H.A.F. growing stink-flowers in dirt with QB's

If anyone is good at flower-clones/monster-cropping, advice would be appreciated. I've had 3 successful attempts, but it was mostly luck. Here's my knowledge so far and any gaps that could be filled in would be great - if not I will be experimenting with these to see what works.

I went back and looked at pics (date stamps) and these are doing a lot better than the last batch. Might be the strain, because my seedling/rooting process has been set for a while.

Anyway, it took almost a month for the first new single leaves to pop on the last batch, and I'd like to knock off a week or so if I can.
IMG_6433.JPG
I couldn't really tell where the sprouts were coming from, but they were ugly little things with deformed leaf-things about 3 weeks later
IMG_6545.JPG
After that, I was disappointed because there were only 1-3 sprouts per plant on the 3 that re-vegged. I had heard how bountiful and "monster" they were.
I then found out that all you need is one - and patience. Once you get a sprout, it's the nodes off that sprout that go crazy. The "Christmas Wreath" monster I did was from 2 sprouts.

This GDP had 1 sprout. I ended up with a 4-prong manifold like plant
IMG_6786.JPG I flipped her in the above pic then and got about 2 oz out of it. Later on I also buried that mess on the trunk that was the original top bud. I brushed it with come clonex then added soil. After harvest that section had rooted like mad.
IMG_8374.JPG So that's it. everything I know is anecdotal. "Here's what happened" - but just a general knowledge as to why.

Here are a few questions I can't find answers to .

Since they were already in flower, should I think about watering them more than I would a seedling, or at least starting sooner? I am wondering because
  • unlike a seedling, the stems already have good structure established to deliver water, so I don't want to starve them.
  • On the other side, there isn't anything up top growing that needs water. I now know that everything I see will be dead or dying by the time it sprouts.
  • But I need that stuff to live until it sprouts... so how much water does it need?

Should it get a light veg-type feed early to bump it in the right direction?

These I can check on a few plants to see the difference if no one knows

The other question is whether or not there is anything I can do to speed up the re-veg process. The only thing I can think of would be the light schedule, but I don't know if I would lean towards 20/4 or 16/8. That is one I am not checking because I know 18/6 works - even if it takes a while.

Haaaaaaapppy growing! :weed:

I also want to see what a regular veg-clone does if taken from a monster mother ;)

Thought I would mention that I really only want one clone to take. More than that, and whichever one looks best is going into a 5 gal pot. Any others I'll put in 2gal and flip as soon as they show regular leaves again. I can't kill successful plants, but I want one good one to play with like a big bonsai tree ;)

I hate taking pics of the NL now. The buds look great but overall it's a mess.
These are looking good though.

The Hulk hasn't been touched in a while. I was going to lollipop all the inner shoots, but I think I'll just let her run her course.
IMG_9950.JPG
The skycrawler has some huge leaves, but no stretch at all. I can't imagine what the stacked buds will look like. She's lighter green. might be the strain, but I'm gonna bump up the N next feed. They haven't gotten much of anything yet - I've been hesitant because of the other plants issues, and I think it has paid off for the most part. I have pruned an inside fan leaf or two every day once it opened up enough for shade, but I think that leaving the outer ones more than makes up for it. They are Yuuuuuuuuuuge!IMG_9952.JPG

And here's the dry-final on the 4 contest plants. Three plants were for the most part identical smell-wise, but the Dyna-gro plant was sweeter, so I kept it separate. I'll get a bud-porn pic or two next time I burp them. Everything in the jars is what wouldn't fit through that half inch cage.IMG_9946.JPGDynagro plant was 42g
The other three plants totaled 160g, 74g of tops, 86g of nugs.

I wanted to install my new idea, so here's the goods.
First, just a piece of plastic mesh cut to fit the diameter of the jar and keep the Boveda packs separate and allow a little more airflow around them.

The Dyna-gro
IMG_9955.JPG
and the buds and nugs from the other three

The good, the awesome and the ugly... in reverse order
IMG_9973.JPG I have raised the light as high as it will go, and dimmed it. had a leaf fall off on it's own when I was watering. Hope it at least makes it to flower.

But if not, I'm thinking her babies have a chance.

But here is the Hulk, my redemption that I have no completely lost my green thumb.

