Home Depot picked up bigger CFL...

As I'm sure CFL producers are gearing towards bettering grow room efficiency, HD jumped on for folks... as I frequent regularly and check bulb sales, today I was interested to discover a 300W equivalent (68w usage) 2700k bulb for 14.95. 4200 lumens compared to the 2600 output via 42w 150w equivalents that many are using for flowering. But no shit... this thing is HUGE. For those with the 150w equivalent bulbs that know how huge those are...add a couple inches. Literally almost 6" length, probably bout 10" total with ballast. So, check em out....i'm curious to see these put to work with what some folks are getting from 150w'ers.

Cliffnotes: Home Depot has 300w equivalent CFL's for flowering

4200 Lumens, 300w equivalent (68w used), 2700k soft white, 14.95
Am I missing something here? It seems like everybody is all exited about this $15. CFL - FIFTEEN DOLLARS!!! Are you shittin' me? I can buy three 23 watters for a buck apiece = $3. (THREE DOLLARS!), but there are some differences:
1. I get about 600 extra lumens (3 x 1600 = 4,800).
2. My three CFL's burn about 1 watt more (3 x 23 = 69)
(that's less than 1 kw a month @ 24/7!).
3. With more, smaller, lights you get better coverage and much, much, closer to the plant - so you don't lose all your light energy to distance!

Oh yeah, did I mention, THREE DOLLARS!

the lumens dont add up like that. 3 bulbs at 1600 lumens is still 1600 lumens, you can just spread them around more, and get that 1600 lumen penetration from different angles. learn more about the lumen young jedi. the bigger lumen lights push the usable light farther from the bulb. putting one hundred 1600 lumen bulbs next to each other will still not push the usable light as far as one higher wattage bulb. it can be a little confusing at first i know. my 68 watt can be just as close as my 18 watts pretty much, but with 3 or 4 times the intensity at that distance= denser better buds.

and i can get 23 watt 2700k bulbs for .59 cents at my home depot!

Oh, here we go again - someone else that thinks they know what the hell they are talking about! Of course lumens don't add up like that - what's your point? They go to cover a larger area with multi point light source, they are a much more efficient way of covering the canopy

learn more about the lumen young jedi.
Why? One of the first things I learned was that "Lumens are for humans"! They have no real value in growing, except that they give a rough estimate of how bright the light will appear to a human's eye.

the bigger lumen lights push the usable light farther from the bulb.
Now you're just making shit up - maybe you should do a little research before you share your naive opinions! It's a matter of physics not merchandising. The Inverse Square Law is pretty simple (and hard to get around) "As the distance light travels is doubled, it's energy is reduced by a factor of four". Or do the laws of physics work different in the "Starwars Empire"?

my 68 watt can be just as close as my 18 watts pretty much, but with 3 or 4 times the intensity at that distance= denser better buds.
Actually you are getting less than 3 times the intensity, but you are paying more than 5 times as much! Do the math - where is the bargain? At $15. a pop, just how many of those do you use? And what do you mean "just as close - - - pretty much"?

The bottom line is $. Smaller, multiple, lights are more efficient, provide better coverage and (oh yeah, did i mention) THREE DOLLARS!

well buddy, i have one, and my friend gave it to me so it was free.

got that? 0 dollars. or does my math not compute in your emotional internet tirade universe?

If everybody could get them for free, I'd use them too! That's really not the point! At $15. they are a waste of money! It's your logic that doesn't compute. In the real world wasting money is stupid!

factor in the costs of the light fixtures and hardware too. im new at this but i know positioning the lights is part of the deal, and while it would be nice to have a few dozen goose neck lamps to put lights wherever i wanted them, i cant afford all that. if it makes you feel better to think you are the superior grower then go for it. i think my lighting configuration is working well for me.

Dude, relax! It's not about being a superior grower (something I never claimed to be!). For me, it's about sharing information.

In the long run, you pay more for lights that do less than pro HIDS, but it like paying interest on a credit card, Who got hundreds, easier to 10 to 15 bucks, but YO, did you know HD has a sale 4 23watt 2700k for $3.77. 1600 lumens a piece. 6400 lumens for 4 bucks.
