Not really. I use ro water for soil. It never gives me a problem. I use a pretty good blended dry feed though. My tap has high calcium. It would give me more problems, than using ro.

Personally I don't think ro is necessary for either. A tall boy is all I've ever used for soil and hydro. Yes you get more control over what exact nutrients are in the water but in both types of hydro I've done ro was never necessary and the plant took what nutrients they needed.

A lot of people get away without RO for hydro, so sure, it may not be "necessary". It likely highly depends on the quality of your pre-filtered water to begin with. If you have some nice 100ppm tap water, you might be just fine with a tall-boy. But if you have 300+ ppm, I think you're gonna have issues without strong filtration. Personally I don't like to always have to constantly adjust ph, I like to set it and forget it. It seems that inevitably with tap water, the ph is always rising due to carbonates in the water. Everyone's tap/well is different. RO is a blank slate which you can count on for consistency. I like consistency.

My water is 300ppm after filtering through the tall boy I add 1/3tbs ph down once a day

I'm not saying people shouldn't use ro for hydro and I'm sure it would help if dialing everything in for perfection but imo it's not necessary for either soil or hydro.
