evening update on the farm...
blue dream progress (2 weeks)
piled up a little more than two yards into a mound and plugged a 707 headband.
i might change my mind and put my best mr nice in its place. pretty excited about this mound! laid hardware cloth down to prevent critters from burrowing
edit: anyone have any thoughts on a a good cover crop for this mound? micro clover?

It'll be very cool to see how that mound plant grows, I've never seen anything done that way!! But it seems very basic and natural, I like it 
. The cover crop you're suggesting will prevent the mound from corroding, right? Things are looking great as always though KK, that blue dream is going to be massive... Can't wait to see the tree at the end

It'll be very cool to see how that mound plant grows, I've never seen anything done that way!! But it seems very basic and natural, I like it
apparently growing in mounds is an age old practice in the ag community. to be honest with you i wish i didnt have any smart pots at all, because even the largest containers get rootbound. but we have a terrible gopher problem here.
not having to dig holes is a huge bonus, plus mounds drain a lot better too. they just take a lot of water!
the cover crop is to help with erosion and act as a living mulch..

Fast action Nitrogen fixing power, beautiful little purple flowers and beneficial insect attractant. You could cut it back to keep it low, great bio-mass for your compost pile/mulch.

That Chickling Vetch is really cool stuff. I cant wait to see what you do with it.
I thought it would be perfect for your situation...or at least a better fit than clover.
It should grow much faster, fix more nitrogen, and will be easier to manage post season when your cleaning everything up.
The soil in that mound may be so good come October, you might be digging it up, and recycling it!

i plan to cover all my smart pots and walkways in all sections of the farm here after the last plants get harvested in the fall. do you think vetch is the way to go for everything? fwiw i have alfalfa and crimson clover seeds here.

Crimson clover is great too. I use it quite often as my 'short' season clover choice, as it reaches maturity in one or two seasons (depending on sowing time)
Red Clover or sometimes called Mammoth Red Clover is really nice in areas like lawns/flower beds or used in longer rotations (2+ seasons, as it reaches maximum benefit somewhere between the 2-3 year mark) Bees and Butterflies LOVE it, and it produces excellent tea material/bio mass.
Alfalfa is one of the longest living, deepest diving field scale legumes out there. Its best used as a permanent crop, or in long rotations.

120 gallons compost tea brewing... organic gem, kelp meal, azomite and molasses for food. microbial source consists of a combination of castings and a shovel full of native and peat from a shaded, and heavily mulched area in one of my flower beds.
weathers been pretty mild kinda cold @ night but ladies are progressing

400 gallon containers got plugged with 5 gallon starts last year on 6/1. thousand gallon containers didnt even get plugged til the second week of june..

another week in the books...
camera died after first pic, guess ill have to settle for just one this evening. more pics tomorrow am. plugged (2) 5 gallon romulans and 1 agent orange. also a 10 gal mr nice (g13 hashplant). all in 200 gallon bags. still two vacancies in the hoop house plus another mound to fill tomorrow.
im out of bagged soil so im going to make my first potting soil with some premier peat from the depot mixed with perlite and wiggle worm. using those two because i have them on hand here. i would add my own thermal compost but i havent harvested any of it yet. i need the potting soil to buffer my last three holes.
last three remaining spots are going to purple cindy, amnesia and infinite euphoria
