Yes, they make heavier duty extension cords. For instance,

here is a 10/4 extension cord intended for gennies

The pic in the OP shows Louis' to be 12AWGx3C.
Yes i know they make 16,14,12,10ga cords.can you show us the 20ga cord kitty cat was talking about? It should look something like speaker wire all flimsy as shit haha.

The timers a titan grow timer. And I have each available circuit dedicated to one thing nothing's being over juiced. This setup worked fine for months this just started happening leads me to assume something's starting to fail. To trouble shoot id have to go buy the 100 dollar extension cord anyways so I may as well Brain storm first
Go buy a 12 gauge cord, if you are using a run of the mill cord, it is probably 14 gauge at most.
That's why your cord is turning colors.

Yeah looks like the wire for a little lamp or appliance...

I'd much rather make my own. I found a whole roll on that yellow 12awg stuff today and I'm pretty happy bout that, lol

you are using a cheap, light gauge (18-20g) cord, braided wire. use a 10-14g extension and you wont trip anything. use the proper materials and you wont have a problem. it is dangerous to push more current than gauge of wire is rated for.

lol
indeed, however, larger gauge will also do as a shady engineering fix.

true story. hope he's glad we don't want him to burn... lol

and other safe options...

lmao, forgot about that...

fantastic! if you want to share details and pics, i will inspect for potential issues...

o_O

this is a viable option as long as WIRE IS RATED FOR CURRENT APPLIED...

new ends won't make 20g wire run 20 amps at 120vac or 240vac... it cannot handle the load. like trying to run the hudson through a garden hose...
Johnny electrical mentions 20ga more than once,i just wanted to see wtf he was talking about lol

There is a reason why high wattage users often carry a warning to not use an extension cord. My compressor for eg will flip breakers with a long cord but wont otherwise.
My compressor does also. I bought a heavy duty cord and it works now.

Its one of those construction cords with multiple outlets.

by 'worked fine for months' you mean the insulation on the wiring is literally COOKING...

Thats not fine bro... far from it.

Its lucky.

You are lucky.

You are not dead, or severely burned from the fire hazard you created.

Eventually, the plastic is gonna melt in the wrong spot, and create FIRE.

Stop playing around, spend the $8 and do the job right, or GTFO of the growing hobby... If you can't spend money for things like fire safety, you should not be growing potatoes, let alone weed.

Do not fuck around with electricity, or fire safety.

Dude be safe, 85% of house fires are caused by grow rooms! I run an adapter to my dryer circuit, it's got its own breaker and a lot more Amps. Most can run 6 1000 watt lamps with ease. I currently have 2 1000 watters, AC, humidifier, dehumidifier, fans and are exchange system. I sleep great at night. Running a bunch of watts to ordinary wall sockets is asking for trouble! Or even better have a whole new circuit ran.

Sometimes people leave the lead coiled which turns it into an inductor. What happens when you apply a potential over an inductor or coil and then take it away?
