I grow it, mostly outdoors though. Most of that is from the best strain of Catnip that was ever grown, Mountain Lion. I don't think they are in business anymore, but I found an old tube of "Black Tie" with a few buds and separated the seeds. "Black Tie" was the whole bud, the top apical dominant bud.. tied with a black silk string. I used to get it for my cats at Christmas. In containers, and bags.. inside the shipping box, sealed and taped really well they smelled it through the packaging and went ape shit and openingit. It was super fragrant, very much like being knocked over opening a bag of prime cannabis. So thats the strain I am growing, its a strain worth keeping alive.

I have tried "Kitty Chronic" and it wasnt even close... barely better than the schwag at pet stores. Dont get me started on the shit they sell at Whole Foods... leaves and stems. Catnip should be whole bud, super fragrant, well cured and loaded with trichomes. Same qualities you look for in good weed... cept for the THC content not nearly as high.

i just started growing the nip, i'v heard it makes good mosquito repellent, and anything that will help with that is worth trying.
(plus my two cats love it, so as long as i keep them from killing it i should be fine.)

Its also supposed to help repel Mice.... but I think it has more to do with the Cat that's hanging around thier personal dope plant than the plant itself.

Also bugs of all types are not particularly fond of any kind of mint.

i dont grow it but we have a ton of it that grows wild here in the alleys through out town. mayby there is an underground kitty circle planting it and trading it on the blackmarket? lol, if you harvest it make sure to dry it and cure it properly.

This is the best pics I could get. This is whatever strain I have outdoors. Probably a cross between average garden center schwag, and Mtn Lion.

If you look closely, you can actually see the little trichomes. The nose knows. This is very fragrant stuff. :weed:

The Mtn. Lion strain I am starting from seed will be a while before there's much to see. I might even LST, bend and super-crop that ShiesBen.

I am not sure that Mountain Lion Catnip is still in business. You could do a Google search, and call or write them snail mail. IF they are still around, just buy some catnip and seperate the seeds. But like I said they may not be. Either they retired, died or otherwise arent doing it anymore. I have a very small amount of seed I separated from a tablespoon of Mtn Lion Black Tie, from about 5 years ago. I intend to keep that strain alive, but it will be a couple years of cropping just for seed, and testing to see if its really a better strain. According to the people at mtn lion, some of the other catnip places bought there stuff, and mixed it in to make commercial schwag a slightly higher quality.

Pet Stores sometimes have mid grade catnip. Buy the one that smells the best, and seperate the seeds. IF its good catnip bud, it has viable seed in the seed pods. IF they have the stuff in the plastic tube, whole bud, nice 3" coloa's.... that is the Mtn Lion KNOCKOFF... but I havent seen that for years.

There is one place in California selling catnip in green prescription bottles.. with names like "Kitty Skunk", Kitty Diesel, Kitty purple purp purping purplizing purplexinator, etc. Likely its novelty more than it is good kitty bud.... but if it smells good, it should be a good strain.
