Trump has somehow earned the vote of the religious right. They see the pope as speaking directly from god, and essentially infallible. He wants his followers to make the same connection, and see him as giving orders directly from god, so they continue to follow along in blind faith, as he gets more and more bat shit crazy from dementia and his lust for power.
 
Authoritarianism has to constantly project depictions of “strength”, and keep the rubes in a state of fear, or they might actually see how weak and full of shit the leaders are, behind the facade. “Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain” - comes to mind.
