Had a fire in my house last night because of my grow room, help with max volts/watts?

If u can afford it upgrade to the HID light and run some more electrical to that room. I did all new for my grow and did all 20 amp breakers, and a separate 220v run upgradable to 60 amps. If any of that was confusing then maybe get someone else to do it. Clean your room of pot related stuff and get a friend over to help you. Tell him you want to build an entertainment room or something that will require several higher amp outlets. If u are really looking to save, then just follow the above amperage advice and run extension cords fro. Circuits in other rooms. Following prper wire guage specifications and staying under 80% load should be fine for you on cords under 25'. Beyond that might require more difficult calculation. Just make sure you know what is being powered on each circuit you use from another room. See if your space heater has a lower wattage setting, I have a 2k space heater that also has a 900w setting that is adequate for my needs. Good search"what size wire do it need?" and the top link is a table of wire guage requirements for amps. The calculation the guy gave earlier is good, I don't remember which way he calculated, but I do: watts/volts = amps. So a 2000w heater on a 110v circuit is pulling 18 amps. More than what your breaker can handle alone. I only skimmed the responses but I think someone made that clear already. That heater is not going to constantly run at full load but I don't know how the breaker didn't just trip every time you tried to use it with so much stuff on it. That sounds like a big problem in itself.

5000 watts at 110v pulls 45+ amps. I would say you should get at least 80 amps of service in that room to allow for expansion. In the form of 4 20 amp breakers or my preference would be multiple 20s plus one larger breaker wired to a controller with a relay. I'm a fan of the dryer outlet personally allows for a mix of 110 and 220 service, though pricier. Let me know if you would like more details on that and I'll see if I can tell u what to tell your electrician buddy. The cheapest route would be the 4 20 amp breakers tho, I personally did like 6 of these, 4 outlets total 8 plugs on each run spread out a bit. I did my run simply and logically so I can tell which outlets are on which breaker. If your are more spread out maybe number them so u know which are on which breaker. Keep in mind also that 20amp service is barely adequate for a 2000w space heater. I'd probably use it, but I'd make extra sure nothing else was on the same beaker. Also another side note slightly more expensive, I put one gfci outlet on each run also. They are the time with the reset button like in bathrooms, it's basically a mini breaker that would trip if you dropped a toaster in the bathtub good to use around water. The one problem with wiring like this is that if one item trips it, every outlet on the run goes. The space heater would probably not be a good item for it. I actually can't run my ballasts on a gfci, something about the way theybstart up trips them, but I have the added security knowing I have it on my other stuff I'm splashing and spraying water around.

......Thanks! I'm using construction (i think 16g) extension cords from lowes, so hopefully they will be okay..... I'm not sure if i mistook your post, but I'd appreciate if you would try not to be an ass to me, im not here for someone to try to scare the shit out of me, im here to fix the problem i have.......

next, Growfine is being an ass? considering you already had a fire due to your lack of understanding,you DO NEED someone to scare the shit out of you. didn't the fire do that? electricity is not a joke! it is probably the deadliest thing you will deal with in your life.you got lucky! had your fire started after you fell asleep...
& if you think I am being extreme, please buy a small life insurance plan so your family doesn't have to pay to bury your sorry ass.

but really lots of great advice here, for ya frwasti but i would maybe check the heater in my house if it was 22 degreess in my pad... thats really cold man you could unplug your fridge if you really wanted to save some dough if you got a thousand watter it would definitely heat your room with the exaust,

12g, I was wrong about that. But the cord isn't hot at all, its been running for over a day. That cords pulling 220w now. In total my room is pulling ~1780 watts (set the heater to lower setting) not including the fans which i have no idea how much they use.

And i wasn't insulting him, but obviously the fire was a wake up call, and that's why im here for help. I know this is a problem, im trying to fix it. People don't come to these forums to get bashed, they come for help and to share experiences. Hopefully my topic will be a wakeup call to anyone else who was in the dark like me.

Also for the above poster who mentioned the heater having different settings, i have three. I checked the manual and the lowest is 1500w, im hoping that will keep me warm. Testing it right now..

Everyone else, thank you so much for your help. I'm still wondering if two 20amp breakers running 4 sockets will be good enough, though.

not an experienced grower by any means but i know a little about electricity, like GrowFine.com said u need at least another two mains leads into that room, u say5000watt, if it were me i would install a seperate small breaker panel in that room with a line from the mains but thats my 2 cents, use the formula GrowFine.com stated and aim for higher than watts needed to be safe so 5000 watts try and set up a breaker in the room that can handle maybe 5500, but in all honest way to much power consumption.

