Ground Zero Mosque

New York (CNN) -- Plans to build a mosque two blocks away from ground zero have set off an emotional debate among area residents and relatives of victims of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.

For those who don't know, Muslims have a long history of destroying important symbols of other cultures and building Mosques on top of them. This is meant to symbolize Islam's dominance over non-Muslims.

Examples of Mosques built on top of the ruins of Churches are found all over Spain and in other places.

In Afghanistan giant Buddha statues that were thousands of years old were destroyed by the Taliban because they were "an offense to Allah."

The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem is built on top of the Temple Mount - Judaism's most holy site. It is for Muslims an important symbol of their domination and subjugation of the Jews that they want more than anything to recapture. This, more than anything, explains the roots of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

There are many more examples of the practice of desecration of the important sites of other cultures and of the building of Mosques on these sites.

I'm just wondering if all the defenders of Islam are aware of this well documented practice and what they think of them building a Mosque so close to Ground Zero.

The defenders of Islam won't give a shit. As far they're concerned, the sun shines out of a Muslims arse.

rick i couldnt care less if they have a mosque at ground zero.
the dome of the rock was built over a thousand years ago... if you look at the christian churches built since then you would find countless of them being built on top of pagan/ native places of worship so that practice isnt limited to islam

I am all for the construction of this community center.
Well said. It's a community center, with such bonafide intentions that the proponents went to the board for an opinion. Muslims are capable of doing good for society; it's not just a Christian thing....

Rick is like the Glenn beck of the forum. Trying to make something out of nothing....

Actually, I think I first saw Hannity having a conniption about this. But nonetheless, it is something out of nothing.

Ahhh, I love the smell of xenophobia in the morning.

Interestingly, from wikipedia:

"The Dome of the Rock is located at the visual center of a platform known as the Temple Mount, which Muslims refer to as the "Noble Sanctuary". It was constructed over the site of the Second Jewish Temple which was destroyed during the Roman Siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE. In 637 CE, Jerusalem was conquered by the Rashidun Caliphate army during the Muslim conquest of Syria.

The Dome of the Rock was erected between 689 and 691 CE. The names of the two engineers in charge of the project are given as: Yazid Ibn Salam from Jerusalem and Raja Ibn Haywah from Baysan. Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan who initiated construction of the Dome, hoped that it would “house the Muslims from cold and heat”[2] and intended the building to serve as a shrine for pilgrims and not as a mosque for public worship.[3] Historians contend that the Caliph tried to create a structure which would compete with the existing buildings of other religions in the city."

I'm less amused by sleazy arguments in the service of racist ignorance. It seems the Jewish temple was destroyed by the pagan Romans and not Muslims. The Dome of the Rock was built not as a mosque but as a practical shelter, symbolically intended to compete with rather than dominate other religions.

The suggestion that an Arab desire to 'recapture' the Dome lies at the root of the Arab-Israeli conflict is a bit of a simplification. In the same way that saying Catholics are child-molesting perverts is a simplification. The entire Mount, AFAIK is theoretically open to people of all religions, though Israel regularly denies entry to Muslims on one pretext or another.

Check out Google Earth sometime. Scroll over to the Gaza Strip and study the difference between the living conditions of the indigenous Palestinians living as refugees on the most overcrowded strip of land on the planet - and the mainly European and American settlers occupying the land they drove the Palestinians from under force of arms in 1947.

But perhaps that's more real-world data than you're used to.

Agreed.

Id like to see them build some crazy ass sky scraper, something iconic ya know?
Skyscrapers are cool. I love to go to the top of em and hang over the edge.
As far as the Mosque is concerned. I could care less if they build a mosque. Same with churches and synagogues. More power to em. I don't do rel;igion but hold no grudge against those who do, as long as they don't evangalize or try to indoctrinate me.
And if it is going to be a community center then great as long as it is open to all and not just muslims.

My reading comprehension is just fine, as are my analytical skills:

Cordoba House project calls for a 15-story community center including a mosque, performance art center, gym, swimming pool and other public spaces.

"They own the land, and their plans don't have any zoning changes," Sheffe said. "They came to us for our opinions and to let us know their plans. It was purely voluntary on their part."

The 12 members who were at the meeting voted unanimously to support the project.

"It will have a real community feel, to celebrate the pluralism in the United States, as well as in the Islamic religion," Khan said. "It will also serve as a major platform for amplifying the silent voice of the majority of Muslims who have nothing to do with extremist ideologies. It will counter the extremist momentum."

"I think it's the right thing to do," said Marvin Bethea, who was a paramedic at ground zero. "I lost 16 friends down there. But Muslims also got killed on 9/11. It would be a good sign of faith that we're not condemning all Muslims and that the Muslims who did this happened to be extremists. As a black man, I know what it's like to be discriminated against when you haven't done anything."

Herbert Ouida, whose son was killed in the attacks, supports the project as a way to bridge cultural divide.

"I understand the anger, the bitterness and hatred, but it only generates more hatred," Ouida said. "Such a large part of the world has this faith, and to say anyone who has this faith is a terrorist, it's terrible."

"Three hundred of the victims were Muslim, that's 10 percent of the victims," she said. "We are Americans too. The 9/11 tragedy hurt everybody including the Muslim community. We are all in this together and together we have to fight against extremism and terrorism."

The (Great) Mezquita (of Córdoba or Cordova), now known as Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (English: Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption) is a Roman Catholic Cathedral originally built as a Mosque on the place (and partly with materials) of what previously had been a Christian Visigothic Church[1]

Spain has thousands of Mosques that were built on top of Churches during the Muslim occupation.

CNN is 'muslim propaganda'?

My fiancee, who is also Jewish, often reads your posts and wonders if you are off the deep end. As you would imagine, she is a huge supporter of Israel's right to exist but has enough sense to know that NOT EVERY MUSLIM IS A TERRORIST and NOT EVERY DISSENTING OPINION IS ANTI-SEMITISM.

I don't need to read a book to know that it is pure silliness to rail against a community center simply because of the religion of those building it.

Right, but some Muslims are TERRORIST right? And the Muslims who are TERRORIST do not like you or your Jewish girlfriend... I'm sorry but this makes me sick. I wonder how likely it would be the people of this country would have supported this idea on 9-12-2001?? Oh wait... I found a great spot for the new Mosque! I think they should put it right behind where this guy in this pic is standing.

I notice you don't choose to call attention to the passage from your link that states;
The site on which the Mezquita stands has long been a sacred space – it was host to a Roman temple dedicated to Janus and a Visigothic cathedral dedicated to St Vincent of Saragossa before the mosque was constructed in the 8th century. Finally, a cathedral was added inside the mosque by the Christian conquerors in the early 13th century.

Nice cherry picking, Rick.

How does any of that have anything to do with NYC or 911? You are MISSING THE POINT! Let's all take a break from trying to prove how smart we all for a second and ask yourself this... What was 911? It was an attack on OUR country, carried out on Americans by Muslims. Not all Muslims, Just enough Muslims to kill thousands of Americans. Americans who did nothing to these people but be "American"!!! Get it? They do not like you. Why are you so quick to defend them? No we do not have to build them a Mosque, no we do NOT have to forget 911 and just assuming because it has been a few years all Muslims are now our friends is the mentality that will get us attacked again. The 911 hijackers were trained here. Sorry mate, maybe they should prove they can stop being primitive animals before I roll out the red carpet for them in Time Square. I would love to see some of you go to a country like Yemen so you can feel the "Muslim Love" there for us Americans.
