Lazy mans Fog Cloner?

I've only ever cloned in soil, as I never got the hang of cloning in rockwool (I killed them all) RIP. So this time around I will be trying out a bubble cloner I built but I also plan to keep a few clones in soil/dome as well just in case my bubble cloning adventure doesn't pan out right I will still have some good clones in soil.


I was trying to think of a way to make the dome/soil cloning as care free as the bubble cloner is. I work long hours during the week and I was concerned with keeping my humidity up while I'm away.

So while digging through some of my stuff I came upon my old repti fogger. I'm thinking I could run the repti fogger on low on a timer in a 15 minute increment every few hours.

I will of course have to do some trial runs to see what the best settings are to achieve the right humidity before throwing some clones in there. But I wanted to see if there would be any down side to using a fogger or if anyone has tried it before?

Pretty neat... but I'm around 95% successful on cloning with rapid rooters and dome so I'm content. But nice set up.

That uses an ultrasonic fogger rather than heat right? If so it'll work great

Looking forward to the experiment so best wishes with that. I tried a couple of different times but never got positive results. I also use rapid rooters and soil and I get almost 100% results.

Just a cpl weeks ago i built a 3rd bubble cloner. in my haste i realized i didnt have the air stones i like to use. I tossed a in water fog unit in it for S&G, it actually workd really well. I had roots start shooting in 4 days. a personal record.

Me three! I keep it simple on the clones. But the fog looks damn cool...perhaps you could add lazers, too

SICK! Any chance on some info on the fogging? Or, method's?

How much do these units usually cost? Also, subbed, do it up!

I cant speak for the reptile fogger, tho it looks very kool. The unit i have came from a lighted fog bowl, a decorative piece my sister had (key word, had lol) you can find the fog units on the web.

I use a shoebox tote available from walmart (i think it was a whole 3.50). they are more durable than the same size ones available from homedepot. I usually use 2 10" airstones (the ones with the blue plastic base) from wallyworld also. they are a perfect fit.

I didnt use any nutes in the water as i wasnt sure if it would screw up the fog unit. I also had to raise the unit, as the water level was to high for it to produce a good amount of fog. so i foil taped it to a stainless steel dipping sauce cup. also from wally. also, i ran my fogger 24hrs, i sposse u could try putting it on a timer (maybe 30 min on, 30 min off), i just didnt have an extra one available.

I use foam pucks (made from flip flops) to hold the cuttings above the water level (but it doesnt matter if they dangle in the water) *side note on flip flops. i used purple, gray, and black. the purple ones had dye running, it stained my clones, and the gray pucks, thats why they have purple on them. I dont suggest using colors as they may have been the cause of problems.

oddly enough, mine does have color changing leds in it. I foil taped them over. under the assumption that light is bad for the rootzone.

I bought a fogger on clearance for $25 at home depot at end of summer. It's a pond fogger. Comes with a float to keep it at proper depth.

I ran 24/7 in a very small container, coffee can. Those suckers really heat up the water.

I've read that even without notes, minerals in the water will build up on the disks.

Repti fogger is around $40 on Amazon,

It lets off a cool mist (my reptiles love it) and there is no heat made by the machine itself. As long as you run distilled water in them they stay pretty clean


I don't think you can get any simpler than a self sufficient setup!

I found the exact same thing with the exact same fogger. I do however have a fogger made specifically for hydro, and it runs WAY cooler. I might have to test the voltage of the power supplies (pond VS hydro units) to see if they are different. If the pond one is having to regulate a higher voltage, maybe it translates it into excess heat. The pond unit did have a bank of LED's that I had to black out with RTV, but that should not make any real difference.
I was able to keep the little fogger going in my DWC for an entire run without causing temp problems, mainly to help supplement the RH in the tent.

On the subject of keeping clones humid in a dome, I tried this method with a 100% success rate and it is cheap/simple:

OP, good luck with your experiment, it looks cool and I would bet that it will work great.

So I did my experiment, Thought I would update everyone.


I put 7 clones in MG seedling starter (added 20% more perlite) in solo cups 5 Berry Bomb 2 Blueberry Gum

I sealed the dome, no open vents ect
I ran the the fogger on 50% for 15 minutes every 4 hours for the first 3 days then cut it down to 20% every 5 hours

I also put 3 clones in a mini bubble cloner (properly PH'd water, bio root, heated at 78F, light proof ect) 1 berry bomb 2 blueberry gum



at day 6 - all but one of the cuttings in the soil/dome/fogg had shown roots
as of today (day all of the fogger clones have roots

day 6 bubble cloner - no roots
day 8 bubble cloner all three are starting to show signs of roots (less than 1/4 inch showing)



Only weird thing I noted was that in the fogger dome 2 of the clones had roots growing on the stem ABOVE the soil, I had to add some more soil to cover them


Pretty impressed with the fogging method, Although the bubble cloner is a lot cleaner setup.


I chose soil over rockwool because the last time I cloned all of the rockwool clones failed and all the soil ones flourished. Part of me thinks I kept it too wet, Or maybe I just had bad clones in them. Chances are it was operator error.

I think I will give rockwool another shot next time around with the fogger dome
