Actually the window shakers don't allow outside air in unless it has a damper. Not promoting them but just clarifying that they do not allow air from outside in. As for portables they do work ok as they have progressed recently. The choice depends on your wants and needs. I would probably go for the portable in my situation due to stealth with only a small intake exhaust hood in my shed wall that I could hide. A whole house AC for a grow is a tad over kill IMO but a ductless would be a good choice as well.
I believe they do...Not to a great extent BUT, I have while disassembling them to clean, have found that many have incomplete seals and/or small gaps that allow unfiltered air in.......Even that little concerns me enough to have chosen The Tripp Lite portables as they keep a 100% seal!
The other point is that as the season turns cold. At some point the window rattler will not work anymore as they won't work when the temp outside is colder then in...

Hey guys. I'm new to growing and have setup my room with a 4x4
Veg tent with 600w MH and a grow tent with 2 1000w HPS bulbs. Everything is vented to the attic through 8" hoods. I also have a 8" blower scrubbing my grow tent.
My temps in the bloom tent are mid 80s. What size portable air conditioner would bring this temp down? I run at nighttime also.
The room is 10x12'
Why do you think that you have to reduce temps below 85 degrees in a bloom tent, or any tent. I would kill for 85 degrees running 2000 watts in a tent. Save your money, honey, because your temps are optimal, (unless you want blue bud)

Is that right? I've heard that was a little high. I'm simply googling this stuff so I have no experience to back it up.

After reviewing the evidence... It would be relatively hard to take Ryan seriously. I mean... Mountain Dew? Woah. I guess don't knock it til you try it but I'm going to break my first rule and judge this book by the cover

Of course it's right, I said it, didn't I.(lol)
90 degrees, your pushing it, as it WILL slow the plant down
85 degrees is good, plant is happy (like you on a beach)
80 degrees is optimal (sex on a beach, only a little sweat)
70 degrees a little cool (sex on the beach, no sweat)
65 degrees and below (purple plants love it, but no sex on the beach, it's too cold)

Sorry. That was rhetorical. Lol. That's a good rule. Never thought about it like that

I love my portable and it was cheap from Sears. The plug doesn't even get hot! Just make sure you drain it often or have a catch system to collect the water.

Well yes the cheap ones that aren't sealed well may leak some air but that's not the same as "they bring air from outside in" and again I didn't say they were a good choice just an option. Mine in my bedroom works well when temps outside are lower to a point and more effeicent as well. The condensing temp being lower than evaporator temp will not cause the unit to stop, again to a point.

True but costs a lot more and Mitsubishi is the only one to look at there for long term quality.
You have to keep them super clean too.....or you loose effectiveness and can get breakdowns faster if you don't.
The other plus though. You can get several outlets cover more rooms so YOU stay cool too.
But if it's only that one area your willing or wanting to cool - Portable.
I've had a 1 ton Pioneer ductless that I paid $700 for on Amazon. I have run it 24 hours a day for two years straight. My temps are usually 68-70. It is quiet and works like a champ. It was another $700 for install, including running a dedicated breaker to my panel. I would highly recommend this unit. I have the 110v version.
