You want the tips to be cloudy (you will know). If they turn an amber color they are a bit too far. somewhere in between is ideal

Trichomes on sugar leaves mature faster than those on the calyxes.

I know a lot of people go by the crystals but I like to when the hairs are half and half. People tell me that is too early but I like the more uppy buzz.

I just look at the overall plant. I do not start looking until most of the pistils recede.
