Genetics Question

A buddy of mine finished up his recent med grow with two different strains (citral skunk and xx) several weeks ago and while harvesting, he found what he thought to be a male xx that snuck past him. He has several buds with seeds now after harvest and got to thinking...

There's a possibility that the pollen came from a herm plant (quoting him: "I'm not sure dude." then smiled...think he was medicating). Would it still be ok to use the seeds in a future grow? Or does a seed from a herm plant cause a tendency toward hermies in it's future generations? He likes the idea of a citral skunk/xx cross.

Thanks for any help!

man seeds from a hermie are jackpot...ever heard of femenized seeds? guess how they garauntee it, hermie plants are how they make fem seeds. Every seed you got should not only be the same strain but a guarantee female, keep some for yourself and sell some or spread the wealth or whatever, you hit the jackpot buddy. but only if they came from hermie, also if he was growing 2 strains then whatever strain the hermie was if any pollen got on the other strain you have created a new strain of fem seeds id call it citral skunxx, haha congrads.

sorry i meant to say that only if the pollen came from the hermie to other plants, you dont really want the seeds off of the hermie plant, there not too bad, they just carry erm tendencies, throw em in the hillside

You guys are sort of right, but not quite When a plant is a hermie, it is genetically a hermie, likely due to it being stressed at some point in it's life. Those genetics will carry with it forever, and will also be carried over to the seeds it produces, whether from itself or another pure female plant. Feminized seeds, come from applying gibberilic acid to one of a females branches, and it induces male flowers to be produced by that pure female plant. Then that pollen is used to produce feminized seeds. The main difference, is that the mother plant is not genetically damaged like a true hermie, and that 'induced hermie trait' is much less likely to be carried over, if at all. Also, you wouldn't be starting with seeds that are already genetically degraded.

Great care is taken to produce true feminized seeds, and if it was as easy as using hermie pollen, they would be a dime a dozen.

Since one parent is hermie, and the other one isn't, I would say they have a 50% chance. But, I'm not a genetics expert, and I imagine there is some influence depending on hermaphroditism being a recessive or dominant trait, so that percentage is just a rough estimate. You would have to talk to someone more knowledgeable in the genetics, to be able to give you a more accurate number. :)
