I am a first time grower and I cant get my seeds to germinate for shit! I have wasted almost all my seeds because I cant get them to germinate. The only seeds I have left are the mixed seed freebie bag from nirvana seeds. I need someone to tell me what I'm doing wrong. I am putting them in between afew moist paper towels in a warm dark place. When the taproot starts to show I put them in a dixie cup full of soil and perlite, and poke holes in the bottom for drainage. I then place them under a 400w MH light about 2 1/2 feet away. I make sure the soil stays moist but not saturated. But for the life of me I cant get any of the seeds to grow and emerge from the soil. Plllzzz can someone tell me what I am doing wrong so I dont waist any more of my seeds.

sounds like your doing the right stuuf try maybe waiting tell you get a longer root growing before planting ive let them get an inch long other thing the root comes out ofthe seed so plant it down

Here's what I do. I water the soil in the cup well and let it drain. Then I plant the seed taproot down under like 1/4" of soil. Then I cover the cup with saran wrap tied on with a rubber band. The saran wrap creates like a humidity dome and eliminates the need for watering. I take it off as I see the seedling pop out.

Hey man, what type of soil are you using? I recommend ff happy frog. Put them in the wet towel, put on a plate, cover it with seran wrap, keep it between 70-80, wait till you see the taproot start to emerge, maybe a little less than 1/8 in, put ff happy frog in dixie cup w holes in bottom, create a small hole 1/4 in deep, drop it in and lightly set loosely packed soil over. Water lightly once planted & keep light on 18/6 light cycle. Make sure temp stays in range, keep moist but not saturated. you can cover w seran wrap with small holes for air if youre having a hard time keeping soil moist but remove it as plant gets larger

Uhhh. ok then. HMMMM seedlings in dixie cups (what size? no pics), under 400w of hid....uh ya I think that just could be the problem.

Sorry don't mean to be a smart ass just havin some fun. Anyway that is very likely the issue. Get a cfl or 2 6400k and put that about 2" above your seedlings until they have root systems. No Worries.

THanks bro, I went out and got me a cfl. I will try that and see if it gets my seeds to germinate! Thanks again!

soak seeds in a weak kelp solution, in a pill bottle. when, in a day or two, the seeds sink.....plant them in 2' pots with peat. keep damp, not moist. i am a soil grower, i mean my cousin is, and this is geared to soil.

I agree completely with budz,I did manage to germ with a 400watt mh but the light was more like 5 to 6 feet above the buckets

Yeah I've ended up wasting quite a bit of money on seeds trying to germinate under it. Hoping this CFL light will work. I was wondering, how many seeds do you think i could germinate under it?

one or 2 per customer max. I only say that because after they germ I plant them directly into 4" pots. Don't ever put 2 seedlings in the same pot. So if you have seedlings close to the edge of their own pot, 2 can go under 1 cfl. The whole idea is to max the light as much as possible. You want to be able to keep the cfl very close almost touching. About 2" is good. So they don't stretch to reach.

What soil are you using?

Ok good to know. I am using some shit MG soil at the moment. I have some compost soil that I bought from a local grow store near my house, but I was going to use that after I transplant them into there final pot's.

I would like to make a suggestion that will possibly get me harrassed by someone who may disagree. BUT, I would stay with the MG soil. Which one is it and have you amended it at all? IMHO MG potting soil, MG perlite and sphagnum with a 3:1:1 ratio is a great way to go for a first grow, Just to get your feet wet and be able to say you have smoked budz you grew! Now, that is the best buzz bar NONE!

You can always add too or tweak your next grows but there is time for that. The M.G. again IMHO is great for a 1st timmer. It can really make you do your homework figuring out what some small deficiencies look like. But as long as you stay critter and disease free, and learn how to water MG properly which is the key to using it successfully. You should be able to get a fairly decent first harvest.

I myself am doing kind of an experimental MG grow under a very cheap light set up just because I wanted too see if MG was really as awful as some claim. Well if you get the chance click the journal link in my signature and take a look. Best of Luck...and post some PICS! We love PICS!!!

I started with MG too. I used it for a long time and never really saw any difference when using other soils. I use 100% perlite now, but if I ever go back ill use MG again because if it aint broke...

Well right now I am germinating under the CFL. But when they are good I'm transplanting them to a 3 gallon pot's. The light I will be using is a 400w MH for veg and a 600w HPS for flowering.

Yeah I was kind of thinking about doing that myself. Just for this first time atleast.

i had some issue on my current grow with MG soil/perilite and sfghum. not arguing that its shit soil just saying it can be difficult on a first time growe like myself.

my next grow i will be using pro mix, homeade worm castings, happy frog nutrients and organic perilite. In my personal opinion, organics seem to be the easiest way but i dont really have any evidence to back that up. from what i have read it seems pretty good for first time growers as its almost impossible to burn plants.

i will add 1 more thing, if you go with the miracle grow, do yourself a favor and have the H tested, it may be fine and if it is then you dont have to concern yourself with the PH for the rest of the grow. if there is a PH issue its better to get it taken care of before you start growing then have to deal with it while your plants have developed a root system in the soil. you want a PH of 6.8 for soil if im not mistaken but 6.6-7.0 is alright. a perfect ph (6.8 will ensure you plants are able to uptake all nutrients that are made available in the soil, with a PH that is off you will get lock outs.

also read up on how to water using MG soils and products as they can release alot of nutrients when you water and potentially burn smaller plants especially seedling.

good luck on your first grow man, hope all works out well for you. if you wantt to check out my journal i used MG products and i dont want you to check it out to scare you away from them but to help you understand thier potential to harm your plants, when used properly they are great products so maybe you can learn from my mistakes.

:peace:
