i can't get the image of bush's face out of my head, when he was in front of those school kids when 9/11 happened. he had no idea what to do! he was like a deer frozen in the headlights!!!
I'm not going to defend Bush but I wouldn't have known what the hell to do at that moment either. I know I was in shock!

i think i remember reading that he said he didn't want to scare the children by quickly leaving, or something like that. i'm right there with ya doc! i wouldn't have known what to do either. but he was the prez! he should "know" what to do . i don't mean to sound overly critical of bush, it's no easy job. i can't imagine anyone wanting to be prez.

Come on! He sat and read a book to gradeschool kids when he found out the country was under attack! That's unacceptable by anyones standards. He should have got up as soon as that guy whispered in his ear the situation... I really wonder wtf he was thinking...

You can armchair quarterback all day long. He did what he did and I don't think it was that big a deal. Wrong move? Perhaps but why does everyone make such a big deal of that one thing? Especially when you could pick apart all of the other shit he did wrong.

Put yourself back on that day, Paddy.

When the first airliner hit, it just appeared to be a horrible accident. Then the second one hit and everyone was faced with the reality that we were under attack. Shortly thereafter the Pentagon was hit. Only then did we realize there were other flights we could not account for that morning.

Now assuming Dubya jumped up right then and there and rushed out of there without explanation, what would he have done?

He would have done precisely what he did after story time, which he drew a helluva lot of criticism for anyway. He would have flown around in Air Force One until the situation could be analyzed correctly. The air traffic control network had gone crazy. Planes were unaccounted for all over the country. Most were eventually located in the chaos.

It is only a stroke of luck those brave passengers on Flight 93 got wind via mobile phones the fate of other hijacked airliners. Had those courageous Americans not taken matters in their own hands, Bush might have had to order the Air Force to shoot down a civilian passenger airliner in American airspace. Bush-haters would have had a field day had that happened.

So tell me, what could he have done? The country was under a coordinated and highly unconventional attack. Zealots willing to die hijacked multiple airliners loaded with passengers and fuel. The country was in chaos. No one for sure knew what was happening at that time.

I'm sure Al Gore would have handled things in a much more Presidential manner. :-P

Yes, you're right Johnny....there wasn't any information that the commander-in-chief needed that day that couldn't be found in the goat book. Asking his chief of staff and advisors for more details would have been pointless.

But that's kind of besides the point. I agree that history will judge georgie boy a little bit kinder than most of us who lived through his presidency, but he's still one of the worst in the recent memory. Say what you want about obama, but he still has at least 2 years to go. W had 8 years and frankly the record is anything but impressive...

This type of thing happens with nearly every president. They get second guessed on nearly every decision they make. Coulda, shoulda, woulda.................I personally think he acted prudently given the situation and lack of intel. Bush honestly impressed the fuck out of me immediately after 9/11. He gave some really good speeches including his state of the union address that followed 9/11. That was a historic speech, I don't care what anyone says.:peace:

Armchair quarterback? You've got to be fucking kidding. It doesn't take hindsight to see that you shouldn't sit idle for five minutes in front of schoolchildren when you're the president and the nation is being attacked.

The president should be held to a higher standard. And that's a very strange reaction to have. I think a normal person, not even an exceptional leader, would have simply stood up and left. I can understand people who viewed the plane crashes being shocked, but just being told that the nation is under attack?

Yeah, it's strange how easy it is to criticize people who are constantly making horrible mistakes.

I personally think he acted prudently given the situation and lack of intel.
There was a great deal of intelligence. That lie has been refuted so many times it's ridiculous.

Yes, it was so prudent to invade and occupy a country that had NOTHING to do with 9/11 ??!?!?

And his speeches were moronic "you're with us or against us" that did our country a lot of good didn't it? Or do you prefer that speeches where he flat out lied to the American public in order to justify the invasion or Iraq? The whole "Axis of Evil" thing was laughable too, this is the real world not a fucking Superman comic book.

That's your opinion. I'm not going to argue with you about it. You must have CIA insider knowledge because that's never been proven. :-P

Why you gotta be putting words in my mouth. Where did I say anything about it being prudent to invade Iraq. It always comes back to Iraq with you fucking Bush haters doesn't it? This thread isn't about Iraq. I said his state of the union was a brilliant speech (as were a couple of others immediately after the attacks). That's my opinion. You have yours and I disagree with it but it's all good my friend.

Anyone who believes Bush was a good president or a good person is an idiot. The things he put into place like the patriot act and the doors he opened for further abuses of power are horrifiying. I remember when Americans cared about freedom and a government that served the country not controlled it.

You are referring to the same Patriot Act President Obama reauthorized this year.

And the same Patriot Act which directly resulted in the capture of the Times Square Bomber.

Huh....

LOL!!!!
According to Bush and the Rebulicans he is on the rebound. That is rich.
Bush was a horrible president, he got us involved in a war that ended up killing 100,000 iraqi civilians to date. I am sure they are happy s hell to have Democracy at the end of a gunbarrell. THe patriot act. 9-11 the worst attack on America since Pearl HArbor, while he read The Pet Goat.
Obama is A liar and has sold us to the highest bidder. Mandated healthcare that promises to jail Americans if they don't buy Health insurance. Trillions of dallar of further debt and I am sure much more woe for Americans to come.
Vote third party in 2012. Ron Paul for president

Bush 43 was flawed, no question.

But he's looking more like a fucking Rhodes Scholar every passing day compared the sulking assclown currently occupying the Oval Office.

Uh yes I believe he was refering to that very patriot act. The one that was used for spying and wire tapping on American peace groups and the same one that authorizes wire tapping of all americans. In fact I think it's the same one that classifies those who dabble with illicit drugs as terrorists.
Oh and BTW it was not the patriot act that caught the NYC bomber it was good police work, you know gumshoe detective work. Not the patriot act itself.

When they contacted the girl who sold the vehicle all she had on the buyer was an email address.

The Feds took over from there. And they tracked a few calls to Pakistan in the process.

Good police work, huh?

I never bought the hype that GWB was an idiot. The drawl and the whole I don't read thing was IMHO really just a ruse to endear him to middle america. Cmon the guy went to YAle for Gods sake.

Now Clinton was actually a Rhodes scholar. And not the terrible president thatthe last 2 have turned out to be. My one realdislike of Clinton and it is a deep seated one, almost a loathing was the Waco murders perpetrated by his Attorney General and the ATF. I have never ben able to remove the images of the Burnt body of a 9 year old child with her heels touching the back of her head from the massive spasms that the gas caused.
