Killer cloner!

This is my little cloner. I use the wood to keep the sides from bowing, which makes it a little difficult to get the lid on and off. I wanted to use the small, 12-gallon HDX tote, but the squares on the lid are too small for 2" pucks. This one is eight gallons, and I usually keep about six gallons in it. Its light enough to carry back and forth, to the bathroom, to drain and fill.

Hey do you mind me asking where you purchased those collars?
Cheers

Not your pump as I have the same one in a 18 gal rubbermaid tub.

I like these threads as I find new ideas for future builds. Every time I need clones I seem to redesign my cloner. ( I have way to much cloner parts lol my Home Depot switched PCV fitting suppliers and all the fitting were 10c each)

I cut the foam collars in half so I can expose more root. I also put the foam in cut off net pots. Easier to check for roots.

I really believe your problem could be fixed with switching your nozzles to the 90°/180° sprayers. I found they work much better than the 360° unless they are in a centre row.
I checked my local hydro store and they wanted 99c each for them. I figured I needed 25 so I went on ebay and bout $15 worth of sprayers I have 4 different kinds and more than I can ever use lol.
These are the best ones imo the 90°/180° from this guy

Tips I found helpful for myself.
Water changes. I find it's easier it's easier to just swap in a clean bin. I just pick up lid, pump and air stones. place it on the new clean bin. Take the manifold and clean the nozzles put back together and fill. Empty and clean the old reservoir. It's ready for the next water change. I change my water ever 7-10 days.
I found my water temp was getting too high so I put my pump on an on/off timer 42 on /30 min off (Cheap Woods digital timer with only 20 settings). I also added a air pump and two 8" long air stones along the side walls.

So my advice to the OP @Hydrowannabe
Try some different sprayer nozzles, also as someone said maybe redesign your manifold. I might lower it too.
My next build is going to use your same size tub, I'm just waiting for some parts.

Why do you have air stones in your cloner?

Most hydro stores sell them. Also alot of hydro supply stores online.

If your in canada.
Bustan.ca

Amazon probably has them

Their just neoprene circles with two slices.

Why do you have air stones in your cloner?
The bubbler adds more oxygen to the water.
I have had good success 100% rooting since using this method.
I had the air pump already as I use it to make compost teas, so I'm using the same pump for my cloner :)
I'm also not worried about contamination from the air pump as I change the water, swap reservoirs ,clean the manifold and sprayers every 7 days.

It's like blowing bubbles under a sprinkler. Just seems excessive for the extra cleaning.

And it's hard so see how that even helps.

My sprayers are not running 100% of the time. :bigjoint:
I would clean it the same way even without the bubbler. I find if you keep your tools, work area sanitary and clean it eliminates a majority of problems.

Just for kicks, have you tried it without the bubbler to see if it makes a huge difference?

Sorry I don't plan on doing that, you are more than welcome to do the testing.
This is kind of feeling like an LED/HPS discussion and I'm having to explain why I use LEDs. bongsmilie
It works for me and I'll leave it at that.

Done the testing. I'm running mine without An air stone.

Figured I could save ya some pump noise and an extra step.

All good tho, if ya like the bubbles power to ya ;)

I do the same as i want fresh o2. Because my cloner is sealed up pretty tight .... if you close the lid too fast net cups fly out :)

I wish i didnt throw away the little AIR VENTURI
Part that comes with the water pump.

I believe i could do without added air if i used it :)

If this pump ever dies ill use the venturi from the next one and lose the stones

Fresh o2.

I'm going to look into finding some plastic mesh or something and glue it to the bottom of one of the holes. To let the hot stale air get out but also not let the spray out..

You bet!

You can get more sturdy totes that don't bow as much, and even mine wasn't all that much. With the lid on, it helps retain the tote's shape. But I used the wood because I wanted to be able to easily remove the lid, without shaking the hell out of the clones :)

Another option is to use a 5-gallon bucket. You can have multiple holes in the lid, for many clones. I've seen them up to 18, but I cant imagine there'd be much space between them.

And yes, I've always had great success with these simple bubble cloners. But I also always had great success with aerocloners as well. One of the things I always mention, when comparing bubble cloners against aero, is that I like to use RootTech cloning gel on my cuttings. If using an aerocloner, the sprayers quickly wash off the gel. With the bubbles, the gel stays on way longer, and has much more time to work.
That’s what I heard from a lot of people,..that the aero cloners spray off the gel asap, but most say it doesn’t have much of an effect anyway. I think I’m going to buy these 15 gal durabuilt totes that I think I had once got from Walmart. They look just like hdx but the lid snaps much tighter, perfects size squares on top, and 15 gal is perfect size for a cloner imo.

I cut the little netpots in half too. Not sure how you'd get the roots out when transplanting :)

So, after reading everything you said above, I'll add the following...
"...or, you can just make a bubble cloner."
