Its def a worthwhile add-on to have.

Shouldn't need any pump to operate though, unless you're integrating dosers to your top off system, and getting extra technical with it.

You can manually adjust nutes and PH in the addback solution as needed by obvserving trends, or basically just fill it up with the next weeks mix if the top off res holds the same total volume as the main RDWC system.

An extra container placed up higher than the main system, with a line running down to a float valve in the main res is all you really need. Maybe add an inline shut off valve somewhere in between, to turn it off when needed.

Drill out the hole and install the float valve inside your control reservoir (not near any lines or plant roots, etc), somewhere above the main water level line, depending on the particular float design, and make sure nothing can ever interfere with the mechanism and cause floods. Adjust the float so it closes off right at the level you want.

They do make auto top off kits for aquariums that use a pump, along with special photo water sensors, etc.. Or even float switches (instead of valves). Not sure that I would trust them, though.. Not even the higher dollar premium ones. Too many negative reviews IMO.

Some plumb float valves directly into the RO unit or tap (with much higher pressures) to keep the system topped off, but then you run the risk of flooding non stop if the float malfunctions, compared to just having whatever is stored in another reservoir. Unless you have an overflow drain\catchment or something..

I personally wouldn't be able to trust any system like that as my rdwc is in a bedroom closet above a finished basement. I'm checking my tent at least once or twice a day anyway and it takes me less time to top off than check ph and ec.

That being said, it sure would be nice to be able to leave and go out of for a few days during a grow!
