Not sure, but aren't those the same boards running at half power? Could you just swap out the driver?

I was told the HLG65 would be able to flower in a micro grow situation (35x35x50), which it obviously can't do
It totally can.
So the problem with my experiences with QBs is that there aren't enough watts? Maybe I'll reconsider QBs after I can go back to larger tents.
I doubt it's a wattage issue, it's most likely a lack of grow height causing temp or light intensity problems.

Dial it in.

a chibi or 100 watt 2 fixture citizen would be good for it. With a dimmer so you can dial in the heat and light and expand your box as needed. OR an HLG 65 to 135. All are adjustable

I was told the HLG65 would be able to flower in a micro grow situation (35x35x50), which it obviously can't do. It's also not a decent veg light, even in that small space. At the moment I can only grow for my own consumption and the 60 grams I can fit in that space is enough.

I used to grow in a 3x4 tent and 31" x 20" cabinet, the tent had two 315 CMHs and the cabinet had two 90w Hans panels. I've done multiple micro grows in really small spaces, smallest being 8" x 8".

So the problem with my experiences with QBs is that there aren't enough watts? Maybe I'll reconsider QBs after I can go back to larger tents.

The HLG 65 should get you 60 to 90 grams dialed in right. the QB 135 will get you to 120 to 150 grams if you have the space to grow it.

The QB is very effective in a small space. Intense light with lower wattage is less heat to deal with. I was running a QB135 in a 20 x36 x 62 inch tent. I think it might be the perfect light for that tent but the Timber 2VL was pretty nice too. I just found it too hot for plants (intense) at full power so the 135 nailed it

HLG 65 and 100 not adjustable. What's a chibi?

That HLG 65 is underpowered. I have one in my 35x35x50cm tent and it's a slow veg light and I'm sure it'll be even worse at flowering. Unless I keep my plants REALLY close they'll stretch out and the growth is spindly. Previous rounds were with 5x 20w E27 LED spots and I had a lot better results. I honestly miss my old 70w Micro Hans Panel, it did a lot better job at growing weed than quantums. I have HLG40 veg lights for my cactuses and other succulents (8 of them in use) and they're really bad compared to T5.

OP, get E27 LED bulbs, they'll be cheaper than quantums and it's easy to cover the 40x40 area. Also, 120cm is plenty of height, don't worry about it.

I just don't get it, the quantums are supposed to be THE SHIT, but the results I'm getting with them are really crappy. Is it just that I'm used to a lot higher wattages? I used to run 2 x 315w CMHs. Am I expecting too much out of them?
That's really strange. The HLG 65 should be more than enough in a 35 x 35. The HLG is 147Lm/W and screw in LEDs are around 100Lm/W.

It -can- flower that space, but not incredibly, that's why it's marketed as a low cost, high efficiency early veg light. The hlg 100 at 4000k with a hanging height of 22-25cm is more like what I would have said to go with flower a 35×35 cm tent for that projected yeild with slightly increased quality and turn around time. But that's just my own mental math.

What height were you hanging the 65 at, I'm curious.
I don't believe it, who markets that as an early veg light?

Retail hydro stores locally in Ohio, where HLG is based. Hlg' website via their tent combo pack. Amazon answered questions.

I suppose I could be wrong, but I don't try to give advice to have people fail. I do try to help.

If you want to ever go the diy route (specifically driverless LED) send a message. I'm no expert when it comes to the light requirements that our ladies have, but I do have electrical knowledge if you want it. My current grow is using 4x 50w driverless blurple cobs and is doing quite well in a 3x3 cab grow. And my total cost for that light setup is under 100 bucks.

OP here. The light topic sure stirs up some emotion!

After reading everyone's posts and googling heaps, I've narrowed down to Optic 1 COB and HLG 65 QB. The AUS supplier says, "132 Top Bin Diodes, not the standard 120 Diodes as in USA Version" for the HLG. They are close enough in price to be a wash. So with 440x40x120cm / 16"x16"48" to work with, any preference. Full cycle grow.

you have narrowed it down to two great options and i think you will have success either way.

personally, i would chose the QB over the COB because it has a bit more power, and seemingly the light would have a more even spread over closer distance to the canopy.

good luck!

I'm leaning that way myself. 65W is about a 30% more wattage and the HLG is a bit cheaper. However, I know watts are not a perfect spec for LED lights and I don't fully understand the other specs used in the often confusing sales info. But a more even spread seems obvious from the form factor of a panel vs a COB and that seems a good thing.

watt is not a perfect measure because of efficiency. so as tech advances one light might produce more PAR light with the same amount of watts consumed.
but because you're comparing two lights that are current tech and both VERY efficient, in this case i think watts are a good way to measure. :)

Excellent, the fog of information is clearing! Now onto the horsepower topic! I have 40cm2 / 16in2 floor, is a 50W COB or 65W QB appropriate? Both have up-rated versions: Optic 1XL (100W) and HLG 100W. More light = greater yield or just overkill for extra purchase & electricity cost. I'm new to this and aware I can burn the plants with too much light. Don't want a light that is to powerful, because I just need to replace it!

More light = more photons = higher yeild generally. At a 35 watt jump you won't notice a jump that will kill your plants from overexposure ect. And you'll end up getting slightly better canopy penetration. (Go with the 100 imo and you'll be happy you spent the little extra if you do.) A few inches on the qb won't be a big deal. I can't comment too much on the optic line.

Also 35w in electric is like 7-12 cents extra a day and only like 120 btu max of heat.

chibi is from timber. vero29c at 1400ma. 100w single cob light.

fact is any recommendation in this thread would work fine.
chibi has a dial too. 100 watts of vero in a single fixture. Put in 2 and its the 2VL. I love it.

But I am of the opinion that if you can spread out your light source over more area for the same wattage you will have better results.

The QB is like a cob spread out over distance. And that QB 135 is money well spent. I got mine assembled for the extra 25 bucks and it is a beauty light. Best grow box light i have ever seen and i can go from about 40 watts to 150 with it by dialing the 2 screws.

I vegged in my 20 x 36 inch tent with it and it was up to the task. Awesome light . Sorry i had to add that I found it beauty eh.

Everything on RIU stirs up emotion! You haven't seen anything yet, LOL.

I'd lean toward the HLG 65 for a few reasons.

1) A board gives better distribution.
2) Higher output, 65W vs 54W.
3) Higher efficacy (efficiency), 2.3 μmol/joule vs 2.15 μmol/joule.

I asked about the AUS version in the LED section.
