whats up all?

I've waited long enough due to [insert bullshit excuse here], and now im breaking the gear back out!!

I've popped eight beans, 5 Killer Queen (reg) and 3 Apollo 11 (reg).
They are currently vegging under a cheap chinese blurple (advertised @ 1200w) until i can either find my or procure more ratcheting light hangers. My real light set-up (until I upgrade of course), are two 2x4 bridgelux eb builds, for a total of 12 (1120mm) 4000k strips powered by two meanwell HLG-320H-C1050A drivers, wired in series. I have an EYE Hortilux t5 PowerVEG bulb to add some UV to this setup.

Been a few weeks.

Fimmed em all about 10-15 days ago, attempted to at least.

Having some mag def problems with the Killer Queens, they really seem to need a lot. I've been using tap water as well as adding cal mag at the regular and sometimes even heavy dose. Picked up some epsom salts today, going to foliar feed some to the KQ's tonight if i can stay up late enough.

The Apollo's seem to be doing good so far. Not finicky at all.

They all smell beautiful already.

Had some ph problems about two weeks ago, what i would call minor but the KQ's seem to be sensitive. Was treating my soilless mix like soil. Oops. fucking bag said soil right on the front. after having the issues i took a closer look, its a peat mix.

Transplanted into proper soil a few days ago as well.

Whats up RIU?

Been working like a jerk lately.. figured i'd better stop slacking and get an update out here.

I've made a big life decision recently.. I'm going Organic.
...Not my food.. but my plants food.
I SUCK when it comes to soilless mediums and bottled nutes! Ill fuck it up! Everytime!!

Besides.. I always wanted to but found it too difficult to acquire all the different amendments in my area.
I was probably just too lazy.

But my plants haven't been happy with me lately.. i fucked something up along the lines of ph and nutrient balance early on and struggled to fix it.

I just went easy on the nutes, threw old my 5yr old GO grow bottle, upped the mag and they started to look a little better.

Then i gave a couple good feedings (800ppm), then topdressed with my base mix and watered with distilled water (about a week ago) and they are looking MUCH better. all new grow is green and happy. Lost a few fan leaves along the way, along with a couple weeks LOL but things seem to be back on track.

My best grow was a wannabe organic grow about 7 years ago.. Super Lemon Haze closet grow in 5gal buckets of decent bag soil and a little botanicare grow and bloom when needed.
Shit turned out bomb. even had temps in the 90's in that small closet lol.

I've decided to keep it simple from now on.

I'm using a base mix consisting of equal parts EWC, potting soil, and perlite.

To each c.f. of this mix I am adding,

0.5 cup crustacean/crab meal - (still need to source this!)
0.5 cup neem/karanja meal - (still looking for this as well)
0.5 cup alfalfa meal
0.5 cup kelp meal
0.5 cup dolomite lime
1.5 cup glacial rock dust
1 cup greensand

I realize this may be a light mix, but its my first time so i'm keeping it simple and figure i can topdress or add some teas when needed.

Everything except this first two amendments, which i still need to acquire, is mixed and cooking. I know ill still need to cook an additional 4 weeks minimum from when i add the final two ingredients but i didnt see any harm in getting her mixed up with what i had. Its a head start.

I'm also trying to get some gypsum, fish meal and fish bone meal too. Some of these things are a bit harder to get in canada during the frozen season. Unless you live in Toronto, then you can probably get anything.

I'm very open, and looking for suggestions on my soil mix too.

Obviously this is in preperation for my next grow, which will be Mr. Nice - Super Silver Haze. Although I am about to flip to flower so ive just finished transplanting into 5gals for flowering and figured id see how they like the base mix (with a bit of dolo and glacial rock dust) and a little botanicare bloom when needed down the road.

They've all been tied down as well, with the exception of one of the more squat ones.. I really wanted to do a screen of green, those heads in the SCROG thread are doing some crazy shit!! But ultimately i decided I need to get my shit dialed in before I get them all tangled up in a net.

