From 16 CFLs to 450w HPS - start to finish

Ok so I am converting my first thread into my grow journal. Sorry if it seems like parts are missing as I'm just trying to copy and paste from my other thread! Thanks...

I've got quite a few plants and they are all pretty much growing great. There is one plant that is growing a little 'differently' than the rest.

Here is the plant that is just growing differently than the others. Any ideas?

Here are the rest of my plants and my setup, enjoy:

yea that's what I've heard too.

but like you say, I'd hate to kill the ugly duckling just to have it turn out to be my best out of the whole batch. Hopeful thinking I'm sure but that's what it's all about anyways... ;-)

Yea I'm planning on getting an HPS soon for flowering... I've got a 50watt HPS in the top of the cabinet that you can see in the pics. I don't currently use it because it really isn't necessary I don't think for the time being.

I have been wondering exactly how many watts when I go HPS I will need for good penetration to the lower parts of the plants and for sufficient flowering.

Any advice?
That's what I'm talking about!

I'm keeping all of my deformed babies just like the rest of them... As long as I have room for them I'll keep 'em.

I figure when space starts getting slim I'm going to just have to apply Darwin's theory.

Thanks for the advice ironheadxl
I moved my shelf down one position today. So that the plants could be a little further away from the lights. But the problem is that now, my little ones are soooo far away. I've propped them up with some objects to keep them close. Hopefully they'll catch up soon....

I also did a little bit of trimming. And I'm probably just blindly chopping of leaves but I think I went about it right...

I just trimmed off the bottom set of leaves on some of the plants because they had suffered a little bit from something. I figured that since they were I think the first set of leaves that the plants would be plenty healthy to handle it and hopefully it will improve growth!!
Thanks man! I'm proud of them. I love dawning my sunglasses and going in there and making sure everything is working out ok.

I'm going to be purchasing a HPS setup for the flowering stage...

For 2-3 plants in a cabinet grow, how many watts HPS should I go with?

Also I thought it was worth mentioning that if you look in my pics there is a blue humidifier in there. I just recieved it in the mail a few days ago and I'm loving it.

You can set what you would like the humidity to be and it will run constant until it stabilizes. It also has an ionizer in it and a spout that rotates 360 degrees so that you can have the mist aiming wherever you like.

I got it from amazon for only like $56 including shipping.

My question is what humity percetage should I have my grow room at during each phase of growth? I've read somewhere on this site about it but I can't for the life of me seem to find it again. I know it's something like 60-70% during seedling and veg then slowly down to about 20-30% for flowering. Is this about right?

Thanks for any help in advance!
Ok so look at this critter that I found.

I've seen a few of them flying around and the first picture is one that got caught in some of my fly paper.

The second picture is one of them that I caught in the act. Hanging around on one of my pots. Any clue as to why they are?

The next two pics are of one of my babies that I just transplanted. It looks so happy in it's new bigger pot. :)

Yea I just ended up getting rid of like my 5 smallest plants but I kept this one just because it has character.

Thanks for the input.

Will do for sure. Hopefully someone more experienced then me has seen these before and can tell me if they are harmful or now.

Keep checking back and maybe someone will have responded.
Your plants look great trombon! How many CFLs do you have in total? Did you consider adding some around the lower regions of the plant in order to equally light the plant?

I've just heard that HPS lights are ideal for flowering. I'm not really in a situation where I'm not able to have the best so, I'd like to have the best. :)

I've been told that CFLs are more than sufficient but for optimal growth during flowering that HPS lights are the way to go.

600-1000w ?!?! are you serious?? I had no idea that I would need that much. lol I've got a 50w HPS in there now and I was considering earlier on if it would of been sufficient. Guess not.

So I have to get atleast 600w HPS? I was thinking about like 150-250w. Will that not be enough?
See that's just like TONS of lights and wires. I'd like to avoid too much cluster if I could ya know? I know a HPS and reflector is going to take up a lot of room but hopefully it will be worth it.

Yea, I have seen the HPS bulbs at Home Depot but what about ballast and reflector?

I'm actually now thinking that I'm going to grow my current plants, which are bagseed anyways, with just the current CFL setup I have and a 50w HPS that I already have too. I will change out a few of the CFLs to make sure they have the right type of light.

I've got some seeds from a buddy of mine that I plan on using for my next grow so this first grow is more for a learning experience and what not.

