Thats not it my man that plant has been girdled by a small rodent I have seen this many times now it is rotting!

I won't discount that at all. I have little experience with growing outdoors but theres definitely rot setting in either way.

Physical damage is a major entry point for disease. When critters create wounds, those wounds get easily infected - bacteria, fungal, “other”. The wound looks a bit “clean” to be something like fungal in origin, but the plant itself sure looks infected. Critters carry all sorts of nasty stuff. My guess is that it’s a secondary infection resulting from something chewing it the fuck up. I keep chicken wire around my veggie garden because of little assholes that do this kind of stuff.

Not sure what it is but peroxide/water 3 to 1 can kill some fungus and I have nursed a plant to finish with a pretty big hole in the stalk at the bottom using a hydrogen peroxide solution-
