Fungas gnats

Just to report back. The yellow strips had even more on them today. A good 20 on each I think.

Potato skins work well. I found these minute black mini-knats (?) in the skins. I didn't check every single one after I saw this. I then put the potato skins straight out of the house and cut up more slices. I worked out that the grater is better than trying to peel them as you have a lot more use and they are finer and bigger.

I'm going to bleach the drains and plugholes..

You can buy cans of the sticky crap and put on trunks. Its called tanglefoot.
I've heard of this stuff in 'The Bible' but have never seen it. I'll look on Ebay. I really want to try it. I was thinking of making my own paste from Vaseline (petroleum jelly) with Neem oil in the meantime. Would it work ?

Thanks for all ur help btw. I have found loads of small black knats on them. I dispose of them out of the house straight away.

My question is : I'm seeing 3 different stages of them from the adults flying and landing on the yellow strips to white lice under the leaves to these tiny black crawling knats. Im confused at which life cycle stage the black tiny knats come from if the lice and already on the leaves?? Plus the lice look bigger than whats on the potato skins? Not sure if that's clear.

i have had good success with a product called 'gognats". its cedar oil. mix a tbl per gal and mist em too. a large oven would be nice. since the eggs come free with the "organic" potting soil. 250 degrees for half hour. of course, this kills the good stuff, but it will be redone when u add tea, or mycortizae. i was allways told they dont do much harm. but even with my stuff, i had a hell of an outbrealk of them this time. also, try mixing two tbl peroxide 3%. in a few gallons water.

+1 for the sticky traps, they also work very well for whitefly.

For me, on top of sticky traps I've always used neem oil, mixed with a small amount of pyrethrum (1/6) and dish soap to dissolve the neem. I spray around base of plants for at least 7 days. Pyrethrum is a great on-contact killer, and neem oil turns the gnats themselves sterile, meaning no more breeding, this works very well if you are highly likely to get the gnats again, for example if your grow area is near a vegetable garden or outside area etc... Once the problem is under control I put a 2" layer of perlite on the top of the pots and reapply the mix about twice week for good measure.

I love the Neem oil and use a weak mix of 0.1-0.2% which is 1-2 ml / litre. The dosage instructions are 0.5% - 5ml /L.
It hasn't been enough so far, even if I increase the mix. Killed the adults but still more lice under leaves. I've got 3 yellows strips around 2 x 600W and each has caught over 20. Potato skins are good too. I think I'll spray the soil with Neem. I also have pyrethrum but it's so strong even at 0.1%.

What mix do you make from ur concentrates (Neem, Pyrethrum)?

Going up to see the girls now. It's boiling outside, thank God for AC and timers coz Im late !!!!

gnats are nature's way of reminding us to let our medium dry out. the gnat life cycle is broken by dry soil.

Some grower only water when they see the plant wilt a bit. U could cover the soil with sand or perlite. The strips are looking full of them in a matter of days and I think I'll add more this week.

They lay eggs on it so u still need to find a way to catch the adults. Make sure you discard the potato skins daily as they hatch fast. Im going to increase the number of yellow strips as they work so well.

Liquid Oxygen which has 17.5% Hydrogen peroxide solution in it give your plants a week flush out with this stuff and they will be gone plus the yellow sticky strips,,,plus i put cotton sheets over the pots so they carnt lay there eggs in the soil,,,just water over the sheets and the water goes though it so you neaver have to take it off,,use an elastic band around the pot to keep it on,,,,
