Is this a bad idea?

18 gallon reservoir with 6, 5 gallon buckets that have an air stone in each. basically tells you to mix the nutrients in the reservoir. it has drip system controlled by a water pump that pumps 3 times a day for 15 mins.

was looking at building/purchasing one to grow six plants. good or bad idea?:blsmoke:

i was thinking about building my own.. seems a lot easier to do it that way.. (well cheaper at least) any advice regarding this build?

why would it be a bad idea, its a good idea if you want a drip system/dwc

Yes!

If you wanted to continue down the hydro farm route you would also need this.

You'll want to buy a control/epicenter bucket, you should also aerate your control/epicenter bucket so you'll need to have 7 airstones/diffusers.
You need rubber Uniseals or grommets for the return piping back to the control bucket.
You need pipe fittings like 90* elbows and flex tubing
You'll need a hole saw for what ever diameter net pot you'll be using as well as for the drain line holes.
You'll need a submersible water pump to push nutes to the grow sites.

you also might need a water chiller or need to run the Heisenberg tea.

West Coast Green: if you're using the larger size five gallon buckets instead of the smaller two gallon or three and a half gallon ones, why do you want the unnecessary complication of a reservoir? I could see it with the smaller buckets. I would think a simplified version with individual buckets, self contained and vigorously fed with large air stones supplied from a single pump of sufficient CFM's would be a lot easier to control. For one thing, if something goes wrong with one of your plants below ground level it's not as likely to affect the others.

I've been working with five gallon bubble buckets and ten gallon bubble tubs, (a knockoff of Stealth Hydro's unit), for about the last year now and I really like the buckets better. For a single well established plant I really don't think you can beat them for their simplicity. Admittedly, the 3 1/2 gallon size are a little easier to handle but that slightly smaller volume requires a little more care. I have a friend who had a set up similar to what you're planing; of aireated buckets connected to a reservoir and he still had his share of problems with controllers, leaks etc. And when he had a nutes problem in one bucket it spread like the flu to the others. My feelings exactly I use single buckets for just that reason if one bucket gets the slime or something it's only that bucket not all of them
