Grow box for the garage

Hello all, new poster long time lurker. I just got the medical card and can grow it legally finally. Having a family I’m limited on where I can actually grow.

Can anyone recommend a grow box set up? I’m looking to do something in the garage and can legally grow 6 plants at a time. I’m pretty sure you won’t get 6 in a box but would like the biggest yield possible

I’ve looked at some options online and it’s not always clear they are meant for marijuana or not. I definitely don’t want to spend $500 on something that really isn’t a good option for what I want.

What’s my best options to get started?

You could always buy a tent. What size area do yo have to work with and whats your budget?
Budget is $700 or less. In the garage. Can get clones from the local dispensary and that’s not part of the $700.

Do they sell tents that have a kit with the ideal sized led lights for the tent or isn’t this better to be purchased separately?

I had been looking at a couple grow boxes (see attached) but being new to this I’m not sure how good they would be.

Tents are almost always the best option, from a cash investment standpoint....Unless you happen to already have materials on hand to physically construct a box, the tents win out. The reflective material alone is nearly worth the cost of most tents.
As an upstart grow, $700 is a workable budget, but there are a LOT of factors needing to be considered before making any moves.
Lets start here, you say you're area is limited to the garage, so what type of climate do you live in?

That is four plants in a metal cabinet. 4" carbon filter, ducting, 170 CFM fan, duct muffler, 315 CMH . . . I would consider this a less than average grow for me. Normally 3 plants in 3 gallon smart pots yields a bit more than this run in 1 gallon pots. 100 watt reptile heat lamp for additional heat when the lights are out in the Winter.

I bet you can find a used light on Craigslist maybe a 250 HPS to get you started or build an LED. Lots DIY plans on here for that sized space.

I think a 3x3 tent is enough room for most people to get enough product for personal use. In that size I would grow/scrog 2 plants personally. Aim for 40/50 watts per square foot.
A package deal is great if it has the stuff you want included. I would buy everything individually cause I’m fussy.
Gorilla grow tents are well liked but expensive. Don’t buy the cheapest tent available.
I like my timber grow light. Quantum boards are popular too but you could ruin your budget right here.
Remember fans can be noisy especially if running full power. Most people oversize the fan and turn it down.
If things are going good get another tent and you can have different strains and different harvest dates/more plants. Not to mention if something hermies it may be isolated to 1 tent.
Your first picture looks alright but it seems too cheap to be built with a proper carbon filter. I would be doubtful you would be happy. The second picture is nothing more then a small cabinet for seedlings at best. It would be no good for you.
These are the opinions of a rookie.

thanks guys. After looking into it more it seems a tent is the way to go. Living in Oklahoma the weather can be unpredictable. Hot summers and can get pretty cold in the winter time.

What size tent would be ideal for 6 plants? It seems to vary depending on where you look. Just for a beginning grower looking to hopefully grow enough to cover personal use

In my opinion 2’x2’ is the minimum size you should grow 1 plant. Any more then that and you will be fighting nature. These plants will veg for a couple weeks even on 12 12.
So that means 4’x6’ should grow 6 plants.
You can squeeze 6 in a 4x4 tent but you will probably regret it.
You will also find that 6 strains will grow different heights, making it hard to set your light the right height.

I built a 6X6X8 in my garage with the exterior walls making up two of my walls. I had some leftover OSB and insulation I used for parts of it and just framed it up with 2X4's, R-13 insulation, and used "hardboard" from Lowes for the interior to save money. With you being in Ok I think the biggest problem will be in the summer keeping it cool, especially with any HID bulbs. I bought a portable swamp cooler that helped to an extent, but with your humidity it wouldn't help much. I also picked up (craigslist) a window AC that I haven't installed yet. I have 1 15A circuit for lights and one for fans/heater. I am allowed 6 plants also and it is nice to have room to move things around in my room. If you have the space it is easier to build larger and use part of the space initially then when resources allow you can add more lighting for a larger footprint. I think the room ran about $200 to build. Just my 2C worth.
