I’ve considered a Plan B: going with like a 600W dimmable HPS light. I’ve got two fans I want to run in the tent so I can just point one at the light to keep temps down. I’ve also heard HPS can fit a little better in my budget. What’s yalls thoughts? Any effect on plant health, yield, etc?

Apologize for all the back and forth. My seedlings are two weeks old today and I know it’s getting close to transplant time. I’d like to have everything in order before then. Really cussing myself for buying that damn blurple.

As a beginner, in a 2x4x5 you won't be able to pull off an HPS without a cool tube.

Good point. I know zilch about electrical wiring and had I not had someone help me build my rig I for sure would’ve either shocked the piss out of myself or burnt the home down. It sounds good to follow a diagram but I’ve blown up two qb96 by plugging pos and neg (unmarked) into wrong holes. Thankfully HLG replaced them.
I have a very simple modular qb96 build OP could use and have a killer setup. Using lamp chords and one driver and a few thermostat wires.

Op look into 4 qb132 with a meanwell lrs 350? I believe it is. You’ll get about 80 watts each board.
Or two qb96 with HLG 320h-54a
edit and if you don’t feel safe wiring your own up (totally understand) the HLG 150 is a good plug and play light for the price.

By cool tube do you mean it has the part where you run the charcoal fan through the light then duct it out of the tent? Getting an HPS with that feature you think would work? Better than the blurple?

Lol I ran HPS at 101-107F during my worst days
swear on my son I grew buds inside in over a hundred degree tent once. Used a reducer you make my 4” fan fit my6”HPS duct.....obviously didn’t work well.

On my budget at the moment and with this being my first grow I think I’m going to go one or two ways: 1. Keep the damn blurple for my first couple of grow until I know what is doing then look at something different. 2. 400w HPS w/dimmable ballast; run at 250 during veg then crank to 400 for flower with the MH bulb and hope I can keep temps down.

In addition to what you have listed you need a plug for the driver input. Or a power cord and water-resistant connector is a good option.
You'll wire the QB120 in parallel and you will need connectors (wago 221 series are a popular choice) and wire for the DC side. 18 gauge solid core wire works well for wiring the boards.
You can theoretically hang the four boards individually or you can build a frame out of aluminum angle. A good way to place them would be four boards in one column with the 280mm (longer side) side of the QB120 facing the 2ft side of your tent.

I’m 100% taking all of this info for the future. I will for sure build one of these once I get my feet wet. For now I just want to get everything up and going as easily as possible. Once I understand more and research more I will have a better idea of what I want. Heck I might want a bigger tent, etc after a grow or two! As much as it pains me to say the blurple or the hps might be my options budget/experience wise.

When you're ready for it you should be able to build a four board QB120 set-up with a HLG-240H-24A powering them for $220 to $250(using current price of parts).
