Can you put the carbon filter out of the tent?

My old setup was a dr60 tent (2x2x5, tiny) with a 400w HPS, diy cool tube and 6” exhaust fan. There was no room inside the tent for anything except plants, ducting and light fixture. The ballast, fan and filter all needed to be outside the tent. Since my exhaust fan was total overkill, it allowed me to push air through the filter instead of pulling. It worked great, but much less efficient than pulling though the filter. It didn’t blow any carbon or dust at all, I was using a 4” can filter with a reducer.

I run a Vivosun filter outside of the tent only because Vivosun's filters are rated to allow for air to be pushed through them. Not all carbon filters are rated as such so it might be a good idea to ask the manufacturer before you purchase.

If you really want to go the extra mile, build the box tall enough to accommodate the fan with a hose or pipe coming off the fan and through your exhaust hole, then insulate the fan. With the lid on its hardly noticeable. I ran the power cord through the lid by drilling a hole on the edge of the exhaust port hole.

Helpful tip.

If you take plastic sandwich wrap and use it to cover half the carbon filter. The half where the duct attaches.

It causes the air to move through the carbon towards the uncovered end. Instead of blowing out through the first 4" of filter. That way, It uses the entire filter. Much more efficient. Less smell and a better filter life.

If you know the brand of you filter, check with it to see. Some filters can be used as a blow through or suction. Most are just suction type. So not all are able to be used out side the tent.

update.

I shorten the pipes.
This is the best setup.
I still have positive pressure but almost zero smell.
I tried inside tent setup and it gave exactly the same results.

Maybe I need a better flow filter.

I'm using a phat filter.
It is outside my grow room.
I push air through it.
It does leave some carbon on the floor near the filter.
The extraction fan is wall mounted on an exterior wall.
I'm on my third grow with this set up and no problems yet.

BTW the white shroud is used when pulling/sucking air through the filter.
If you are pushing air through the filter (only if the filter is outside the grow room/tent) you do not need the the white shroud.

If you use the white shroud on the outside of that filter, it will keep that carbon off the floor.
The white shroud is an intake filter to prevent the fan from sucking fine foreign material into your filter if you’ve positioned your filter inside the tent.

The shroud will not contain the near microscopic carbon granules that will blow out of a filter positioned outside your grow room.
