Here ya go @RainDan ,my buddy finally built his fixture with that 4 cob kit i picked up a few weeks ago.came out pretty nice for a first timer imo.he said its got about 8 bucks worth of sheetmetal and a few rubber grommets from the hardware store. Fuckerz bright as hell with the 1400 mw driver ,i think he's going to get another one and make a big square frame next time.peace

Dude that's awesome!!!! I swear everyone's build looks stronger than mine. Your buddy should make a deal with timber. He trades the frame for lights.

Does look good. The potentiometer could be a little lower and on a smaller cut of metal. Also, the driver should only be on a piece of metal about 1/4" high. Thatd make it perfect imom

Lol don't feel bad I made one with a metal scrog screen and zip ties in a pinch. It's since been built but that's almost the beauty of the cobs.

Anyone complaining about its appearance should stare at a 50w cob while you plug it in.

Hey guys, would you say the 300 watt kit by timber (here is the link: http://timbergrowlights.com/300-watt-cree-cxb3590-6-cob-kit-meanwell-hlg-power-supply-free-shipping/) would:

1. Cover a 3x6 area better than two viparspectra par 600 lights (here is the link to my existing lights: https://www.amazon.com/VIPARSPECTRA-PAR600-600W-12-band-Light/dp/B01H72RD3K)? I'm not looking for optimum yield scenarios, I'm looking for a kit to get started with that I can grow into.

2. Be scalable in that I could add on an additional two (maybe more) lights later down the line to fully utilize the 4x8 space I have available?

That is a great design. Looks like it's 36-40" long?

I like the metal working - simple and intelligently designed. Did your buddy do all the bending and forming himself? Nice finished product for only $8 worth of material!

100% your best investment is in timber grow lights.

The 2 viper 600 are a combined 550 watts at 20% efficient
Timber 6 cob kit is 300 watts of 56% efficient.

So you're gettin a lot more with timber an they'll last 7 years at least. The China epiled vipar I'm pretty sure is a renamed company that's had lots of LEDs die in a year or less.

I wouldn't invest in vipar

Yeah, thanks for the breakdown. I spoke to someone in chat on their website, super helpful. It seems like the right route for me to go for sure. I'd need to go with 3x 200 or 2x300 kits to cover the amount of space I'm looking to properly cover. 2x300 in two arrays of 6 is what he recommended, which would rock.

Yeah that would be nice and you'd have well made lasting lights.

18" spacing on the cobs.yeah he did all the bends on a 4 foot brake,thats why theres a seam in the center of it.i think its just over 5 feet long.he has a 7 x 5 room with just a cali lightworks panel in there now on a mover.this bar is gunna make a huge difference lol.

Though I have no desire to buy chinese lights, has anyone really tested them, or are people just quoting someone else's opinion of there efficiency? 20% seems awfully low even for epi chips. any facts available?

I put together my 200w 4 3590 cob kits. The color coding on the wiring makes these kits close to idiot-proof.
2 48" aluminum angles 3/4 1/16" per kit, cut to 2-40" and 4-4" pet kit. punch, rivet gun, 1/4" drill bit, straps to hang and some eye bolts brought the finished lights in @ $420.each.
I was going to hang from the ends but they will not stay pointed down (top heavy) with a single attach point. I have gotten to like the straps that I got because I can point the light to the side and it stays.

I would buy again if I needed more light.
At full blast you can hold your hand on the heat sinks. They are warm but not hot. I run them at about 70% and the center of the heat sinks are a little warm and don't need to turn up my exhaust fan which is just running on it's slowest setting. Can't hear a thing with the door closed.

Timber makes the type of pre-fab grow lights that I love. They are built like tanks.... but these kits -especially now with the Osram options, are kicking ass like nobody else! One of the nicest things about Timber is that those guys are constantly finding and trying out new ideas in their "mad scientist" laboratory. I can't wait to see what they'll come up with next! :)
