Flowering times outdoors question?

Hi all

Im growing a burmese kush (fem) as well as some bag seed for fun. they are outdoors in pots. the burmese is in a smart pot in coco using lucas formula (floranova bloom) bag seed in organic potting mix.

anyways currently the day length is 13.5 hrs, they have been growing for approximately 1-1.5 months and are about 1ft tall.

My question is when will they start to flower? I obviously know that 12/12 is the standard light regimine to induce flowering and i have not seen any signs of pre flowers yet. The reason i ask is because i have heard people say that plants can flower when they reach a certain stage of "maturity". Is this also true?

The light cycle is due to change to 12/12 around mid march, do i just have to wait it out till then? I would just like to try and get a ball park of when i might expect to harvest.

I have found that seedlings grown outside will show the males within 6 weeks(after sprouting). After that you'll see the females. As long as you can get 6-8 weeks of 12/12 everything should be ok. Under a 1kw hps 12/12 I have time to get a sip for a clone from a seedling put in as soon as the single adult leaves start to grow. A freshly rooted clone from a seasoned mother will go into bud right away in the same 12/12.

thanks for the reply! so are u saying that i will have to wait till march for the cycle to naturally change to 12/12? will plants show sex if its not exactly 12/12?

Mj plants(most) will start showing if the light goes below 18L/6d. I don't know the climate where you are living but the light factors sound good for mj. To further this, 24L/0d will not show sex.

Everything I have read, say that MJ in most cases will begin to flower when the day length get shorter then 13hrs (why we do 12/12 indoors to make sure to tricker the flowering hormones)


just give em time, make sure they get +5 hrs of direct sun a day 8 hrs is better

ok cool so hopefully they show sex soon. once they do show 1st signs should i start the flowering countdown from then? buku is apparently 7-8 week although i doubt thet will happen for me. also fingers crossed i don't get a hermi (hear some bad reviews)

Once your plants reach an age where mature enough to flower they will show pre-sex signs during veg growth. If you look at the "crotch" of your newer shoots you will see pre flower pistils showing... Outdoor plants will start to flower in even if you only have 10.5-11 hours darkness. They typically don't need 12/12 outdoors to start flowering... Where im from my earliest flowering plants start flowering with 13.5 hours of daylight and 10.5 hours darkness. If your plant is only roughly a month old from seed it may not have reached maturity yet but should be close

The obvious question here is are you in the southern or northern hemisphere? Degrees latitude north or south?

He's obviously in southern hemisphere if his days are getting shorter

just wondering, do your plants take longer to finish due to this?

No it doesn't take them any longer... Once they start flowering the countdown is on. Another sign your plant is starting to flower is your branches will stretch... This stretch phase is your first 2 weeks of flowering.

7-8 weeks is just roughly and a guide line, depend on a lot of factors, you more need to learn to see when they are "done" and to your liking, harvest windows can easily stretch for two weeks, you could compare it with tomatoes if you like, first it set its fruits all over, then they grow but is still green, then they begin to get color to em and is ready to eat, but still early, then its a matter of taste, do you like em dark red and fully mature or some where in between ? MJ also have a few stages, more like 3-4 first you will see a stretch (a wast grow) then it will set pistils all over (white hairs) then you see the calyx swell and then it will mature, so to speak

I vegged indoor for two months so I was dealing with mature plants but I put my plants out on my patio in Oct. right before we changed our clocks back so pretty much right into 12/12 and they went into flowering right away. I did notice they took a little longer to finish up than when I grew this strain indoor....Also the buds were bigger but a little fluffier, not as dense. I was only getting direct sunlight on these ladies from 10:30 am to 3pm....the resin production increased in the sun as well. Still curing up but will see how these ladies compare to their sisters who were grown in my closet under 400w HPS...

It's also strain dependant, I'm growing 4 strains, tangerine kush, rugburn, dinachem, and some bagseed.
the dinachem, and rugburn started preflower end of December and the tangie and bagseed are just now starting
to preflower at middle of January. So it's dependant on a lot of variables.

Outdoor plants use the summer solstice to commence flowering, the days going from ever increasing light hrs, to decreasing light hours. I also believe dropping temps and changing light spectrums as summer progresses toward fall is another trigger, forget this 12/12 stuff, plants don't need 12hrs of light(or dark depending on who you ask) to flower, the switch is merely convenvient with the use of a timer.

btw usually 2-3 weeks after solstice my plants will be sexing out

June 21, The solstice(the longest day of the year here)

Sunrise: 5:19am
Sunset: 7:41pm
so what is that 14h 22min I believe. Tell me where on earth they get consistent days over 18 hrs, the artic circle? please stay in the indoor area where your knowledge is somewhat relevant. Ive started plants inside under 15, 16 hrs so Im not far off from the outdoor cycle, with no flowering issue. Its not as cut and dry as below 18 and will flower, above 12 wont flower, you need to really need to examine what the plants cues are to trigger its flowering hormones

but we are outdoors eh? Lol
summer solstice is the key, anytime after that day is when our gals
get amorous and show their stuff. 12/12 is indoor talk, dec 21 is dimmer solstice in Southern Hemisphere.
and your flowering can be anywhere from 6-12 weeks strain dependent.
