Carbon Filter outside of tent??

First off I want to say thank you to everyone on here that has helped so far with this particular grow Ive started,

Now onto the business, I always see everyone putting the carbon filter inside the tent but little mention of it being put outside, has anyone tried it? Is there any reason for it not to work?

I was thinking about putting ventilation to it after the fan and having that lead to the carbon filter which would sit either firmly on the floor or on a rack outside the tent. Is there anything wrong with this idea?

The obvious reason would be to secure some more room in the tent

If it is outside the tent it is not filtering.
Every carbon filter I have ever used is designed to be mounted inside the grow space, at the end of the line. Meaning, you have the fan pulling air out of the tent with the filter inside the tent on the other end. Make sense?

You can blow air through Carbon Filters and they do work as well. I was going to use this technique as my first tent was too small but bought a bigger one.

Yeah, that information is not correct. Every manufactuer of carbon filters will tell you can run the carbon filter on either end of the ducting. It does exactly the same thing and results are the same. Here's mine with zero order in my house and attic.

Never heard of one being ran inside of your grow before I don't get how air would run through it to take out any impurities and odors. Doesn't make sense really.

Think about your car. The air filter is placed before going into the engine. I just use a simple a/c filter for this purpose. The muffler exiting the vehicle engine to filter for noise. The carbon filter is the exiting filter for the grow and eliminates odor.

As long as your ducting is connected well, you can use the carbon filter in the front or like me, us it at the back. For small grow areas and tents, the back provide more space because the carbon filter can be located outside the room. Important note, carbon filters reduce cfms, so make sure you have enough in-line fan to drive the system.

Yes you can run it that way just fine, as long as the air is filtered before exhausting the system it will be fine.

Thanks brother. It took about 6 months of planning, drawing out air flow patterns, cfm calculations, shopping the internet for about three months, and about a week to build her. Very rewarding to see my babies in there with about 4-5 weeks left to harvest.

I have one inside, that filters the air before it goes across my hood. Took me a while to discover that the hood is not 100% air tight and sealed - so I added a longer length of ducting for the extraction and added another carbon filter which is positioned all the way across the room by a window. Not only does this totally remove ALL smell, it also helps keep the air in my room (and therefore my tent) fresh.

I guess you can mount the filter outside the grow tent, It just seems more effective to me to mount it inside the tent.
Does not really take up space because, if mounted correctly is it well above the canopy, near the ceiling of your tent or room.
I guess the other reason I put the filter inside my tent, is because almost every picture of every pro looking grow room I have ever seen online, or in a magazine, always had their filters mounted inside the room, just above or about at the height of the hoods.
I suppose they do work either way, I just think they are more effective inside the grow space.
And really as long as you have a good fan that is creating negative pressure in your space, I suppose that the difference in filtration would probably be negligible.

Thanks for your post. Couldn't see the images though I think I'm attempting the same..How does this sound. 700 cfm rated hyperfan in a 315 cf room hanging and ducting connected running out of the tent into the attic through hole in the ceiling, connected to a one way phresh carbon filter.? The original goal was the fan-->inline filter-->ducting--> attic, though I bought a one way phresh filter by mistake and now it's plan b to save a hundred or so dollars and time.

FWIW I've always ran a carbon filter outside of my tent with no problems.

In this case would you want to have another small prefilter before the fan pushing air out through the carbon filter? To avoid large particles being pushed through and clogging your cf

You can work it back to front but the surface area and efficiency suffers apparently, I'm not saying not to but if you want it the right way you need a barell/tub/vessel that you can enlcose it in idealy with the top of the filter poking through the lid so it's air tight, now you connect your fan to filter and it creates a vacuum in the barrel/tub and it can only draw from the ducting you add coming from your tent.
So you need a tub/barrel 2x6" holes 1 from the tent 1 for extracting via the filter.

I've ran it both ways and when the filter was outside my tent I could still smell it but when it was inside I dont smell a thing
