Cloning from Fan Leaves

I will be getting a camera in the next week or 2 and have just placed 6 fan leaves in propagator this evening so will post pics soon as. As for you not having heard of it..can't answer that one. There are many varieties that have developed ways of regenerating without pollination and seeds, begonias and geraniums for instance. Its a plants defence mechanism for times when pollination and seed reproduction isn't available due to extenuating circumstances.

as a student in greenhouse crop management all this is true.

you can also start a plant from a single cell, that includes marijuana. its called tissue culture and it works damn well.

It would be nice to have a lab to do that in. But we're not interested in what's possible, only what's practical.

speak for yourself, if something gets proven in a lab, its only a matter of time before we (dopers) figure out how to do it with rubber bands and paper clips. I love the science of marijuana, even if its not things that are easily replicable at home.

why would it be worth all the bother?
say you're growing some dope. (hypothetically of course) and getting close to harvest time you see that one of your plants is showing a rare phenotype and is just covered in frost and gives off a smell like youve never smelled before. When you realize, SHIT!!!! didn't take a cutting from this one.
Sure would be nice to be able to save that bloodline. at least in my humble bummble

I tried this experiment. The fan leave did take root, even quicker than the real clones I was working on. I messed around and pulled it out of the soil after it had been in there for almost a week to see if the clones were taking to the soil. It ended up ripping the shit out of all the pretty white roots. Gave me a reason though to try it again. Something has to happen if it roots
right? Why root if it cant do anything!?

Plant tissue acts rather independantly.. The rooting area doesn't really know or care what is above it, its job is to grow roots.. Similar to you can unduce parts of a plant to act differently than the rest..

so what does the plant do with roots, is it going to keep the leaf alive and remain just a leaf. or will it mutate into some sort of weird piece of a weed plant thats good for nothing? thanks

Must agree with the facts from university profs. The cells just need to turn back into other types of cells just like they do in the stem of a clone, they turn into rooting cells again and grow.

It almost works like DNA... ONE cell has enough to recreate a whole animal in theory (animals are hard to clone/ recreate) BUT plants do it much easier.

So a Large fan leave Can become a full blown plant.

Question is why you'd want to do that when you can easily just take a clone which has a stem and a few nodes already.

I'm new to the site, but an old hand at growing -hydro and soil and I would just be interested to know if anybody other than me clones from fan leaves?
From what I can see everyone has theories on how old the plant should be, how many nodes up the plant etc etc. As a degree holder in botany I would just like to say forget all the hype use fan leaves and get great stocky clones with roots after 1 week!!!
When I get a camera sorted I will post pictures.
i would like to know how you did it. I only got a rooted fan leaf. Never any new nodes. Just a stupid rooted fan.:o