Busy morning. The rooting hormones worked like a charm, and these couldn't wait. They weren't bound, but the bottom of the cups were covered. The yellowing leaves made me decide to feed them, then everything else.
IMG_9977.JPG I gave them a good soaking with a microbe-heavy low-ppm brew, then let them drain while I got the soil ready.
I have 3 planted in used soil from the contest grow. It has been rinsed to low ppm, added a little dolomite and checked the pH (6.2 in slurry) but it was still moist from the composting. I put it in a 7 gallon cloth pot, then folded the top over and put a cinder-block on top. I let it bake in 90+ degree sun since the harvest (11th) and it is still moist. All in 2 gallon pots under 60w QB
IMG_9979.JPG
The other 4 are in new soil. I had a mix of FFHF and FFLD on hand, but it looked a little perlite-heavy so I bought another bag of FFHF and mixed it in.

I took enough soil to fill 3 pots and wet it with the same feed I used on the cups, then divided it back between 4 pots. I put the cutting in the middle then domed up the moist soil around the root ball and raised it up to the level I wanted, adjusting the soil under it. I then filled the outside with dry new soil.

I left a few inches at the top of each pot to add amended soil to it next feed.. I broke down and bought more nutes... Still Fox Farm, but their organic "happy frog" top-feed stuff (attached). I'm tired of nute burn, but will grow semi-organically, giving them PK boosts and what not until I run out of the other stuff. It recommends all the microbe heavy stuff I had already decided on keeping in my inventory, including Big Bloom, so the change won't be that expensive. The first real feed called for is with the "Jump Start" stuff that will arrive before they need a feed. but there are only a few extra components, that use minimal amounts and are relatively inexpensive.

And as far as the nute purchase, still within my $250/mo budget! Anyone new here, I base my spending on what I used to pay for an ounce every month. I can exist on about a quarter bag/week, if I have to... I don't anymore...

But I have a list of purchases to be made on amazon (might not buy from them, but it's a good way to build a shopping list) and religiously stay within that budget. I have a surplus ;)

Seriously though, since I'm on a comfortable but fixed budget, it's a system that works. Right now I have a spare pH pen (<$50), I am getting a new R/O set-up (<$75 but price increasing) for when this one dies, etcetera. I want a good fan for my tent, but having emergency back-ups for my essentials is more important than having a quieter fan in a tent I use every once in a while.

Also, if you use an RO, check the discharge #'s. My pure is 0.0-0.2 ppm, and a perfect 7.0 neutral. The run-off goes through three of the four filter cartridges (the last 'de-ionizes'?) and is still only 20-ish ppm, and 7.0 pH. I bottle it and use it either on my vegetables to thin out nute run-off, or for flushes that require an abundance.

This is why I got divorced and my daughters occasionally hate my guts ;) Pure logic and numbers.

Monster-crop update
Day 17 from snip:
IMG_9988.JPG
All are still viable. and all have started re-vegging with the new little round single-leaves
IMG_9987.JPG IMG_9984.JPG
And everything I have read about flower-clones is that it is a "new process", "interesting" and shit like that. People do it but know one knows anything other than "it works sometimes".

So all 7 have the single-leaves showing. A week from being put in solo cups. 2 days from being transplanted, and I have 100% re-veg... I think.
I don't know if those leaves are what counts, or if some still may fail to produce sprouts.

If all 7 sprout, I'll ditch the big-pot idea and just flip all 7 shortly after they show true-leaves and just do a SOG.

No death and destruction in this room...
IMG_9991.JPG
The 4 center limbs are really stretching on the Banner, can't tell much difference between the main tops and the others from the top.
IMG_9992.JPG
The SOG isn't stretching much, but the tops on the 3 main limbs are more pronounced.

No new pics, but the 2 flower children got fed lightly (300ppm). I am liking the FF Big Bloom more and more now. It is only 0-0.5-0.7 but it is basically an organic tea. Earthworm and bat shit. Anyway, since I now pH everything (didn't used to bother with RO unless adding nutes) adding something to the plain RO to give it ppm to adjust is helpful.

I think the clones will now be on the same schedule. I watered the 4 that were in new soil and dry, the other 3 in old soil that was moist to start with are drying fine, and all will probably need fed at the same time next.

