The AR15's predecessor was the AR14. The AR14 was designed by Deftech Industries and was designated as an Assault Rifle.
Armalight, a newer gunmaker founded in 1954, bought a license to build and modify the AR14 and named it the AR15.
The difference between the two are very small indeed.
The AR stands for Assault Rifle and always has.
That old wives tale you spewed was made up by the NRA to defend the indefensible.
