I look for the healthiest shoots and go with it i also try to bush my mother so they have a large canopy to get clones from the top i will be adding pics of my mothers to give a example. The way i have my moms i can pull ten to fifteen every week if i needed to. As for topping i wait till there 3rd or 4th week of veg before i top. I then use those tops as my next set of clones it works great and that way i am not stressen my mothers.

I prefer to take from the bottom of the plant as I do not keep mothers but just take clones of clone. Basically any branch that is big enough, I think in the 3 inch range or more, but here again that is just personal choice. I have cloned with really small branches but they also turn out to be the ones that I lose. I believe that the bigger cuttings with a stiffer stem work better and hold up better but that is just me. Good Luck with your efforts and enjoy learning a new process.