And the big-ugly got that top-feed Fruit and Flower last week and isn't due for anything for a few weeks. Just starting to show a few brown pistil-tips. Instead of soaking her from here on out, I am just giving her a half gallon or so every other day (and she drinks it). I figure that since I am just watering in nutes that are already there, excess run-off is probably not the goal.
IMG_9996.JPG
Stoner thought - I wonder if having an unhealthy plant just makes them ripen quicker. Like on the contest plants. None of their flowers were "fat", but all were still dense for their size and not larfy. They only went 52-54 days in flower, but they were ready for harvest amber-wise (about 10% for me) and look perfectly find in the jar. The taste I have had so far shows that even early it puts me on my ass like the other skunk I have.

Since I don't see this plant going the distance, harvest will be on the 12th (21 days from today) or sooner.

I tried making vape juice with some flowers. I had been considering it, but I've never tried a "professional" THC vape cartridge so I have no clue the kind of concentration or anything I am looking for.

I got this article from the NOVA girl and it pointed me in the right direction, but it still doesn't say what concentration a standard vape juice is, I guess because the PG and VG don't have to be vaped? Like cooking with them?

https://ardentcannabis.com/truth-hunters-propylene-glycol-vs-vegetable-glycerin/?afmc=7u&utm_campaign=7u&utm_source=leaddyno&utm_medium=affiliate

Anyway, I worked out the math for how much flower it was going to take to make 120ml of juice at a 15mg/ml concentration but when I added it all together the PG didn't cover the flower. I had to add more and it should be 10mgTHC/ml. I just don't know if that concentration will get a stoner high when you think about a vape cartridge holding a milliliter or two, and how long it takes to empty one.

But I smoked for 30 years and vaping helped me quit. This stuff doesn't have the bite of nicotine but it might help me ditch that part of the vape too. Just don't know if it'll stone you. I'll have to get my daughter to try it next time she visits. It might be great...

Big ugly. She just keeps getting worse. I hope she ripens before she dies - and that it didn't transfer to the clones.
IMG_0019.JPG
But if you zoom in far enough she looks great!
IMG_0022.JPG
And the tops are still doing what they are supposed to do. But some bud-leaves are starting to crisp too. I'm wondering if the gnats got to this one worse than I thought on top of everything else.IMG_0023.JPG

So to keep from getting in a bad mood, I always check her first, then these ;)
The Banner and the SOG both have lush foliage,
IMG_0013.JPG IMG_0014.JPG
The Hulk has needed no maintenance whatsoever since the last stretch a few weeks ago. I did prune the new shoots
leading up to each top
at week 2-ish, so there's not many hidden tops.
IMG_0016.JPG But because there is no stretch on the SOG I already see some 'inside' leaves to be pruned next watering just to keep the tops getting light.

Day 20 for the clones, and I have definite 3-toed leaves on all 5 that I topped (the "T" numbers), and the 2 that I didn't top are a little behind. That delay may cost them their lives ;) Day 28 I cull. I should see actual sprouts by then.
IMG_0065.JPG IMG_0066.JPG IMG_0067.JPG IMG_0068.JPG IMG_0069.JPG IMG_0070.JPG IMG_0071.JPG
And I have no complaints here. Starting to smell interesting. One has a piney diesel smell, the other is more floral/spicy. Interesting mix for the room.

And the verdict is in - GNATS. they just hatched. About 2-3 weeks since I had the issue on the other plants (and "not on this one" :wall:) They all got treated at the same time, but this was in a different room and never showed any winged bastards on the fly strips until today.

I coated the surface with DE (after pic). Anyway, it wasn't nute burn...

These are just starting week 5 of flower. Top feed of 3 tbsp of Fruit & Flower (one per gallon of soil) and watered in with a light mix of nutes per the schedule. I'm going to have to prune a bunch of leaves if the SOG doesn't stretch. It's getting moisture between the leaves IMG_0075.JPG IMG_0076.JPG
The biggest difference though is in the tops.
Here's the Banner - needs a little Rogaine ;)
IMG_0082.JPG
And the SOG - Full-fro. (and a lot more sugar everywhere)

I started a new thread just for the clones. Link in signature block.

I'll still update here, but that one is a "how flower-clones work" page. Since I am looking at possibly 100% success rate, I wanted to document the process by itself. There is almost nothing out there on the webz.
