CFL Cab - First Time Growing Anything ... Hope I Don't Mess Up

I am bout to head out and get some dif soil .. I'll prolly attempt a transpant of the seedling simply to see if I can salvage her, but I am also going to germ some more for a second round.

Gotta love bag seed for the trail and error stages for a green horn.

Just picked up some new soil as recommended by stonesour.

Jiffy Seed-Starter Mix (Organic) Pic below.

Anyone used this before? Because I could not find Miracle Gro Organic that didnt have an exuberant amount of additives.

well yeah, ocean forrest is great for established plants (2 or more weeks old) and provides good nutes for 4-5 weeks. But this not for seedlings which cazman is needing.

cazman i think the stuff you got will work great, just remember that the stuff is so light that its hard to water at first. when the seed is first germinated and your ready, mix a little soil and water first and then add it to your pot. trust me, its a bitch if you try to add your seed to dry seedling mix soil and then try to water it. you will know when you first try it.

SS, I did notice what you meant by the watering. I went ahead and transferred old green eyes that was dieing on me to the new soil in a vain attempt at salvaging. I figured why not at least try. And boy the watering was definitely interesting to say the least. I made the mistake of transferring into the soil before water/mixing. At this point I have little faith in her making it and really didnt expect a recovery upon transferring so I figure if she doesnt make it, no harm done and at least I tried. I have round two of seeds germinating as of this afternoon when you last responded. I figure in the next few days I will have some pics of the new run going. If old green eyes makes it, I will definitely keep the thread updated on this as well.

Sidenote: After reading what you had said about the nute burn I got to researching and noticed some words on purple stems being a tell tell sign. The seedling I scrapped earlier today actually had this issue and I knew it seemed a bit odd. So now I know what to look for. It was as purple as a Prince song. So you hit it Right on the money. I have much more faith in my next batch.

Well, for the record, I found me a great hydroponic shop in town. Alternative Garden Supply DBA Brew & Grow (www.altgarden.com) for anyone interested in the Chicago area. Simply an amazing place and just moved to a larger facility, partial warehouse.

Anyway, I have relocated my box to a different and more practical location in the house. I purchased a amazing temp/hygrometer. It shows highs and lows through a days run. So far I'm running 64-79 degree F / 24-44% Humidity ... which I am fairly pleased with. Especially after running into upwards of 90 in the closet. So yay for that. Sidenote, this is before I have had the chance to install my fan systems into the box for some added fresh air circulation (which by the way Micro Center is selling comp fans (120mm) for $3 a piece. Big grab bin.) --- and the ability to close the front cab door..

Anyway, I figured while I am in limbo - between failing miserably (due to damn MG soil) and the germination of my new babies - I though it best to give some test runs and tweak my setup. And saw it worth while to update you kind and highly knowledgeable cats all on the progress.

So far so good. We'll see how round two goes. More updates soon.

Well round two is underway... Have three seeds on their third day of germination, no signs of popping yet, but theres still plenty of time.

So fingers crossed this time goes better this time around.

One quick question, I just received my dremel (YAY! Tooltime)... and in this package I had my "friend" send up seeds. With these seeds they also had sent three which were already germinated in a soil patch wrapped in cellophane. Only took a couple days to get here. Each were at the point you see in the pics below. couple inches long.

What is the likely hood of these surviving the travel and new planting?

Sidenote: The reason they were sent in this manner was due to an overabundance of germinated seeds for this person. They over estimated the amount in the napkin to actually germinated (100% success of all seeds stashed in a napkin, quite impressive) So they sent me some of the overflow. I truly don't wont be holding my breath. Its quite the stress on them. But I figured hey, why waste em and hell it this works, its a little tidbit of "it works" that I can add to the forums.

I germinated some seeds a little too long and got one that looked just like yours and its growing fine now. My sprout had yellow leaves too but it quickly changed colors and begin to grow under CFL's. best of luck!

Excellent, congrates on your recovery by the way. That definitely makes me a slightly more hopeful on them making it. What is making doubt the most though is they were under 72 hour darkness. Mind you they were in a soil pod and well moisturized, but that was a intense amount of time not to have any photosynthesis going on.

They are stout lil buggers though. One was about 3 inches long. Two were over two inches but the root tail had bent back up toward the bloom. I planted them buckle down and didnt try to unbend them to much in the hopes the roots right themselves.

Should I go back in and attempt to straighten it out, or should I leave em be and hope for the best?

chances will be high that they will be fine, but add a dome over those babies to keep em moist....

Sounds very hopeful then. Unfortunately I have no "domes" for the pods, but I have improvised a plastic over them with a stack keeping it above the rim of the pods.

Will this be adequate to keep in moisture without compromising to much light displacement?

Well two of them have definitely perked back up and started to unravel. The third is staying shy and near the soil with its canopy closed. But I still have faith.

So for everyone out there. Shipping germinated seeds that are on the verge if not ready to be called seedlings CAN be done. If done properly.

Ready them in a pod of soil that is well moistened, wrapped in cellophane and I stress this one... properly and "discreetly" packaged. Then ship away, you should have a good chance of most if not all surviving. Due try to make sure the travel time is no longer the 2 - 2.5 days.

That should be alright, just watch the plastic closely, it might melt and shrink if it gets too hot. Usually the bottom of a plastic soda bottle works well.

Well two of the lil greens have popped up.. Ones got me a lil worried, but I think its due to the travel or maybe the previous soil it was in while in transit. It has a yellowing leaf to it and a fairly purple stem. The other has a relatively purple stem for the time being..

Need I be concerned or will they level out pretty well while they get used to their new pot and soil?

Yeah they look solid, the yellow leaf is just from the seed shell or genetics but should be fine. looking good so far!!!

Excellent... Lost one of them in the transit. No worries though. I had some seeds germinating already and have replaced the lost plant as of this evening. Still two seeds left awaiting them to pop.

I'll pop some new pics up in the next couple of days.

I have to say the new thermometer I just got (digital) is amazing. It keeps track of the high and lows of temp and humidity since last reset. Intensely handy.

So far since I relocated the cab to the new room. This has been my readings after 4 days (Planted shipped seedlings, March 17th).

Temperature
Current: 75° F
High: 79° F
Low: 64° F

Humidity
Current: 25%
High: 43%
Low: 16%

Quite impressed, and haven't even installed my comp fans yet.