Suggestions are always appreciated!! Thanks!
The dimensions for the cabinet that I'm growing in are:

1.5ft x 3ft x 4ft

I'm just going to have to try this round with just the CFLs and the HPS and we'll all see how it turns out. :)
Still no one has seen this fly before???

I'm thinking they are fungus gnats. I'm going to try a few on the methods to get rid of them and see what my results are. Thanks for the link NewGrow60sToker!
10.1 megapixels from Circuit City before they went under for only like $170. It's actually my girlfriends that I got her for Christmas.

Also, I've heard about using slices of raw potatoes and putting them on top of the soil and that the fungus gnat larvae are attracted to it and it helps get them out of the soil. And also putting sane on the top layer of soil because it's so fine that they can't get through it to lay eggs.

All this reading I've done and I still haven't done anything to try and get rid of them. I've done 2-3 sprays with neem oil on them because I found something that I thought was a spider mite when my plants were tiny tiny and I don't want w/e it was to come back.
I went out of town for the weekend and signed up my girlfriend the job of babysitter for my plants. Well, to make short story, she didn't water them until the day I was coming home. lol got to love the trustworthy ones.

I got home and was told that my babies looked a little rough but she wasn't sure why. I thought maybe she'd watered them with the nutes instead of the distilled water. I wasn't sure so I gave all of them lots of water. I came back a few hours later and what do you know? They all perked right back up!

Even the leaves that were a little 'crispy' in certain places came back to life.

I just want to make sure that I'm reading the situation right. I was gone from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon. It also probably was around 20% humidity and 87 degrees too since I wasn't there to mess with the fans and refil the humidifier. I thought that these all too could have added to the plants little problems. Any advice?

Added Mylar FINALLY!

And here's the slow poke that I was originally asking about in this thread:

Also, I finally got a small fan that I could mount in the corner of cabinet:

Here's my best plant. It's super bushy and only 4in. tall:

I'm wanting to start them on 12/12 very soon but I've got to buy some different CFLs and wait for my plants to recover from this weekend...

Any suggestions?
I haven't been really keeping up with the days. I am switching over to 12/12 tonight though. I'm excited.

It sounds like you'll have the right CFLs to do the trick.

I'm planning on using some down the sides of the inside of the cabinet so that the lower portions of the plants can get more light. Hopefully they'll like it.

This grow is basically a learning experience for me. These plants are from bagseed and are for trial and error.

My next grow is also bagseed but the weed that was in the bag was absolutely brilliant. I hope I can grow something half as good. :)

Good luck man!

Well I figured that it's time to give you all an update!

Things are going better than I had expected. All of the plants are doing great and have been in 12/12 for approx. 1-2 weeks now.

Here is the slow poke that I started the thread about. It just is dense as hell. I actually put this one back under 24hr lighting until it gets a little bigger. I have high hopes for this one:

Now this is the busiest plant that I have. I've tied it down trying to maximize light penetration.

This one you can see where I've tied down the three branches hoping to promote more tops:

This is the tallest one that I have. Before I tied it down it was about 16" tall:

And the last one in the bigger pots, also tied down:

And here are the two twins. I haven't started to tie them down yet...

And here's the whole family!!!

the last picture is of them at home where they belong:

P.S. I've probably gone WAY overboard but I bought a new toy on eBay today!!

Is this going to be overkill in my little grow room I have setup?

I've got 36" wide x 18" deep x 48" tall. Here's how big it is:

That shouldn't be too small should it? I currently have two fans built into the box. One fan pushing air out and the other towards the bottom pulling air inside.

Here's what the fan's look like. One is about twice the size the other one is though:

And I tried to take a picture of the fans but the lights are too bright. But the top left one is the big fan blowing out and the bottom right in the smaller one pulling in fresh air:

"In order for the heat produced by a light system not to harm the plant, a 250 watt light system should be started 18 to 30 inches above the tops of the plants, a 400 watt light system should be started 3 to 4 feet above the tops of the plants,
A 600 watt light system should be started 4 to 5 feet above the tops of the plants, a 1000 watt light system should be started 5 to 6 feet above the tops of the plants."

I found that here: https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journals/107903-k1ng5p4d3s-cardboard-box-grow-hehe-4.html

ACK! Looks like I need to change my order to a 250 watt instead. :(
grrr I wrote and called HTG Supply and they still shipped the 400w light... Can I use a 250watt bulb in it to try and help with the heat and then maybe in the future upgrade to the 400 watter.

Suggestions?
Weeeeeee. Well I woke up this morning and went to go check on my babies and guess what? The biggest bushiest one I have, show her sweet little female parts today!!!!!

On the other hand I had 3 turn out to be males too but they were actually the scraggly one.

I am reading their sex correctly aren't I? :)

Damn, I think I resized them too small.... If the pics are too small someone just speak up and I'll redo them.

Thanks
Guess what?? TWO MORE FEMALES!!!!:hump:

So far that's 3 males, 3 females, and one unknown.

I'm happy with just 3 females too. I was worried about what I would do if I had too many females for my cabinet.

I'm looking forward to seeing the buds starting to form!!:weed:
Still no answer so I'll post the question again.

I have a 400watt HPS system that is going to be arriving tomorrow in the mail. I'm wondering if I can switch out the 400w bulb with a 250 watt bulb and not suffer any problems.

Anyone? Thanks!!
Couldn't see the image but thanks for the info! Ever since I put the 400w HPS in there I have been keeping the cabinet doors open to keep the heat down and that's also helped with the flies.

Guess what?!? The odd one turned out to be...... a....... FEMALE!!!!!!! WOOOHOOO!@#$

Anyways, I'm excited. I can't wait to see what the buds that this things produces is going to look like. It's probably going to be on big fat nugget. I can hope atleast. lol

And, I have a question. I know it was mentioned that maybe me having a 400w HPS in a small cabinet would cause 'bleaching'.

Is that what this is:

Thanks for all of the replies and help everyone. Really if it wasn't for this forum I wouldn't have even come close to making it this far.

This has somewhat turned into a grow journal but, oh well. :)
Yea, I realized that and got rid of the clear plastic pots. Thanks!
Look at how great they are coming along!

Those pictures are gigantic man! I have a 20" monitor and they are too huge for me to see everything. I think if you made the pics smaller you could see more in one glance... I feel like they are overpowering me haha. Everything is looking great, keep up the good work

Yea I uploaded them on accident before I resized them. They are all better now. :) sorry about that and thanks for the compliments...

Ahhh that is so refreshing on the eyes haha. Def looks much better smaller :hump: So are you just using computer fans to cool your cab?

danke

Active Member
nope. I have a wind tunnel fan aiming up at the HPS light to try and keep the heat off the plants. And then I also leave the cab doors cracked some. I installed a window AC unit into the room the cab is in and have it set on "Mid Cool" w/e that means. But it keeps the temps perfect somehow. :)

Here's a pic:

I'm bored as hell so I figured I'd take a picture of this pot that I am smoking right now...

It's $30/gram. Not 1/8's or 1/4's or 1/2's. Nothing but grams, $30 at a time. BUT it is gorgeous and taste and smells absolutely delicious.

Here it is, check it out:

And, any and everyone feel free to post comments and suggestions as much as you like. I'm still a first time grower and will take all the advice I can get! thanks for reading!

I hope that you are shutting that door at lights off. The plants need 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness or else you are just asking for hermies

well there is no other light in the whole room... I have all the windows blocked off. soo all is good. :)

Also, i just bought some seeds!!

Nirvana Seeds Ice

Ice has ancestors of Afghani, a very special Skunk, Northern Light, and Shiva. An intense selection process of thousands of plants was used in finding this special mix.
Ice flowers are richly covered in trychomes and have a dense consistency. Buds form along main branches and there is a high flower to leaf ratio. Fastastic for hydro and soil applications. The stone is heavy and the aroma is almost like fuel. Ice is a winner of the 1998 Cannabis Cup.

Ok, I've got a question...

I've noticed that some of the tips of my hairs are turning brownish/red.

I was hoping that I had a lot more growth in my plants seeing as they are only on day 27 of 12/12.

o_O

advice?

My first clone attempt ever. I just cut it off (on accident) trying to cut off a dead leaf and so I dipped it in root-tone and stuck it in the dirt. Gave it water just like I do with the others and bam. Healthy little plant ready for flowering!! Very easy.

The whole 450w cab setup

AND note to self: keep a written journal in the grow room next time for things like pH balancing and watering. Hard to remember which plant you did what to. lol :joint:
