Hello everyone!
For the last year or so I've been daydreaming about going legal with things and taking my game outdoor. Im still fairly new with only a few harvests under my belt, but the chips are all sliding into place and I may get my shot for a late start this year in Colorado. That, or I will get the full grow season in 2016.
This might be a bit of a read, but I would like to explain what I plan on doing and ask for tips and advice from those who already have some experience with outdoor grows. I appreciate any help the members of this site can give, id really like to be successful and find a way to live my life as a farmer. We have been searching for land recently in CO, and I can definitely picture myself growing old near those mountains with my family.
Now, this is the plan so far. I will start out growing indoors around October or November, and will let my plants get as big as possible until weather permits them to go outside. I plan on having a simple greenhouse style enclosure up, nothing fancy, just PVC pipe staked into the ground and bent to form a upside down half pipe covered in plastic. The plants will go in there, directly into the earth, and grow from there until harvest time.
Now, I have concerns about space. The greenhouse structures like I want to build dont seem too big, and my goal is to grow five pound plants. I know that the expert growers can hit 15+ pounds, and eventually I would like to reach that point, but I know that comes from a person perfecting their art for years. Do you think the greenhouse would work with my goals, or would I be better off just growing out in the open?
Im also curious about the soil. I assume that the soil should be amended to provide an ideal home for my plants. How much would be enough though? 50 gallons per plant, 100 gallons per plant? This is a big question that I've been looking into, and cant find any real exact answers.
Also, if any of you have any tips for pests or critters or anything else at all please feel free to post them. I want to be as prepared as possible, but I know that im going to get hit with a lot of new things since I have never grown outdoors. I want to mitigate damage as much as I can since this will be an important crop for me.
We plan to connect with medical dispensaries at the start and sell what we can legally. I have read that those stores will only buy at pretty low prices, but for the first few crops that would be ok. The main goal here is to show that it is possible to bring a crop up legally, and provide it to a store in the same manner while turning a profit.
Thanks very much to everyone who reads. Ill be watching this thread close!
