Germinated till seed cracked

Hey everyone,

I started germinating a bag seed last Wednesday and it cracked open on Sunday just a little and a root was just barely coming out the side.

Being my first time I think I might have got too excited about this and planted it too early.

I watered the soil a little then put it in 1/4 inch deep and covered it.

I'm pretty sure the seed is more than a year old. Do you think it will have enough energy to surface? Let alone crack through the rest of the way out of the seed?

Be patient. Only time will tell. If it doesn't sprout in a week then it's probably not going to.

Yes, be patient. The max I've had to wait for the seedling to push its way through the soil was some 2 weeks... so, give it time.

Make sure that you put the sprouted end pointing down.

So the seed is up and new growth is pointing down.

I was worried about the same thing, although i have germed many seeds before...i had a few that i thought died off.....week later i noticed something...it was a chute! i must of put it too deep....it did come through, so as long as you saw a tap root and do not let it sit in mud i can come up!

Yup, just hang in there. Other reasons for slow growth at the beginning is a cool room, try and warm the seeds up to get them started.
I am growing first time right now too, all seeds germed, on day 2 in rockwool, one tiny shoot started. Once I get home this evening, I imagine there will be a few!

Growth has progressed! It goes very fast as I had checked before I went to bed and merely 6.5 hours later I wake up and BAM!

dont over water it!!

dude your soil is so wet i looks like it is actually pooling on the top. aeriate your soil and dont over water. get those lights close and good luck

One interesting thing is on stages of seed growth that says to put the seed pointed end up just bellow the surface. Forcing the new root to grow towards the surface a little then start going down. By the time 72 96 hours has passed the seed cover is thrust above the soil level. Total new root growth shown to be about 2". In 5 days a seedling stem should be present.

I think this will add to the strength of the stem. Any one?

I was wondering is this how most people are doing it? with the new growth pointing down and the seed coat closest to the surface? i like the idea of my root heading down right away. so most of my germinated seeds are planted with the root down. they always grow. Thanks

I am in a similar situation, but I am using rockwool. Just to be sure, I don't water until the surface is dry right? I want to do this right....
Also, in Jorege Cervantes book, he mentions to put CFL's 12-18 inches from seedling, here I read a few inches...

Keep moist never soaking wet. I use a mister bottle for my seedlings and clones. I mist them twice a day. I had a big problem when i was first starting because i would pour a lil water on them once a day and they all died from root rot. Moist not wet!!

Solid advice, use a mister twice a day.

and remember that you are growing a WEED they are very strong plants and can withstand a lot of beatings. Let the top of the soil look dry and crispy before watering. The mister is a solid way to. I use the spray bottle on my seedlings as well twice a day right as the lights come on and then right before they go off.


A couple good tests to see if your plant needs water.

1.stick your finger in the soil about 2-3 inches if still wet then don't water if dry then water.
2. When your plants needs to be watered right before you do pick up the pot see how heavy it is and kinda remember the weight mentally. Water plant and wait for water to soak in. Pick the pot back up and now see how heavy it is. When the potter is about the same weight as before watering again, then it is time for some more water.

I think the top soil is mostly looking damp because I have a bag over the pot, maybe it's time to remove this?

Also I took the picture in a pitch black room with flash so that probably didn't help.

Also should I put it under light right away?

I was thinking of waiting till the leaves open before I did this.

I'll post another pic when I get home to update on its progress.
