http://johnallegro.org/main/His book The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross relates the development of language on our continent to the development of myths, religions and cultic practices in many cultures. Allegro believed he could prove through etymology that the roots of Christianity, as of many other religions, lay in fertility cults; and that cultic practices, such as ingesting hallucinogenic drugs to perceive the mind of god, persisted into Christian times.

Either way people have been having profound spiritual realizations throughout history . . . so who cares if they are mushrooms . . . The importance lies in the underlying message behind the teaching. It is impossible to discuss the absolute, emptiness, and God all this must be experienced. It is really unimportant how you reach enlightenment . . . simply throw off your mental barriers in a way that works for you. Become "no mind" because even the mind itself is a barrier. Throw off the self imposed chains of slavery!!!
