For bought off the shelf lights, no.
You could get the cost of a diy strip build under $500 for sure. But it helps if you are building more than one light.

I'd save up for a quality LED light if you want to replace a 1000w HPS and really need to switch. My LED covers a 5x5 space but would be considered expensive compared to your current budget. As with a lot of things quality costs money.

I agree and i dont mind spending the money summers coming and the HPS is too hot they work great in the winter for me though what kind do you have that covers a 5by5?

I got two ecofarm boards (different model) for around 180 each, I can't claim to be the most senior grower but I'm at least okay at evaluating components. Mine are 210 diodes, the whites are lm301B, UVs LG, reds/UVs either epistar or OSRAM, I forget. In any case, I'm happy with mine and I looked around on their website. Two 240w boards would be 1004 white LEDs, 48 red 660 nm lights by CREE, 16 UV 395 nm lights by LG, and 16 IRs by CREE, which I think might be an alright replacement? It seems like bk78's suggestions put you more in the range of 1200+ diodes.

This model of theirs is more like an RSPEC, 200 reds, 920 whites, 16 IR & 16 UV. Whites LM301H

I have a buddy out in Vegas with a 4x4 tent in his garage. With the wide fluctuation in seasonal temps, he runs a 1000 HID during winter, and 500 watts of cobs during summer.
The light BK uses is your best bang for the buck. Timber makes a 540 watt bar unit for $100 more with no reds. Dan also has a more powerful unit for a couple hundred more.

I'm making the switch over to LEDs myself. Except I'm trying to avoid the Amazon and Chinese/Alibaba scene as much as possible or anything that BS'es about wattage and specs.
The only thing I've found (and I just made a purchase decision for) has been Grow Light Science. They are based in the US and have a five year warranty on their lights. They only have two models at present but check them out. Best deal I've found for what I'm looking for:

I got 3 -2000 watt sosen/Samsung paid 200 each they are doing good just getting into wk2 flowering, just ordered the 4000 watt for another grow($489.00)

Coming from a guy that is switching. A good general rule of thumb is any 480w fixture will replace a 1k se bulb with ease. EVERY SPOT around the 1ftx1ft center will be getting more light then the HPS.
Another good rule would be to dim them .....the dimmer the better until you and your girls are ready to increase the intensity. This is especially true when using the QB's. (they have a small footprint so they are very bright in the center.)
Im using DIY and a couple prebuilts just like the ones BK is using. They are 650 ish from thwe wall and will do a 5x5 easy. Literally beats hps in all categories except IR light. I finally got them turned up now but still over 2 ft from the canopy.
In veg , i switched from corn cob style leds to real strips and the difference is unreal. Single light bulbs are just not for our world anymore. I went from 580 watts in veg to about 240 and its almost too bright still. When its too bright the leaves will droop like overwatering. Dim your lights and they will pray again.
