.C tower and that's with manicuring and Bending her! May have to unwillingly top her, in the next couple of days:cry:, I have a Digi, and have been documenting her progression very extensively, here are some proofs to her Passions for all interested, Shots 1.) and 2.) are at 9th day from germ., Shot 3.) @ 20th day, shot 4.) 29th day, and the rest are of Day 37
So L.E.Ds are not :cuss: and do work, and very well, with very little use of resources, I will try and update next posting with more recent Pic. One Luv 2 all

things i've learned after research...

spend money on a light with 660nm reds, not the 630's. it is slightly more $ but better quality light.

you can use the blue LED lights during the dark cycle and not affect flowering

do not buy a light with IR LED - it is simply heat, waste of wattage

UV, violet or white, LED are marginally beneficial.

LED is more efficient for VEG than MH.

LED nuggets have been reported as being more dense than HPS, but with a lower yield. However every day that passes we learn more about the ideal balance of LED.

Perhaps its best to have 90% blue/10% 630nm and UV for veg

and 90% 660nm/10% uv and blue for flowering would compare to HPS flowering
You say buy 660nm over 630nm...Why? Everything I've read suggests 660nm for flower and 630 for Veg. What if a person wants to use LED for veg only, they might be very disappointed in a 660nm (red) unit. I came very close to buying a 660nm unit because of all the hype, but now i read that if i'm missing the 630nm spectrum...I could be disappointed.

From reading every post in this thread and probably 1000 posts from other threads, it's clear to me that most people don't understand the difference between 660nm and 630nm, they would rather compare the 2 as apposed to discussing how they work together. I'm no expert, just drawing a conclusion that one needs both wavelengths either at different times of the growth cycle or at the same time.

My thinking is to buy a unit that combines the spectrums or buy 2 single (one kid of red) spectrum units to combine the 2 yourself. I might buy 2 90W units with different red spectrums and place them side by side angling them in 2-3 degrees.

As I'm no expert (like most), I'd love to hear from some people who have a good handle on this science and put the red nm wavelength debate to rest...cheers

Well I just pulled the trigger on a used 300Watt UFO. I got a good deal on it but I sure hope I didn’t just screw up and waste my money. I'm good with electronics so in the future, if I decide that I want to change out the LED's for better ones I can.

The specs are 300 watt UFO tri-band led. red 630 nm (660 is better), blue 460nm, orange 612 (I know, orange is worthless) over 50,000 hour lifetime use, low-temp, high efficiency. So, this light will be better for vegging, whereas the 660nm is better for flowering, is that correct?

I plan to run the LED in combination with a couple of 4 foot 4 bulb T5’s in a 4’ by 5’ stealth closet. My thoughts are to run the 6500 HO bulbs for vegging and switch to the 3500 blooming bulbs for flowering in combination with the LED.

I am going to need so much help, I will apologize now for my dumbazz questions to come, lol

Thanks to all for their insight in this thread, S

I found a good source for 1watt LED lamps. Who knows, maybe at some point in the future (and after I learn a whole lot more about this subject) I'll pull the bulbs and replace them with more "wavelength specific" lamps. S

ok i am deff a newbie and have a grow goin at the moment wich is only my second grow and first useing LEDs... i have had many CATASTROPHIC failures from nutes to bugs and everything in between lol... i apologize in advance to everybody if i mite come off as arrogant at times but trust me thats no the case i just love to experiment and i will probably be doin some stupid things in the future with my babies just to see what happens so i know for myself not just what people tell me is the "right" thing to do, ive just always been the guy that likes to learn from my own mistakes too not just everybody elses... i will start a journal once i start up my very expensive seeds lol for now i just got some bag seeds going wich are currently 4 weeks into flowering and absolutely gorgeous (aside from a few chewed up leaves)! well i dont want to babble too much that was just my intro so to speak lol i save the rest for my journal cuz i babble ALOT! ok i have a question? why does everybody keep dissing the orange LEDs? anybody ever look at the plants light sensitivity scale... i do believe orange falls in the lower peak of the 2 at the right side of the scale... everybody boasts bout the IR leds but look where they fall on the sensitivity scale... a bit off dont u think? just my opinion lol! and evrybody talk about the penetration of the LEDs but there are a few people testing out the 3 watt leds and just to let everybody know they have already came out with 10 watt LEDs so hopefully they will put those bad boys in a grow lite and shut all these LED haters up! ill be around around so keep an eye out my journal will be sure to entertain once its up and running with my Onyx and Purple jems and a lil Ganesh! :)

One thing I have learned if the sales says they = a 1000w hps, it means they are around 600hps. I am on my 3rd grow with LED's there is a dead spot in the middle. They do not put a light channel in the middle does not make since to me but I fixed it. Went to Home Depot and bought 2 T5 fixtures and strapped them on.

negativity is not appreciated. to say something is shit speaks only of ignorance. leds may not be for everyone however, they do serve a purpose for many people and are quite successful. not everyone needs or wants a huge 1000 watt system. its very evident that all led manufactures claims fall short. if someone is looking for a very easy set up and isnt concerned with huge yields they are perfect. this grower doesnt have to deal with major heat problems either especialy in a small grow cab. i have seen many successful grows with leds. very dense buds with little stretching. i have also seen 1000 watts of leds produce 950 grams of yummie. i appreciate everyone that is using leds. i truly believe they are in there infancy and will one day out produce all hids. yes they are expensive now but they wont be forever. as our knowledge of the led grows so will peoples fears of using them. it wasnt that long ago that growers were using street lamps to grow there kind bud because there was nothing else out there to use. people using leds now are truly pioneers for the future of indoor gardening. your efforts are highly appreciated. yes i use hids as well as t5s and leds. each is serving a specific purpose to accomplish my growing needs. i use t5s and leds for my vedge room and hids for flowering. i would love to have all leds for flowering however, i dont have the funds at the moment to get the results i want for flowering. namaste

Yo istarteda grow with a 90w led quad band ufo ,it wasnt good, i sold it on ebay ,luckily, bought a 600w ,elec went up a lil,not that much, but the bud density is no comparison.

Yeah I thought the price on the one I have was going to drop but it has almost double in price. If they sell more of them you would think they would drop the price but no the mark it up higher. Does not make since to me. They keep telling me "welp we sold another light panel to another HUGE grower".
I am glad I got mine when I did.
We moved 3 more in the flower room today, so I have 2 Hash Passion; 1 Brainstorm and 1 Afganica also another HashPassion that I am seeing what sex it is.
Good luck to everyone growing hope everyone hits a pound per plant!!!!!!

I DID NOTICE HOWEVER THAYT THE LED VEGGED BETTER THAN MY FLUROS,it seemed to make them more bushy with more flowering points, compared to my fluoros the led clones grew busshier as well.
