Hey Chron.,

Do you ever have an issue with fugus gnats in your worm bin? We periodically do, and do nothing to control it. They seem to run there course in a week or so, then dissapear.

This makes me nervous to use the castings in the cultivation though, would hate to screw things up.
Hello Mr Green,

Fungus gnats are completely natural and normal in your vermicomposter.

Also known as 'fruit flies', Tephritidae flies actually lay their eggs in the rinds and skins of most fruits and vegetables, where the plant acts as an incubation chamber of sorts.

Once the ambient temperature reaches a certain point, these Tphritidae eggs hatch and release whatw e see as fruit flies. They typically have a 4-7 day lifespan, and will be effectively eliminated in dry, anaerobic or non-carbon based climates and medias.

If you TRULY want to eliminate fruit flies and their eggs, decrease humidity and pour in some beneficial nematodes with your next water.

The inclusion of high humidity and moisture presence in media also exacerbates fruit flies.

Take what you can from this post, I hope this helps you.

And by the way, your castings are great to use if they smell earthy and look similar to used coffee groudns---don't worry about gnats.

Yip...hahaha...they are stuffed in there. I guess thats the beauty of LED's and the wide angle that these floodlights project (120-140 degrees) They dont need alot of head room. (or none! :) )

I am 'anti-LED panel' or 'ALP' :-P

Thanks for your words. :)
led panels are cool. but not well enough designed too many blue amber and red leds not enough variations of just white. currently your floods hold an advantage over most panels unless they are DIY or too expensive.

Yeah they are pretty snazzy. I needed lots of points of light for my type of grow...so i went with the floodlights.

$315 for 7 x 50w (43 actual watts) delivered....Not too expensive at all. :)

And if one fails (it hasnt yet)....the drivers and LED chips are easy to replace.

I am convinced, after reading SDSs post yesterday (link on my thread), that especially when using floods, or home lighting bulbs (as I am) that >600 is essential for flowering, and those products intentionally avoid red.

You've got it covered with you DIY rails. Consider a blend of 610-630-640 + ~ 10% of total watts 660, possibly a little FR too
.

I am flipping to 12/12 today, so gonna add the ufo, unless I can find some screw bulb broad band 600s, which is not likely.

Good point. I have flowered with all white LED's before...so it is possible....

But....

Flowering took a long time...think it was 80 days in the end...although i was happy with the results (good density and structure)

So i decided on adding all 650-660nm (30w total on 2 x rails) Time will tell.... :)

Been 5 days since the clone transplants into soil. Have taken to it well and are starting to see solid leaf growth.

Pretty confident that they will be ready to go into flower in 9 days. Root ball should have developed sufficiently to support (some) bud growth. :)

Duuuude don't go away when you got clones in the house. Nooooooo. LOL.

Actually every time I go away when I have clones starting, they die :(. I'm refusing to leave for my sister's house this holiday till the clones I cut almost 2 weeks ago are rooted enough to survive. Seriously. There's no way I'm coming back to dead clones this year! And if those little ones aren't dead when you get back, either your room has very high RH or you sir are the Clone Masta!

i just put either wet newspaper, wet vermiculite/perlite or something of the sort under my clones in cups, making sure the humidity dome has water drops, this tells me it almost 100% humidity. i get 95% success and i don't mess with them at all. i just wait until i see them growing and throw them in veg.

also i add h2o2 to increase oxygen and stop fungas.

3 Days away. Plants are looking good of day 9 of veg. 5 days before flower

'Acid' Leaf and plant

'Pineapple express' leaf. Getting Chunkz! :)

_MG_3665.jpg
So just trying out flower enclosure. Tallest plant is currently 12cm. Total to the light from top of cup is 30cm. So that leaves 18cm of growth in flower.

Gonna be tight...but i am never one to turn down a challenge.. :)

Yeah, the K for 2 different Induction lamps is 5300K for start to finish, although IndaGro now offers a DR/FR pontoon

Growth is going well... 4cm in 2 days on the 'Acid'. It now stands at 16cm

A question on topping....Can i top now before it goes to flower in 3 days?

Saw some worms at the bottom of one of my cups...so i know the soil is good. :)

you could top but ideally you would want more than 3 days to recover, but i think you would be alright even if you did.

i have actually....got to find some willows now. :)

On the next cloning mish...i will do half and half. See where we at. :)
Ok....so i tried 8 with (3 x Acid, 3 x Pineapple express, and 2 x Purple Haze) and 7 without (2 x Acid, 2 x Pineapple express, and 3 x Purple Haze) CloneX

Results:

_MG_3674.jpg

RED CIRCLES: Dipped in Clonex (all rooted)
YELLOW CIRCLE: Without Clonex (1 rooted)
NO CIRCLE: Without Clonex (none rooted...but bumps)

Top row: Acid
Middle row: Purple Haze
Bottom row: Pineapple express

The pineapple express is probably the easiest to clone...so that have meant the untreated clone rooted to a satisfactory level. (yellow circle) Although they will probably all root...(all have bumps) i need the most established roots after 14 days...so speed of rooting is essential. So in conclusion...i will keep on using CloneX. :)

Keeping up with the newly formed tradition of 'Experimentation' I also topped 3/9 of my 12 day old clones....

clonex sucks. IBA is a subpar hormone, you can get roots just as fast without. it think you just happened to get the right dose this time :D youll see clonex is inconsistent. i prefer the hormone NAA, or a combo of the 2 but NAA works best, i use superthrive, hormex, KLN, or dipN'grow as my rooting hormones of choice.

Cloning Made Easy

Zero hormones needed- maybe a pinch of sea salt

The key is mega-bubbles

Smallish tote, big enough to handle the number of clones you want
hole cutter drill bit
1.5" pvc couplers
2" net pots
45 L/m air pump
Oxystones- or a high quality stone

^^ Small pumps work fine when the air space volume is minimal, but using this same size tote, using < 1/2 the L/M air pump, my success was ~ 50%. Since then, it's > 95%, much of that from external factors

Flora... I cant believe I have never thought of using couplers... +rep
I found I have to take the net pots out from the pvc couplers when I move to main veg tent. At that point I use > 4" net pots, that then go into 1 liter Air Pots (the large lip fits great). Experimenting now with my clones- some I left in the 1 liter the rest to 5 liter.

Haven't noticed any huge size difference so far. However, you will need a larger AP to support a big ass plant.

They are 3 weeks into budding now

i am gonna go with one tote one air sotne setup soon, just have to find the right container. i agree with you i do have some difficulties with ineffcient air distribution between stones. my pump is a big pump. 38L/pm
