Cann's First Grow - Aero + Soil with Flouros

Alright so I'm about four weeks into my grow right now and it has been a journey. Started the seeds at my friends house in his attic until his mom found it...so it got moved to my place and it is now in the corner of my room. Anyway, at the beginning me and my friend germinated hella bagseed and planted them in soil, four in each with about 4x4 inch pots (which was a terrible decision) and we had them under one 48'' flouro with ecolux plant & aquarium and daylight bulbs. This was then moved to my house, placed in the corner, and covered with an emergency blanket (which was sort of tented with a metal wire I strung up to fit over the lights). The lights were hung from the ceiling (about 4 feet cus its like slanted if that makes sense) and the plants grew okay.
At two weeks we transplanted the sixteen that were sprouted and healthy into about 8 inch pots and the roots were pretty tangled for the ones that were four to a pot, so some of the roots got messed up, but overall the transplant was successful. After a couple days back and watered (also fed a little with terracycle) they all were healthy except for one that was kinda drooping and yellowing (its better now but still a little droopy).
I got another light + the same bulbs so it was double the light (but still not enough). That was all up until about a couple days ago, I think a couple plants still in the soil (we left the eight biggest in soil) are in veg and the rest are really close.

So the other day I saw this thing on hydro and aero stuff and it was like a book on how to grow hydro/aero and like homemade stuff you can make. So I got that and set up a rubbermaid tote-ish thing with pvc on the inside and little micro sprayer type things that spray 16 3' net cups filled with clay pebble things. The one problem is, the tote is clear which might affect root growth. Does anyone know if light affects the growth of the roots? Help would be great. Anyway, so I set that shit up and I realize I'm only gonna have enough room to grow about six plants (maybe if I can keep em small) so I took some of the sixteen and Tried a transplant from soil to aero...which was pretty hard, but I think it worked. What I did was take a few of the the plants outside (the smaller ones that I could risk killing and the droopy/yellowing ones) and dug around the roots until I could pull it out, and then got the hose sprayer on mist setting and misted away all the dirt till only the roots were left, and i put them in the system inbetween all the clay pebbles. It has been around ten hours from the transplant, and all of them seem to be doing well. Oh, and I decided to experiment a little with some cloning solution I got. I took one of the plants and just cut it at the base, dipped it in the cloning stuff, and put it in a little soil thing (the circular ones that you get wet and they expand into little balls) and it wilted immediately, and looked like it was going to die. Then, after I put it in the aero system, it hasnt died yet, and I think it has actually perked up a tiny bit. I wasnt really expecting it to work anyway, but we shall see what happens. I also started some more seeds I got in some of the little soil things and put them in the Aero system too.

Today was also a big lighting day. I bought two more fixtures + bulbs and got that rigged up, so now there are two over the aero res (one for each line of eight cups) and then one directly over the soil plants, and one on the side facing towards them. This is all covered by double layered emergency blankets, and there is a fan blowing air in. I think I'll be able to get pics soon but I'm not sure. Any help or comments would be great, and thanks for reading that massive block of text lol.

A couple questions...

Do you think this is enough light, or should I get some CFL's (I cant get a MH or HPS) to add more light?

As far as nutes go, What should I be adding? (for both aero and soil)
In the res I have a couple tablespoons of molasses, some ecogrow which is 20-6-12 and some Neptunes Harvest Fish and Seaweed stuff that is 2-3-1. Also I have like half a bottle of terracycle, which I dont think you can burn with. Pretty much the same for the soil ones, but I also have some blood meal that is 13-0-0...

What is the smallest size you can take clones at? I want to clone one of the bigger ones soon and put it in the Aero System.

That is all.

Damn that was a long post, took me two bowls to write it :joint:

Peace

Okay so today I got a 55 watt cfl and put that in there too, and I found alot of other cfl's in my basement, and I think I am going to try and include those too. Plants are growing great, and the ones in the aero system have just started to come out of root shock. The one clone ish one (that i chopped at the base) has perked up and I think its gonna be okay.

Anyone with advice...?

haha. pics will come as soon as i can locate my sisters camera/cord which should be soon.

but anyway,
got a 23 watt cfl today that i found around my house and i found another one too plus a bunch of tiny ones but i only have one fixture, so i only put one more in. So i need to go get fixtures to have even more light, but i think im doin pretty well for now.

The biggest plant is taking off and all the rest are following. The ones in aero are mainly staying the same (root shock?) except for one or two which are showing roots out the bottom. My one problem is a clear reservoir and i think i am going to spray paint it black so that no light gets in.

Anyone with advice? (besides post pics i know)

So today was a big day again, one of the light fixtures broke (so I'm down to three) and i had to clean out the reservoir because it was clear and light was getting in and it smelt like shit (i think it was algae?) and there was all this weird looking shit in it. So i cleaned it out, and then i spray painted it black and then painted a layer of brown latex paint over that to make it light proof. So i think i'm good but we will see...The res has only water in it (no nutes) for now just to see if i can get all the plants in it to perk up. I transplanted the plants that were in the worst condition into aero cus i didnt wanna risk messing up on the bigger ones, so the difference between aero/soil is huge right now.

