i know HID lights work well for growing and having a large outcome of buds but i am on a budget so is it possible to use a combination of cfl lights to match up to the results of a HID light?

if u can afford it:

CFL's for vegging. HPS for flowering.

and yes, u can produce nice buds from doing it all cfl. check out the CFL section an grow journals, sure ull see some nice grows there.

no cfl......listen to gg....you can get hid for cheaper than you think.....by the time you buy the cfls and everything to connect and hang them you have spent more than you would have for a small hid lighting set up.....cfls are a waste of money

nickfury510, i am using two small, separated areas. both are 1.5X1.5ft with a height of 3ft. one is for veg. and the other for flowering... would you still recommend an HID light for each grow area? or cfl's in the veg area and HID in the flower area?

cfl's are for people who can't handel heat and space issues. Get a hid if you have a room with vents and fans. Otherwise get each of your plants at least 100W of light and they'll be ballin. I got 4 100W for 2 plants and they are big pimpin

As many GIANT ASS CFL's as you can fit into 1.5 feet squared.

Cheaply 42 watt walmart CFL's X 20

or 2 or 3 200 watt Envirolite HW-CFL's

Small CFL's fire and run at 80 degrees F, Ambient room temp wont explode with heat with small CFL's.

The envirolites run at 90 degrees F.

You could pack as many CFL's in there without the heat getting to hot.

That space size with a HPS light though it would fry, but not CFL's

And even if 20 CFL's did heat the mini room to 85 degrees simple vents with Computer fans could keep it all in check.

I only say 20 CFL because with those dinky lights the more the better if you HAVE to go that route.

A 150 watt HPS, with good ventilation would be better.

thanks so much friends for the helpful hints. your advice is appreciated.

i will go with multiple cfl's since money and space are an issue.

A Cfl cost like $5, the fixture for it to screw into $5, and a cord for it to plug off of a power strip $5.

Thats $15 a CFL, X 5 CFL = $75.

For $75 you can get a 150 watt HPS light from htgsupply.com

Just think about your total cost versus what you are getting.

HPS light will far surpass cfl light, and your buds will thank you for it.

even if you have to shell out a few more bucks for some ventilation...

ya know...

Actually the ballast run at 116F, but the bulb surface temp is 175F for a 26W/100W CFL. Measured with a contact thermocouple into a Fluke 189 DMM.

(70W HPS bulb surface temp was 260F )

(just checked again yup)

thanks for the info friends!

Ganjagoddess...will a 150watt HPS be too much heat in an area of 1.5x1.5ft with a height of 3ft even if i install computer fans for intake and exhaust??

Sadly yes it will be alot of heat. Its just that its a really tiny area in there and the 150 is just too big.

I bet though you could run a 70 watt HPS light in there. You can get them for $40 at homedepot!! Will need ventilation though.

If this were true that a CFL's surface temp was 175 degrees F, you would burn yourself touching it, and it would melt the plastic enclosure around the ballast.

I can stick my tounge to a flouro.

So how is it that your TC is reading 175....

I am intigued though that you have one.... Tell me more...