Here's some pics,

Time for a joint.

Quick update

Flipped to flower on Monday. 12/03/2018

6/8 plants were female. One of each strain was male, which leaves me with two Apollo 11 and four Killer Queen.

I'm not sure six plants will be manageable in there but we'll see. I have a 5x5 I may need to break out.

I'll take some pics over the weekend. Things are looking pretty good right now, everything is green and happy.

About a week since flip, All recent growth is looking great. Plants seem happy and healthy.

After being transplanted into my base organic mix the week before flower, and being watered with distilled since then, things have really perked up. They went from 2gal to 5gal pots for flower, should be able to get them through a few more weeks like that. Once it starts to deplete I'll probably top dress a bit more, as well as apply a few basic tea's. If I don't have the means to brew some ACTs I'll use the Botanicare pbp bloom I have. Really for the remainder of this grow I'm playing it by ear.

I've done a couple Aloe foliar's over the last two weeks, plants definitely don't seem to mind it.

Had my local garden centre order me some gypsum, so my soil mix i have cooking for my next grow currently consists of..

Base Mix :
1/3 EWC
1/3 Potting Soil (Ritchie's Feed n Seed house brand)
1/3 Perlite

Amendments :
(per cubic ft)
0.5 cup alfalfa meal
0.5 cup kelp meal
0.5 cup dolomite lime
1.5 cup glacial rock dust
1 cup greensand
0.5 cup gypsum

...This leaves me with a near complete mix. I'm going to add a bit more too it, but im concerned with going to high on the N. I'm thinking of adding Crab meal, Neem meal, and Fish bone meal for a little diversity but I should probably cut something out. Suggestions?

A few pics, with a couple out of tent for colour reference.

Also, I realized in my first post I had said my eb strips were 4000k, they're actually 3000k. I guess I didn't proofread my initial post very well.

Next on my to-do, build a 5gal vortex brewer.

Time for a spliff
PEACE

Hey brother Opie thanks a lot man!

I've been following your solo cup comp and I'm definitely going to get in on the next one, looks like a good time. You're killing it too.

As for the gear, Ive never run any Grimm gear before and I'm anxious to see how it turns out.
Killer Queen was somewhat of a grail strain for me. I had some amazing, eye-rolling, heavy-hitting KQ grown by a buddy about ten years ago, Since then I've never been able to get it out of my head. I did purchase some KQ seeds by Mosca back around 2011, and intended to run it, after my SLH but never got around to it. I held onto the seeds for years before either losing them or giving them away, can't remember.

At the time research i had done had told me Mosca's version was the closest to the original bred by the BCGA. Since that doesnt seem to be available anymore I went with Brothers Grimm. Fingers crossed.

Thanks brother, it is a challenge to grow/flower a plant out in a cup like that, fun too. Be glad to have you grow along with us man. You've got a great looking run going now, keep up the good work.

Subbed, almost pulled the trigger on Apollo 11, so am very interested in watching your grow.

On that last mix recipe, it looks a little light on N to me. The stretch can be a real N hog. If you add in some blood meal, you'll kick the N up while adding iron. If you source that crab meal, that will help, plus it'll be a source of calcium.

Also, have you considered mixing in some slow release N after cooking when you are ready to use the soil (like feather meal)? This way, when your mix begins to run out of N from your alfalfa/, after 3-4 weeks the N from the feather meal will be kicking in around the time your slug of fast release N is depleting.

Hey Zero thanks for stopping in..

That last recipe isn't the completed mix, just what i had assembled so far. Ive just ordered Crab meal, Fishbone meal, and Neem cake which will all likely be added at 1/2 cup per ft.
That will be the completed mix, do you think that'd be decent?

It will be my first TLO grow, trying to do it right.

I wasnt equipped and tried to jump into it on my current grow after veg, and have found myself chasing N def. due to not having fuck-all for N in there. I just figured it'd be fine since it was final transplant a cpl days before flip.

