No the ballast should not get hotter when dimmed. It proly seems that way but its not.
My opinion again: just use chains to raise and lower your hood, that gives you more of the dimming feature anyways. (25% all the way to 100%) ex. 5 foot away is proly 25% of the light and 12" away is proly 100% of useable light. GOOD LUCK imanoob!

Fore anybody thats intrested;

LUMATEK™ LK6240 ELECTRONIC BALLAST 600W 240V - DIMMABLE
More lumens generated per watt of electricity consumed - Lumatek™ ballasts have increased efficiency over magnetic ballasts. They lose fewer watts from the power supply to the lamp. This is a power factor of 95%+. The high frequency output results in low power loss
Fast start-up - they reach full brightness quickly
Completely silent
Small compact design
Produce less heat
Cut-off circuitry - cut off when a short is detected. For ultimate safety
Fully interchangeable - Lumatek™ ballasts can light both HPS and MH bulbs (excluding the 750W which is HPS only)
NEW - A dimming knob has been added which will allow them to be set at 50/75/100% (only reduce the amount of light not the power usage).
$199.96

I would much rather this ballast...no fan means the heatsink must work as it should.
Just need to find somewhere that sells this in the uk...or ships here. Anybody?
Sorry I cant help you with were to find one in the UK. But I can tell you the lumatek ballasts rock! It what I use and I love them. You are right, the heat sink works well. Very reliable. Good luck in your quest to find one.

Yeah, I think your right man. I just liked the way I could reduce the temp in summer etc...guess by the time next summer comes I can buy an AC haha!

PLUS i will have a better quality ballast...nothing going to break on me!

Hey Cowboylogic, which Lumatek ballast do you have? I was going to go from another type, but they do get great reviews from the RIU members.

The Lumatek 1000w with dimmer works great for me. Much more powerful than any ballast i've seen. Combined with Hortilux bulb it's like being in heaven.:blsmoke:
