First time grower help.

@wyteberrywidow thanks for the help, Once i get money I am going to be ordering that 150w HPS, or possibly even a 200-400w hps. The hps is only for flowering though, I am going to use 6 100w equivalent CFL bulbs for vegetation. Ill be sure to keep posted, once i start growing I will make a new thread but i will paste it on this one.
 
Yeah glad i can help.Dont get me wrong you can do both veg and flower with just the 150 hps.If you want add the cfls with the hps for the first grow then later on build a little box so you can veg with the cfls.
 
So you dont think that cfls would work in a bigger size closet, btw its all white paint except the door should i do something to the inside door?
I was just going to put the cfls very close to the plant, as close as it will go without burning it.
 
yeahh cover everything!

cfl's are good for one type of grow, for small grow spaces that have no way of extracting heat. Otherwise hps is always going to outperform them.

Actually using a 400 hps with maybe a few cfls a plant for side lighting is better then just a 400 hps with no side lighting. And its pretty easy to get the cfls close to the plants, usually 2-3 inches depending on cfl watt size.
 
If dual spectrum you wont need those cfl's at all, not if the lights are able to be close enough with the mentioned heat situation.

If you already have all the cfl bulbs and have spent money then I would stick to them as oppose to anything under a 400w. When you are ready/able step up the game then goto the 400-600w hps range.
 
@3lions Since this is my first grow i am going to try and pickup 6 42w cfl bulbs, and i have those y connnectors, etc. I heard CFLs are better then hps for vegging anyways, and by the time its flowering the 150w bulb should be coming in, and im going to use 4 2700k bulbs + the 150w hps, and maybe for my second grow i'll order some better lights online or something.
 
Just double check all yer prices. be patient, hey u need to learn patience anyway if you dont have a lot of it lol

6 cfl's, connectors, low wattage hps, does add up and even with 150w maybe u still need a ballast, im not sure and you will want to upgrade, its inevitable. A lot depends on your available space ongoing.

It is always possible to pick up second hand set up from people going from say 250 to 600 set up etc. Get a 250w hood and ballast set together for cheap im sure. Then just throw in a new dual spectrum bulb which are cheap as chips.

whichever way you do it im sure you will get plenty of support here. I used to be involved with another site so didnt post here but always used it for reference still. Some really knowledgeable folks.
 
Well I've been doing a lot of research lately and for my first grow i'm going to try and grow with all cfls, hopefully as the plant is vegging i will be able to get my hands on a 250w+ Hps light.
@3lions And yeah I am a little impatient, me and my girlfriend are super excited to grow, and we have everything except the seeds and lights, and maybe a few other things.
 
ooh, no seeds yet? well if you ever fancy trying some of the top Spanish seeds drop us a line ;-)

It is exciting man, they say smoking isn't addictive but growing is ;-)
 
Just buy a HPS on craigs list, ebay or htg. Then go buy yourself a 400 watt ceramic metal halide bulb and you won't have to change out the bulb, it will give you a full spectrum.

@twistedwords I am going to look up prices, i would have to use a vanilla mastercard if anyone knows what that is so i dont really have much money to spend like less then 100 dollars.
 
UPDATE:
I am going to use the inside of a dresser for a growspot instead of the huge closet, so now the dresser is in the closet, but it doesnt have white paint or anything on the inside, its just wood, not sure if i should paint it white, or buy some mylar and tape it all on the inside.

Why would you do that.Use the inside of the dresser to veg/clone and the other for your flower cab.
 
Its kind of a big dresser tbh, i think that my plants will be able to flower in them, i dont plan on growing them too big before harvest.
 
Heat is going to be a big problem for you as well as smell. You need to vent that bad boy through a carbon filter and you're good to go.
 
Yeah heat is going to be a problem it is already 90 degrees in that closet thats with no lighting at all or ventilation.