Here's some sad pics.

IMG_0360.JPG IMG_0361.JPG

As said in my previous post, I've been haplessly chasing an N def.
Top-dressed some kelp, alfalfa, gypsum and rock dust at least two weeks ago. At that point the problem was only really becoming evident on the Apollo's. Now the Apollos are seriously deficient and the KQ's are following.

Hoping for the best now, that top dressing will kick in at some point. I dont want to add too much N and have it all kick in at once either.

Struggle is real.

Gave them a bit of bottled nutes (GH grow (5-0-4), Botanicare Cal Mag) a couple days ago.

Its in gods hands now LOL.

I hate dealing with nute defs early in flowering when growing in soil, making corrections is painfully slow, and if you misdiagnose and apply an incorrect treatment, the nute def gets worse, all while that end of flowering date is fast approaching. Top dressing to correct a bad nute def is not always that effective in getting it under control, and you might want to just up-pot from your 5 gals to say 7 gals at this point to help get that under control.

In any case, see this through to the end and it will help you to make soil and transplanting adjustments on your next grow. MJ is good at redirecting its nutes to support flowering and the next generation under adverse conditions, so that means that you're still likely to get some nice smoke even if the defs result in loss of all fans and yellow sugar leaves by the end.

I am now proactive in topdressing (with different mixes of soil amendments depending on the plant stage), and try to transplant to larger pots when I see slight defs in the lowers, and definitely shortly before flipping, to make sure she has enough food to take her through the stretch . I do a final up-pot sometime after the stretch to carry her through the end, but try to time that last one to about 6 weeks before my anticipated ending week.

Looking forward to the finale and the smoke report.

Plants are pretty beat up, will definitely not yeild much.
The buds are frosty though. They're also throwing super early orange hairs, too stressed out.

Oh well, next round will rock it.

Got all my amendments acquired, current recipe is:

(per cubic ft)
0.5 cup neem cake
0.5 cup fish bone meal
0.5 cup crab meal
0.5 cup alfalfa meal
0.5 cup kelp meal
0.5 cup dolomite lime
1.5 cup glacial rock dust
1 cup greensand
0.5 cup pelletized gypsum

Thanks man. Honestly I've been learning so much over the last couple months I'm just excited for the next round which will be proper organics.

My worm bin is going great now too, they seem to be really thriving and I think soon I will split the colony and start another bin.
There's never a shortage of baby worms so I know they're multiplying. It may have to wait until I harvest the castings though, I need those ASAP. Probably 6-8 weeks at least still.

My current mix which is cooking is lacking quality humus, it's concerning but I don't have many options at this point except to wait on my own

Getting close to harvest time.

I now know topdress takes 3+ weeks, too maybe a bit longer for me as i didnt have mulch at the time. Learned a lot this round.
I managed to keep the most of them going, Ive got 3 Killer Queen and 1 Apollo-11. Cut down one of the Apollos today because I was bored and it looked like shit. Well I cut everything worth cutting. I've got a few popcorn buds left there and sowed some white dutch clover as a cover.

I did use some bottled nutes on the apollos when they were looking very bad, so i figure ill just grow the cover crop for a while and when my worm bin is harvested ill just hit it with a tea and go from there. Not sure on the best approach, maybe its garbage. maybe it could go through the worm bin.

This is the one I chopped today. Wasnt progressing quick enough and looked the worst.

Anyways at least ill have a bit of smoke, and a lot more knowledge. definitely will revisit killer queen. lots of potential there. Ive just got a lot more i want to grow first. Got some MNS SSH im excited about. also some purple afghan bagseed im dying to pop. as well as an acapulco gold cross i have high hopes for.

Peace out.

All plants have mostly cloudy trichromes, I expect to harvest the little bit i have next weekend, maybe one or two i will leave up depending on progress and how they look. Two still dont have swollen calyxes.
Cut a medium size bud off each plant to dry for a tester later in the week.
