First time with soil -- deficiency?

Hello,

I decided to give soil a go this time. I'm using FoxFarm ocean forest as my soil. I transplanted some clones into it once they rooted. I'm noticing the two I've transplanted are starting to get some discoloration.

I've not added any nutes to the soil, just some Liquid Karma and a little Hygrozyme mixed into some distilled water.

I'm used to growing with AeroPonics and soil is a bit different and I'm looking for some help identifying what these plants are lacking or are getting too much of.

Any assistance is appreciated. You get a little banding with the lights on but these colors are true-to-life otherwise.

If it was a brand new bag of FFOF, and the clones were young, it's probably a nute burn...I've had problems with this in the past. FFOF is a "hot" soil with lots of bio activity. As it sits in the bag at the grow store (stacked and wrapped in plastic) it creates a hot humid environment perfect for living soil conditions.it keeps building nutrients from decomposition and can be a hit or miss growing medium. I wouldn't add any nutes and try and find a buffer or soil rinse. Or water as heavy as they can handle to flush some of the unwanted or unneeded nutes. What size are your pots?

islandstyle, thanks for the input! That is helpful information. I'm using 3 gallon pots. They are a soft material (Smart pot) that allows aeration and water to drain.

It looks less like transplant shock at this point and more like nute burn. Although the leaves are pretty light, not a lot of dark green coloration.

islandstyle, would your suggestion be to flush (pour lots of distilled water) through the pots? If so, how much?

Haha. Thank you for your very passionate story rob333. Perhaps this soil was not an ideal choice for this plant type.

I got some pretty nasty mold overgrowth in my hydroponics system right as I was about to transplant the clones. I already had foxfarm for other gardening I do, so it (trying a soil grow) seemed like an easy way to avoid dealing with the hassles of cleanup and extensive sterilization of the hydroponics system at the time. I guess my options are fairly limited at this point, I imagine people don't attempt to change out all of the soil, weeks into a grow.

Absolutely! I use 3 gal smart pots to transplant my clones for the veg. Stage. They work great for building a really strong root system. I usually flush for a nute burn 3x the pot size. So 9 gal. Would do it. Elevate your pot on a milk crate where you don't mind the ground getting soaked and flush em. Sp's are perfect for a first time grow because there drainage allows you to do this if needed.

The distilled water is messing you up. You have to add calmag to distilled or reverse osmosis water. That and over watering is a killer. People will say you cant over water smart pots but if your getting mold then you must be. Pick up the bag and see how heavy it is and let it dry out then check again and see how heavy it is. Once you know how heavy it is dry then you know when to add water. Your soil should be prebuffered already but you still have to ph adjust your water/nutrient solution that your feeding it.

Fox Farm alone is a fools errand, add 30-50% perlite to avoid any further burn, and (Mg) deficiency is yellow leaf veins not green..?

But first to my blog: for a flush https://www.rollitup.org/Journal/Entry/flush-baby-flush.27513/

I would give them a week or so to get use to their new homes before taking any drastic measures.