Anyway...on to pics :weed:

Okay sorry about the lack of posts...I was on a backpacking trip around Mt. Rainier (washington) but now i'm back. My friend watered them once while I was gone and they seem to be doing great except for the transplanted ones in aero...I think the clear reservoir messed up the plants that were growing, so the majority of those died, but the seedlings I planted a couple days ago are growing well and very fast.
The ones in soil are doing great, except for one that is really crazy looking (pics soon). I'm debating when i should flower, because i only have about three or four feet of space to grow in. Thinkin about a week until i start flowering? I dont need THAT much bud, and i'm going to clone these ones as soon as i can before i flower, so i can eventually get to perpetual... I'm definitely going to have to do a SOG type grow with this many plants, but we will see how big they get...
I also need to build a light proof box for flowering, and i'm considering building a box out of styrofoam that will fit up against my wall and i'll be able to hang lights from the ceiling into the box (if that makes any sense). The box would have an intake for fresh air and a fan blowing air out on the other side. Any ideas for cheap, easy, light proof boxes would be great. I'll hopefully have pics tomorrow, but might not. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Should I get more lights???
Can I take clones during flowering?

Comments...?

Why cant I take clones during flowering? Isnt it essentially like re vegging a harvested plant (the light cycle change would be the same)?

Anyway the plants are looking good, i still need to get my sisters camera to take pictures, but there is a seedling in aero that is the biggest, healthiest seedling i have ever seen. its leaves are like twice the size of the first leaves on my biggest plant, so i cant even imagine what its going to look like. i think i'm going to start flowering in a week, so i need to build a box with ventilation and odor control. any suggestions for DIY grow boxes big enough to grow about 4 soil plants (in 4-5 gallon pots) and a rubbermaid container with aero?

Help would be greatly appreciated...anyone???

if you take clones while she is flowering, you could cause her to be hermie, or odd growth, she could shut down and die if you take too many. (I cant take any more clones off my plants :(. You can put it back into veg for a few weeks, and then clone though, and then start flower over again, as long as you are less than three weeks into flower! Clones that come off of flowering plants don't usually make it, don't root, but on rare occasions and under the best conditions... I would rather not, it is possible, though highly recommended against... good luck

Watered today. Ill try and get pics up later tonight or tomorrow morning. How big to plants have to be for you to take clones off of them? Mine are about 4-5 inches tall and about 8-9 inches wide (tips of fan leaves). I want to start flowering soon, but i need to take clones before i do that so i can continue these strains. Advice...?

Alright i got the camera so here are some pics. This is about a month and a half old i believe

There are a few survivors of the transplant in the aero, but theyre not lookin too good. The seedling is fucking massive. Biggest seedling ive ever seen, and its under a week old...

* There is a weird one in the aero that seems to be growing out and down instead of through the little soil thing its in. I think this is because the roots couldnt break through the bottom of the bag its in, so they are getting to water the other way. I dont know how easy it is to see because of the angle but it has grown out and down and is now almost touching the pebbles at the bottom of the cup...i'm gonna let it live just to see what happens, but i'm not expecting it to do that well...

Anyway, on to pics

P8150688.jpg biggest one P8150690.jpg side view P8150691.jpg fat indica (i think) P8150696.jpg weird twisty one...herm? (blurry) P8150697.jpg fat seedling P8150698.jpg weird one* P8150701.jpg other healthy seedlings

Let me know what you think...

K so no one seems to be reading this but whatever...i'll post it anyway. Plants are looking great. The ones in aero had a little algae problem so i covered up the cups with white cardboard ish stuff and it seems to be working. Prolly gonna put some Hydrogen Peroxide (h2o2) in there soon because I have heard it gets rid of algae, and its good for the roots. I also have a little pest problem...on the plant under cfl's there are a shitload of tiny thin black insect things (i could fit like a hundred on my pinky finger nail) and they are just jumping around all over the soil/lights, etc. There is a little tupperware collecting drips coming out of the aero because its not sealed perfectly, and there are some of them in there just like twitching around in the water...
Are these born in the water, or did something lay its eggs everywhere? I'm really confused...
But anyway, it doesnt seem to be anywhere else except on that one plant, and it doesnt seem to be harming it, so i'm very interested to see whats going on. I hope this isnt bad.....

Pics as soon as somebody other than myself posts with advice or writes somethingggg haha

Peace

K so i think i found out what the bugs are. I need to fix the leak in my aero res, because apparently theyre attracted to moisture and need it to live and having a constantly wet towel is a great place for that...

Springtails

Apparently they dont do harm but still...freakin me out.

Anyone heard of these/had em before?

Springtail population is diminishing...I think i fixed the leak. Hopefully. Anyway, there were a couple fruit flies in there today, but they dont seem to be doing anything bad. I'm going out of town for a couple days, but when I get back I think I'm gonna try and get ladybugs to put in there to prevent any pests.
If anyone is reading this, post and let me know what you think...please

Those little things sound to me like spider mites........not good, they are sucking your plants for their own good being, leaving you with low thc levels and unhealthy plants!!!! damn spider mites love to get high

ladybugs will attempt to eat the mites, but spider mites seem to never go away unless you get rid of the plants that have them and start your grow room new after cleaning and everything. they can come from spores in the air if you frequent outside adn from dirts you get from the outside. i likes me some home made hydro to avoid transferring diseases and pest eggs everywhere.

I'd be careful, an idiot friend of mine released spiders and ladybugs........not a good combo......spiders eat his ladybugs

nice plants though, I'll be following your grow.
i got mine starting soon, hopefully i can help yours, maybe not though i am blazed outa me skull
