Defoliation at day 1 of flower

Hey all, I have been reading about defoliation on day 1 of flower as well as day 21 of flowering. Has anyone tried this and noticed positive results? I just flipped to flower yesterday. Wondering about giving this a try. How much did you remove? I am reading all major fan leaves ? Here's a shot of where I was at last night. Thanks for any advice in advanced !20220320_194129.jpg

Personally I don’t “schwazz” which is what you’re referring to.

defoliation Around here is a hot topic and quickly ends up getting threads closed if they get out of hand.

I’m not much of a defoliator but I do selectively trim and prune my plants either to thin them out or to train them in a specific way such as topping etc.

what you’re referring to above is the technique known as schwazzing.

I have never performed this but the idea is that you remove every large leaf (with its own petiole) on day 1 of 12/12.

then repeat at day 21 of 12/12.

——————————

There are those here that prefer leaves on Plants so that photosynthesis takes place.

after all photosynthesis is what powers a plants ability to grow.

It can get quite heated quite quickly in threads such as this.

So be warned. lol.

this is what I will show you.

this is my 2 plants at approx day 3 of 12/12. 11th March. I have selectively trimmed and pruned the plant and trained it into the scrog. Any growth below the screen has been removed.

this is the same plants yesterday.

So there is definitely a lot of growth that continues to happen “veg wise” after you hit the switch to 12/12.

I’m sure some schwazzers will be in soon and so will the leaves photosynthesise and power the plant.

you can see where my thought process lies although I will be thinning out the plants over the next few days to allow better airflow amongst the canopy and selectively remove bottom “larf”.

Your plants don't have enough leaves to justify removing any.

Schazzers eh, haven't heard of that one lol, I've always just cut off the lower crap and picked leaves when they were yellow. Your plants are looking awesome! Thanks for the info

People have been defoliating for years. Some dude-bro came out with a book he wanted $700 for or something ridiculous like that. He coined it Schwazzing. I guess it started to gain ground recently? When the book came out he was pretty heavily mocked for his rebranding of defoliating.

There's a grower on here who's passed but he was aggressively defoliating plants a decade ago. He had great results that spoke for themselves.

Defoliating on Day 21 of 12/12
I didn't strip off all the fans, but 2 nodes down from every top, i took the fans.
Kept on any fan that was not truly blocking light. So mabey 70% I took off.

This is present day (47 days), And I feel like I should have taken more.

The only way to know is by personal Trial & Error. The process of removing all large/medium fan leaves at flip to 12/12 is largely debatable.

I personally only pluck and prune fan leaves & small nodes below the lower quarter portion of the plants canopy, then remove only any large fan leaves directly blocking tops. Smoke a J, play some tunes and go through carefully removing any shading leaves, overlapping leaves..

The real goal of it is getting complete light exposure to all bud sites with this method so other forms of training is recommended such as SCROG and topping.

The reason I clear the lower quarter of the plant is I want my lower oscillating wall fans to be blowing fresh air through there not only to deter flying insects but keep good airflow throughout the canopy.

p.s the more powerful light you're using and especially LED lighting will penetrate deeper into the plant, when using these powerful lights you do not need to strip fan leaves off nearly as much. HPS or lower powered LED seem to benefit from the method.

I might have seen some pictures from this heavy defoliator on here.

I barely have leaves on my plantsbsobim going to let em grow a bit. Maybe around then21 daybof flower mark I will do a big clean up.

I am definitely starting to see the mixed opinions lol, I am going to get stoned one night and sit on the cooler and pluck some crap and see what happens

You should take care of those low flying insects bro.
