GOING OVERBOARD- First grow, first post- Journal 1

Two questions...

-Should I trim the ones I just put into veg...If so into what shape?

-I have a handheld pyrometer, What is the ideal cola temp vs light height?

I've been busy with regular life as well, I am way behind on my thread!

I'm glad to see some nice ladies in flower room. +rep again for the clean and professional work. I love looking at your pics.

For the roots, some strains take to cuttings better than others, what did you use for your rooting mix again? For example, Sour Grapes, ATF, Chemdawg 3 clone very well, DJ Short BB is decent too. I noticed my Sweet Tooth and Agent Orange don't clone as well for me. I threw my Sweet Tooth mom into flower room a few days ago.

To be honest, I measure by mL and by what the Botanicare feeding chart and the hydro store guy tells me.

Trimming, you can top them and make them grow bushy. I would do this and lollypop the bottom 4-6" because the lower leaves don't get that much light anyways, and this allows air to circulate better around your plants. I usually take the lower branches when I lollipop and use them for clones as well as tops.

I like to have my temp around the cola around 74-76 degrees. I have a 400w hps so I keep it about 12-14" above my ladies. You don't want the light too close even if it's cool because you will give your plants light radiation burn. I have my thermostat/humidity meter on the wall and the temp. sensor level to the top of my plant. This tells me the temp at that level so I know my ladies won't get burned.

For the clones, you used Advanced Nutrients plugs right? I can't remember which one those were. What's the floor temp. in the dome?

The Moms are slowly being cleaned up on the bottom and I use those for cuttings. I try to make the plant bushy for more cutting and budding sites.

My clones that I cut about a month ago now fully rooted and growing.

Ringo's Sour Tsunami seeds, organic grown, sprouted in 3 days, had to transplant to 4" cube today. 1.5" root sticking out of the bottom the day after I took of the heat pad tray and transftered to non-heated tray.

I noticed my Sweet Tooth and Agent Orange don't clone as well for me. I threw my Sweet Tooth mom into flower room a few days ago. I used about 1l of water to saturate the perlite and root shooters. I used about 5ml clonex, 2ml cal/mag with ro water. It comes to 350ppm. I have 3 strains in there and all are taking there sweet ass time. I didnt add much to come to 350ppm. I didnt even add 25% whats recomended. I cant imagine what ppm your at. I just didnt know to feed them that much? Maybe this is my issue.

To be honest, I measure by mL and by what the Botanicare feeding chart and the hydro store guy tells me. I do the same, Just dont have a feeding chart. Just a maximum list.

I usually take the lower branches when I lollipop and use them for clones as well as tops. I lollypopped the two I have in soil. I like how its concentrating the energy up top. What week do u say Lollypoppling should be done? I think my Grape god strain stays short so I dont think I need to top it.

I noticed a little light burn on my OG Kush when it rocketed up. I raised the light and keep the terminal bud/ top of plant around 70-79 (Ive read 82 is max). I just want to know at what temp bud growth slows down?

For the clones, you used Advanced Nutrients plugs right? I can't remember which one those were. What's the floor temp. in the dome? Yes there AN plugs. The floor temp depends on ambient temps. The floor temp is always about 5degrees warmer than the outside temps. Im having trouble with this though. I have to have it set one specific way or the floor temps and ambient tmeps are the same. As long as I dont mess with it, it stays right. I have to keep my light 2ft over the tops. I figured I could keep it 6" off the top of the dome but I was wrong?

Looking good!!

Thanks for the reply!

Right on Dustybowlz!

For the Advanced Nutrients plugs, you're not suppose to use any nutes with those, just water. They say everything is already added to medium, just keep moist with water. I use rockwool cubes so they come neutral with nothing, so I use my rooting mix solution. I actually had a conversation with two of the guys at the hydro store today, one of them love the AD plugs, the other rockwool. They both said the AD works good, just got to water them a lot more than the rockwool.

Another new trick I use is when I plant a cutting into the cube, I use a plant label and stick it in next to the cutting as a support. The cuttings don't wilt and after 3-4 days I remove the labels and stick at end of cube. When the stem bends, the plants energy goes to correcting itself instead of growing up. I have my 2 T8 bulbs 1/4" above the plastic dome. It's about 4" above the cuttings.

As far as the lollypopping, you can do it anytime during veg, in this stage the plant will heal itself very fast. Just remember to always leave 60% of foliage on plant and give a couple of days to recoup, then continue to trim off leaves and branches. You can keep topping different spots to make tops even more bushy. I do this with my ATF mom a lot, she grows about 1/3 more top shoots after I top. If you do any trimming during flower, just remember to do it after the first 2-3 weeks of intial flower phase.

As far as the light temp., try to keep the window smaller, like a 5-7 degree difference max. I'm not sure at what height the colas will not grow as efficient, but I know too close will either burn, if not give the plant radiation poisoning.

The clones floor heat is important as far as the speed of roots. Consistancy is key for this as well. I have mine set at 78 but I know at night it drops a couple of degrees when the lights go off. The colder the ground, the slower the roots take. Also, how far did you put cuttings in the plugs? I like to cut off the lowest node and about 1/2" below is where I make my cut. I also use a razor and scrape off the skin on the sides of the stem that will be inside the plug. I spread alittle bit of Rootech around the area and node where I cut off, then I plug in where I feel alittle bit of the stem push into the rockwool at the bottom of the hole I make. It can't be too snug around the stem or the stem will suffocate and not produce clones. Don't trip as far as the clones takings there time, they will still root and you can also take some new cuttings and try changing your method a bit to see any difference. I like to experiment to see the difference first hand. Keep that light close if you can for the cuttings.

Good luck!

Lots going on.

All the seeds I planted started growing nuts! So I murdered them.. At the same time I moved the two biggest ones into flower. I had more room and havent gotten my cloning dialed ( which pisses me off btw, I wish I could just get a good environment set up for these clones and be done with it..) and a friend had some extra clones he was going to toss, so I took em.

A week later I moved two more ladies into flower and cleared up lots of space in the veg room.

This is one week from the last photo. I was watching these plants closely and one day they were cool, the next they got some sort of brown algae? I was told its due to light leaks so I made a disk outa panda film that coveres my hydroton. So far the algae is gone and the ladies are growing well again. It was weird though, I didnt do anything different than I did in the past?

So a friend, like most people, cure in glass jars. I picked up one an somehow grabbed a soft part in the glass. I "squeezed" too hard and somehow busted/pushed my thumb through the side of the jar, cutting the crap out of the palm of my hand. tsk tsk tsk.... cheap ass glass.....