I agree with all who recommend a seperate box. You can have an electrician wire it up, and wire your gear later, so no suspicion. I suggest 240V. In any case, if it says 15 ampere max, think 14. If it says 10, think 9. With 240 you chop your amps in half. So a 1000W will pull 9 amps on 120v. On a 240 circuit, it will pull a hair over 4. PLEASE don't have a "buddy" bypass your meter. DEATH becomes you if you agree, my friend.

As stated before 2 20amp breakers with 4 sockets will not be enough. You already stated that you have 45amps of stuff already in the room. At a minimum you should go 3 just to handle what you have. I reccomended 4 so you could add extra items as needed. Remember that heater even at 1500w should be put on one of those breakers alone. I would probably be ok with putting that heater on a 15 amp line solo by itself if it were me, but is pushing the limits. Definitely not on your existing 15 amp breaker that is shared with the other electrical items in your room.

Anything that a 15 amp breaker can support can be fine on a 14g extension cord, I would stick to shorter than 25', any longer go to the 12g. Once you get the 20amp breakers put in, the 12g extension cord will support anything that the circuit will support.

To describe the needs for the specific wire thickness, basically, if you run to much juice through the line (in the form of amps) the thinnest area will burn first. 14g wire can support a 15 amp circuit, your 15 amp circuit should be run with at least 14g wire. The breaker is there so that it will trip if more amps than what the line can support is pumped through it. Remember you can always go thicker with wire, just not thinner. For example if you put a 20 amp item on the 20 amp breaker and use the 14g extension cord, then that cord is likely to run hot and have the risk of catching fire. I once actually put a 20 amp compresser on a 16g extension cord when I was alot younger, it immediately caught fire before even tripping the breaker.

I agree 100% of not bypassing the meter. Not only is it morally wrong, it's stealing and straight up shitty, but if you get caught then it could bring legal action and the cops to your door. The electric company knows whats up if you're electricity is kicking up big time for exactly the same 12 hours a day. The system is automated so they probably won't ever look, and if you are paying your bills they won't care to bring it to the attention of the law. The legal action for not paying your bill, or stealing electricity could easily lead to a warrant to pull your electrical bill and search your crib.

btw i use something similar to this http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-755320-Ceramic-Digital-Display/dp/B000TTV2QS (i wanna say the specs were somewhere around 1500watt) plus a 250mh(not huge but deff better than cfl) light and two t5's add in the water pump and air pump i still would put mine at half watt the usage as ur setup and sometimes have to turn the heater down, this is in a roughly 10' x 15' area in the winter in new england so it gets pretty cold out, all i can say to help u is insulate if ur worried about heat.

As an ignorant American I always assume everyone does things the same as us, and forget the rest of the world uses 220v. If thats the case, and your standard is 220v then maybe 40 amps total will be ok. I'd still go more though :p.

15 amps x 240v = 3600w max
you should only go upto 3000w
for safty not 5000w !!!!!

-I've got 10x23w CFL's [plugged vertically on surge protectors 2&3]
-The additional 23w CFL that is in the light socket
-1x 12v ac adapter for fans [plugged into surge protector "1"]
-An air purfier (55w) [plugged into surge protector "1"]
-Space heater (2200w) [plugged directly into socket]
-Computer with 750w power supply/monitor (cant find monitors wattage) [plugged directly into socket]
2 20 amp circuits should be fine. put the space heater all by itself on 1 circuit
figure 300 watts for lights plus PC plus at most 200 watts for a fan(an extreme high quesstimate for a 12 volt fan) gives you about 1250 watts or 11 amps.you could get away w/ adding a 400 watt light & still have a safety margin. that will leave the room's orignal 15 amp breaker for whatever you need to run in the room.

Is your outlet wiring copper or aluminum? If aluminum you are definitely in for more fires. Your breaker should have tripped. 5000w is way too much for that circuit. You are asking for fire.
 
1st ditch the pc as stated above a growroom is no place for it
you need to do something w/ the spaceheater & air purifier -each draws more than the circuit can handle.get them on seperate breakers.they each need a dedicated breaker.
As for extension cords, anything that draws near 10 amps or 1000 watts needs a 14 gauge cord & over 10amps needs a 12 gauge cord.only use a cord as long as you need. If you are going to use a 100 foot cord & leave 85 feet coiled up,wrap it around a full gas can. Coiling up a cord is asking for a fire so you might as well do it properly.
