Ethical Dilemma

OK so there's always conversations about population control and how we're exhausting the Earth's resources too fast. If a parent of a minor chooses, do you think they should be allowed to have their children sterilized?

Wouldn't it make more sense to have themselves sterilized?
After all, making the decision for a generation after one's own is the very pinnacle of passing the buck.
And fwiw it's a moral dilemma. cncn

I think sterilization should be an individual's choice.

But I agree that our species has managed to overpopulate the planet. I am sure that if any other species was doing to our planet that we are, we would be hunting it down and erasing it.

Erm...ethical means pertaining to morals but I apologize if I misphrased. So let's say the parents already are sterilized themselves. Would that change things?

The people that dont want kids arent having any... There is enough condoms and birthcontrol in this world to make sure of it. The ones that want kids are gonna keep having them. Its like chasing your tail, your just goin in circles.

I don't think it would be ethical at all. It's one thing to spay your dog, because you can't really ask the dog to go spay itself, or how it feels about it (I think the answer is obvious there anyway).
This is not to say that I haven't been angry at some perceived douchebaggery or another and wished that I could sterilize the offender by kicking him super hard, right square in the turkish taffy yam satchel, but to date I've always gotten over whatever slight that caused me to feel that way before actually kicking the aforementioned satchel.

If you think the planet is in such terrible shape and doomed to become horribly overpopulated to a point where you can actually believe that the forced sterilization of children, with the decision being made by their parents, is conceivable, than maybe you should just step off the planet and make a little more room for someone else who might make better use of the space.

True. I have a friend that has a unique situation. She was raped at 14 years old, and ended up pregnant. The guy who committed the rape (who is in prison for it right now) put GHB in her drink at a friend's birthday party. She was a virgin, and not knowing what happened, had no reason to think she was pregnant. She was 5 months along, still getting her periods, and not showing when the baby started kicking and she found out she was pregnant. By then it was too late to have an abortion. So she had the baby. She has her own tubes tied now. Does she have the right to sterilize her son, if for no other reason than not wanting to continue the genes of a rapist? Or would that be morally wrong, and he should be allowed to choose for himself?

Maybe I'm being a curmudgeon, but the synonymy of "ethical" with "moral" is new, and I don't like it. Today's definition #2 used to be the main one:
2:
being in accordance with the rules or standards for right conduct or practice, especially the standards of a profession: It was not considered ethical for physicians to advertise.

I didn't say all that. I was just having this conversation with a few friends and wanted to hear some more opinions. I hear a lot of people say things like rapists should be forcefully sterilized, felons, etc. I didn't mean to get all "but what about the children?!!" I'm just asking people's opinions is all.

But for the record the whole "I don't agree with you, you should just go die" thing is really not helpful in a discussion.

You know what the problem is. I really mean this.

It is fucking us. Our greed. Our racism and prejudice. Our "I come first mentality."

If we do not come together, and work together as a fucking SPECIES we are done for. I mean that. The earth, at least for now, is able to produce enough for everyone. You know what stops everyone from eating a decent meal? Power. When you control what is needed, you have power. We, as Americans (yes, I know it's hard to swallow, pun not intended) waste so much. It is simply our luxury, we feel we have earned so why the fuck give it up? (I mean our lifestyle). Your ability to walk down the street and snag a burger, fries, and soda for like 4 bucks is something that just is natural to you. It is unheard of in most places of the world.

And the energy and resources to make it so easy for you is staggering. So much simply to make things convenient for you, more energy and resources than a typical African village will see in a year just to run one mcdonalds that throws away so much unbought food it is sickening. (If you can call it food, lol)

There is no simple solution. Either we change, come across an incredible form of energy than can sustain all... or we die burdened by our own gluttony. Crushed to death by our own inability to come together as a SPECIES.

i don't really care. ive never wanted children so i don't worry abotu these things or the future of the planet. selfish possibly but at the same time, it's selfish to WANT kids. everyone wants too much, i dont' want for much of anything.

only in poor countrys does the birthrate exceed the deathrate. that is due to poor education. so the only way to curb population growth is through education

I forgot to mention my regular spheel, if the world is so shitty that we have to consider sterliization, WHY do people continue to pop out more and more people?

it's NOT that bad! that's why. this whole hypothetical sterilization concept is absolutely ridiculous.

or maybe it is that bad but people's WANT to have children trumps the reality of the future sucking.

I could be wrong, but I always figured that the main reason why people have so many babies is because sex is so fun and shit just happens due to this.
